the wood used on the boardwalk and the "shacks" in the older parts of the boardwalk were usually covered with tar also to help weather proof. that helped the fire BIG time.

This fire happened at the other end of the boardwalk, the south end. The roller coaster that went into the ocean was at the Casino Pier at the north end.

Oops, you're right....my bad! Thanks for the correction. It's all just so sad .
So many memories there.

New Jersey Boardwalk Fire Eyed 'Suspicious' By Officials

http://abcnews.go.com/US/jersey-boa...s/story?id=20244922&google_editors_picks=true

Investigators are suspicious of the fire's origin for the following reasons: it was a midday fire with no bad weather to speak of or obvious cause, there were no injuries, the structure survived the summer season only to burn now and a huge number of firefighters were not around Thursday because the annual New Jersey Firemen's Convention is kicking off today in Atlantic City, sources told ABC News.

The investigation into the cause of the fire has been taken over by the county prosecutor, which officials said was a routine procedure.

From The New Yorker's John Seabrook, with several pics: Fire On the Boardwalk
---
“The f*ck*ng carousel is gone, man!” Tim Donnelly, a surfer and writer who is a longtime resident of the Jersey Shore, said. It was one of the oldest and grandest on the East Coast. “The Beachcomber Bar is gone. It just had a totally new renovation, the owner, he worked so hard, made all these really cool improvements—gone.” He added, “That’s the thing, dude, that part of the boardwalk and the pier took the brunt of Sandy and it survived, man. And now it’s burned to the ground.”

Arson suspected in Jersey Shore boardwalk fire
http://nypost.com/2013/09/13/fire-ravages-jersey-shore-boardwalk/

An inferno that gutted more than 30 Jersey Shore boardwalk businesses and took all night to put out appears “suspicious” — and is being investigated by prosecutors, sources said on Friday.

Investigators are eyeing arson because the blaze erupted midday with no obvious cause — and it just happened to come at the end of the summer season, the sources told ABC News.

The fire is believed to have started under the boardwalk near Kohr’s Custard Stand on Thursday, wiping out six blocks of the boardwalk in Seaside Park.

It is arson and who would set fire on the boardwalk. Good thing no one was killed by the fire.

TOMS RIVER, N.J. (AP) -- Authorities say a massive boardwalk fire in New Jersey was accidental and they have linked it to electrical wiring and equipment they say was compromised by Superstorm Sandy nearly a year ago.

The announcement was made Tuesday, five days after the fire destroyed more than 50 boardwalk businesses in Seaside Park and Seaside Heights.

Investigators say the fire started under a building that housed a candy store and an ice cream stand.
