Judge calls Oakland Co. cancer doctor a flight risk

Detroit — Indicted cancer doctor Farid Fata will remain behind bars until his February trial after a federal judge refused Wednesday to lower his $9 million bond.

The Oakland Township doctor, who has been jailed since early August on multiple counts of Medicare fraud, appeared for a bond hearing Wednesday in U.S. District Court, where Judge Paul Borman denied Fata’s attorneys’ request to have his bond lowered to $500,000 and be released.

Borman said Fata had the “motive and the means to flee” to his native Lebanon. Outside the courtroom, patients who has earlier gathered for a protest outside the federal courthouse hugged each other and cheered the judge’s decision...

Bobby Ferguson was sentenced Friday to 21 years in prison on convictions he extorted millions during his time as a contractor in Detroit and orchestrated it all with Kwame Kilpatrick.

He walked into the courtroom with a smile on his face, he smiled at his wife as the handcuffs were removed from his wrists; his attorneys said Ferguson is a different man now.

Kilpatrick and Ferguson were described as a team who committed bribery, extortion and other crimes...

I am not quite sure if this is the right thread to post this but there is definitely something happening in the Madelaine McCann case - in the last ten mins, I just heard there has been a 'tremendous response' to the police appeal broadcast on English TV tonight. It will air In Germany Wednesday.

I have only heard on the radio what the program said:

There are STRONG indications - and police believe - 'it was a planned abduction'.

The case has been turned on its head; one key 'suspicious' person has turned out to be a man collecting his daughter from a creche - but this was not the man seen at 10pm carrying the little girl.

Police say it is vitally important to find another two men seen 'lurking' outside the apartment - probably German.

Police are appealing for more information and the co-operation of the community. They say it is vital.

Another possible theory floated is a burglary. There had been several break-ins at the time.

Bernard Kilpatrick was sentenced Thursday to 15 months in prison on a tax crime conviction.

Kilpatrick, who is Kwame Kilpatrick's dad, was found guilty of one count of subscribing a false tax return by the same jury that convicted his son and contractor Bobby Ferguson of more serious crimes.

Kwame Kilpatrick was sentenced to 28 years in prison and Ferguson to 21 years last week.

U.S. District Judge Nancy Edmunds ordered Bernard Kilpatrick to pay $62,212 in restitution.

His sentence will begin after the first of the year...
