(I haven't been on much because I returned to college to finish a BA in English with a minor in writing. I have about a year or less left)

I'm so glad to hear she's back in IN. I did think of her last night when I posted here. I was wondering if she was still here and if so if she was okay or in an evac zone.

You know that the offer I made last time for her to come to my home up on the ridge would have been extended if she were here this time. As long as she was here she could have come.

I did know that, Kat, thanks. Actually, she moved to an apartment in the evacuation zone last year, but this year she transferred to Purdue. I think HPU was great socially (in a good way), but just not challenging enough academically.

Now I only have to worry about blizzards and tornados...

BBM: Now that we've all calmed down, can someone explain to me why a tsunami was expected to hit the coast of New Hampshire even before it reached South-Central California or various coastal cities of Alaska?

I think that may have been a glitch, there is a Fort Point, Alaska

I read that too, Nova...and have NO clue how. Unless it went UP and over the north pole and then came down...but it seems to me to be an error.

OTOH, I'm no geologist or seismologist, so maybe there's a reverb effect that is not common knowledge.

And, of course, it could be a mistake.

Concerns over B.C.’s emergency response arise on Haida Gwaii

snipped..."The first call I got from the provincial emergency program was an hour at least after the earthquake. We’d already initiated the evacuation,” said Chris Ashurst, emergency coordinator in Tow Hill Road, a community of about 200 people 10 kilometres east of Masset on Haida Gwaii.

“Normally I would wait for that call before doing that .... By the time we got that call the wave had already passed, quite a bit earlier,” he said.

Instead, Ashurst looked to Google Alerts, which picked up on a web notice from the U.S. Geological Survey immediately after the quake jolted his home along with B.C.’s north-central coast just after 8 p.m. He also called the mayor of Masset, who told him he was initiating an evacuation order despite not having heard from Emergency Management, the provincial agency responsible for advisories of active emergencies.

Shallow 6.3-magnitude earthquake strikes off B.C. coast

snipped...The quake, at a depth of about 10 kilometres, was centred about 245 km southwest of Prince Rupert, British Columbia, and struck at about 10.29 p.m. on Monday, the USGS said.

The quake was not expected to generate a tsunami, the USGS’s Alaska Tsunami Warning Center said in a statement.

Tarabull, thanks for the updates and the links to the vids. It's fascinating that the springs were left dry...the earth is such an incredible thing, and to have it shift enough to cover a hot water vent is fascinating...and yes, a little bit scary.

As a veteran of many large eqs, I have to say, the vids I've been watching don't show the amount of panic I feel when it's a big one. God bless all those folks who experienced this monster quake, and were able to handle their emotions. I would have run in circles screaming.

Just wow.

Magnitude 6.3 quake occurs off Canada's Pacific coast; no damage reported

There was a 7.4 in Guatemala reported earlier today with at least 15 dead, though that death toll was hours ago.

While I am not "really" their uncle, I do enjoy being a sort of tío to my best friend's kids, who are half-Guatemalan.

snipped...Scientists on Haida Gwaii received some tepid good news this week when a small flow of hot water was discovered at the famed hot springs that went dry after last October's large earthquake.
