BREAKING: NY - James Burke, ex-police chief of Suffolk County, arrested for soliciting a male undercover officer, 22 Aug 2023

I've been meaning to tag @hawkshaw on this thought, but my guess is that Brookhaven Rangers or others already had more than "community complaints" about Bald Hill. That kinda thing has been going on there forever. Bald Hill, Exit 52 P&R, etc. Brookhaven Town takes action with plainclothes officers and in mere minutes grabs one of the most notorious local names??? I'm guessing his name, license plate, or some other identifier had already been subject of a complaint. The icing on this theory's cake came after seeing the enthusiasm of the uniformed Brookhaven Sergeant at the press conference to jump in and let the public know that he was soliciting a male. He was gleeful.
He also stepped back to the mic to emphasize that JBurke, tried to get out of it by saying, “do you know who I am?”

The disgraced ex-Gilgo Beach cop James Burke was busted in an area known for gay cruising that is referred to as 'pickle park', when he was caught in a coordinated sting by undercover cops.

Attorney John Ray told DailyMail.com that the former Long Island police commissioner has a 'real devotion for advancing prostitution in his own backyard'.

'He was investigating sex workers like a robber investigates robbers,' Ray said.

Ray did not appear surprised by Burke's recent park arrest and told DailyMail.com and said he 'loves the excitement of risk.'

'I've represented several clients who got arrested like Burke at the park. It's a place for sex pick ups and 'random' sex,' Ray said.

He added: 'Burke was street smart who was praised by his own disciplinary officer as to his street savvy when he was still a police officer, so he would have known that area is a high-risk of arrest trap.'

Very interesting, shocking if true.

Well the story of Burke and Leann (? if that was the name), a very young female who reported being recruited/tricked into sex work by a friend, and who reported getting paid by literally having money thrown at her after being sexually assaulted by Burke, sounds far more violent than the arrest scenario at "pickle park."

Burke is Burke is Burke. Convicted for serious crimes, credibly accused of other serious crimes. But nothing in his most recent arrest makes me jump harder or faster to suspecting him in the murder of Asian Doe.

And, as often happens, Asian Doe is not particularly called out in the text of the article. Just in the headline. And the text is more reasonable.

John Ray has spilled the secrets. He's been a trial attorney there for many years, so he must know quite a few.

JMO, Ray is saying that Burke needs to be investigated for possible involvement in any of the murders not connected to Heuermann. Asian Doe is of some interest because of Burke's recent arrest.

Ray has said before that Burke had relationships with sex workers, some of whom were "madam"s . Now he's naming names.
Burke treated a lot of these people badly when he was chief. Now that he can't take revenge against them, they're finally talking publicly.

Did Rex do computer searches for Asian males?

I live on Long Island. IMO Burke has been thought to be connected to the Gilgo mess for quite a few years.

The comments for this news story are surprisingly insightful.

They ask, where is the talk of payment? And without a payment, is this just anti-dating, or anti-gay dating? And they are right...without payment, assuming privacy and consesuality, there's no crime.

I trust that LE has a good reason for charging with solicitation.

I want to hear more about that payment. And why that detail is not yet public.

But- the public information is that Shannan had bipolar, period. Not bipolar with psychosis.

In addition, nothing seems psychotic in the 911 tape. And if she had seemed psychotic, it still wouldn't explain Brewer and Pak's bizarre behaviors like trying to all leave together, not commenting when she made a blood-curdling scream (as they would if they did not no why she screamed), not calling 911 themselves, etc.

So it is irrelevant. But people keep bringing up her intoxication and alleged mental illness as if intoxicated or mentally ill people are by definition not murder victims.

MOO
Trust me I work with many psychotic people And always firmly believed Shannan was NOT having a psychotic episode. the point of my post was that psychosis in bipolar mania is very common even for for those that might not have been diagnosed with the psychotic specification. It’s something that can happen and more common with untreated BP D/O. IMO opinion Shannon was not psychotic. so I actually agree with you.

This can't be a coincidence, right? RH was just arrested a little over a month ago and now JB is arrested. What is happening?

But, he did expose himself in public which is a separate charge from solicitation. He was the one offering sex so the undercover agent did not pay JB.

However, other cases remain unsolved, including an unidentified Asian male known as "John Doe #8," whose skeletal remains were found in April 2011.

The victim, dressed in women's clothing, suffered severe trauma to the skull, possibly from a gunshot.

Ray argues that Burke's past behavior and involvement in hindering investigations warrant a closer examination of his potential connection to these unsolved murders.

Burke's history includes allegations of violence, drug use, cross-dressing, and close relations with sex workers.

In 2012, he was arrested for having sex with a sex worker and convicted drug dealer in his patrol car.

One of the sex workers with whom Burke had relations, Lawrita Rickenbacker, became his on-and-off girlfriend. Additionally, Burke was closely associated with Heather Malone, who ran a prostitution ring in the 1990s. Ray claims that during their sexual encounters, Burke often cross-dressed.

Despite these activities being widely known, neither Rickenbacker nor Malone faced any charges, suggesting a higher level of corruption within the Suffolk County ranks.

Does anyone know what neighborhood JB grew up in and/or what HS he attended. I can’t shake the feeling he knew RH, somehow.

“It's ironic, then, that Suffolk itself became known for a brutal murder case. On April 21, 1979, Joseph Sabina found his 13-year-old neighbor John Pius Jr. lying motionless in the yard of Dogwood Elementary School. Stones had been stuffed down his throat to asphyxiate him. The resulting trial was an odd convergence of the people who would run the county's law enforcement apparatus years later: The prosecutor assigned to the case was a young Spota, and Burke, then 14 years old, served as one of Spota's key witnesses. In the end, Smithtown locals Michael Quartararo, his brother Peter Quartararo, Thomas Ryan, and Bresnic—all high school–aged boys—were convicted of the murder.”

I'm not sure.

im hardly an expert on legal matters or the sex trade, but my non-expert belief is:

1) solicitation means buying an illegal act, not doing the illegal act IIRC

2) it is common for sex workers, who don't want to be caught in a sting, to ask for proof that a person is not LE. Exposing oneself would That, since LE would not do that while intending to arrest.

a. I think the undercover asked Burke to prove he was not a cop (but did not ask him explicitly to expose himself) in order to appear more realistic as an undercover.

The wording was confusing because the payment arrangements have not been disclosed.
