CNN cuts end Mitchell's show on HLN

NEW YORK (AP) — Jane Velez-Mitchell and her staff have been laid off due to budget cuts at CNN, ending her nightly program on the HLN network.

Her program, which aired for six years at 7 p.m. Eastern on the CNN sister network, ended Monday. Mitchell was told of the layoff on Tuesday, said executives at CNN who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss personnel matters. Twelve people, including Mitchell, were let go with this cut.

The show will be replaced temporarily by reruns of "Forensic Files."

Meanwhile, CNN has disbanded its Los Angeles-based unit that covers entertainment and will be ending three specialty shows because of the layoffs...

Celebrated crime-fiction writer John Grisham has attacked America's judicial system for wrongly locking up men he believes 'accidentally' watched child .
The best-selling author and lawyer - who penned novels like The Rainmaker, The Firm and The Pelican Brief - has given an astonishing interview to The Telegraph defending some child sex offenders, saying they have become victims of a legal system that has 'gone crazy'.
The 59-year-old then called for lighter sentences for those caught downloading images and videos of children being sexually abused.
'We have prisons now filled with guys my age. Sixty-year-old white men in prison who've never harmed anybody, would never touch a child,' Grisham told The Telegraph.

Jury returns guilty verdicts on child sex abuse charges connected to Brittney Wood family investigations

BAY MINETTE, Alabama -- A jury has returned guilty verdicts on two counts today in the case against William "Billy" Brownlee, 50, of Eight Mile. Brownlee, who was indicted in 2012, had been charged with second-degree sodomy and second-degree sexual abuse in connection with investigations linked to the family of missing woman Brittney Wood. He was convicted of sexually abusing a girl when she was 12 or 13 years old. The trial began today with the defense and prosecution giving their closing arguments to the jury.

Medical examiner: Rivers died of low blood oxygen

NEW YORK (AP) — Joan Rivers died from low blood oxygen during a routine medical procedure to check out voice changes and reflux, the medical examiner's office ruled Thursday.

The comedian, who was 81, died Sept. 4 after she'd been hospitalized for about a week when she went into cardiac arrest during the procedure at a doctor's office.

Rivers died from "anoxic encephalopathy due to hypoxic arrest" — brain damage due to lack of oxygen — during a procedure to scope her upper gastrointestinal tract and vocal folds, a spokeswoman for the city's medical examiner said...

A man being questioned about the deaths of seven women found in Gary and Hammond over the weekend is a convicted sex offender who moved to the area from Texas about 10 years ago, police said Monday.

Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr., in a posting on Facebook, said the suspect is an "admitted serial killer" who may be linked to murders as far back as 1994.

Those named are:
Missing from Sayre, and found in blue 1969 Chevrolet Camaro with a white top,
Jimmy Allen Williams, 16, , who had bought the used Camaro six days before he and his friends went missing.
Leah Gail Johnson, 18, and
Thomas Michael Rios, 18, who went missing in 1970.
Williams and his friends had planned to attend a football game the night they went missing. Two rifles were found, rusted and corroded, in the Camaro.

The other remains matched the genders and ages of three passengers in a green Chevrolet who went missing in 1969.

Nora Marie Duncan, 58.
They were last seen when their car was "given a push" to help get it started, according to a July 1969 newspaper article published in Oklahoma.
