BREAKING: UPS cargo plane, a McDonnell Douglas MD-11, crashes near Louisville International Airport in Kentucky

Comparing this to the 1979 AA191 crash, where the bolts in the pylon failed and engine dropped off on the runway.

This engine sure appears mangled.

However, these are media images and who knows what they are able to scrape up from an accident scene at a distance.

The 1979 pic is poor quality, but I see the casing and pylon on the runway.

But UPS engine looks like maybe internal engine issues and not just an engine "falling" off? (Maybe a fire?)

There is also an image from 1979 of one of the engines at the crash site. It was one of the things that was intact.

ETA:
Found a few more images of the 1979 engine. It pretty much looks intact.

I saw an interview yesterday with a man who was at the bar that barely missed being destroyed. He was mostly worried about his daughter, who worked at the Ford facility. Thankfully, she was not injured and unlike him did not see the crash.

He also said that the pilots were heroes for doing their best to make sure the plane landed in an unpopulated area. They didn't quite accomplish that.
I don't know how long the plane was in the air, but when the bell went off, (as heard on the CVR) it crashed only 25 secs later.

I watched a UPS plane take off from the same runway on FlightRadar24.com today. In the end, it appears this plane deviated from the path by only 100 feet or so. Apparently, it grazed a UPS facility first. The plane was only 1/2 mile from the end of the runway until it hit the petroleum tanks.

Kentucky officials on Wednesday named the 14 victims who died in the UPS cargo plane crash last week.

The victims include: Capt. Dana Diamond, 62; Capt. Richard Wartenberg, 57; First Officer Lee Truitt, 45; Angela Anderson, 45; Carlos Fernandez, 52; Trinadette “Trina” Chavez, 37; Tony Crain, 65; John Loucks, 52; John Spray, 45; Matthew Sweets, 37; Ella Petty Whorton, 31; Megan Washburn, 35; Louisnes Fedon, 47; and his 3-year-old granddaughter Kimberly Asa.

UPS had previously identified Wartenberg, Truitt and Diamond, as pilots for its company. Sean Garber, who owns one of the businesses struck by the explosion, Grade A Auto Parts and Scrap Metal Recycling, said the other victims were either customers or employees of his business.

Thank you @IceIce9 for posting the full victim list.
Heartbreaking.
Utmost condolences to the surviving families and hope they get answers.

The retrieval of the black boxes is good but will not reflect any maintenance work done ?

If it was older/ worn out/ failed faulty parts, or if there was a mistake or negligence in the part of the maintenance.
Airplane maintenance is usually very painstaking and thorough, so possible a newer employee who made an honest mistake in reattaching the engine ?

We don't know exactly what repairs were conducted so hopefully the FAA will be going over everything with a fine tooth comb, so to speak.
All of this the families deserve to know how or why this unspeakable tragedy occurred, so it doesn't happen again.
Imo.

I have confident that the NTSB will discover the cause(s) of this crash. The black boxes, the wreckage, the maintenance records will be scrutinized to the nth degree.

National Transportation Safety Board's preliminary report on Louisville UPS plane crash.

The UPS plane that crashed had GE engines. It was manufactured by Mc
Donnell Douglas, which is now owned by Boeing.

The metal thing that held the left engine to the wing broke. The area that broke wasn't due for inspection for a while. There was a spherical bearing in the wing clevis that wasn't in good shape.

The plane's landing gear hit a UPS warehouse, then a few other things before it hit the petroleum recycling facility.

Prayers for the victims and families.

Wow, those images are incredible!! I thought that the fire started prior to take off based upon the earlier video we saw, but that doesn't seem to be the case. That engine just separates and goes up over the wing (which is also very similar to AA-191. Does the engine go back to damage the tail engine? I can't tell. It is just amazing that these photos exists to help with the investigation.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Families of UPS crash victims are joining together in a lawsuit seeking justice for last week's deadly crash in Louisville.

The lawsuit was filed against UPS, General Electric and Boeing, claiming the companies' recklessness contributed to the plane crash that killed at least 14 people. Shakeara Ware, who lives near the crash site, joined Triple D, Inc., and Ensey LLC, in the class action complaint filed by Morgan & Morgan. Triple D is an auto repair shop on Knopp Avenue destroyed by the plane, and Ensey LLC, owns the building where Triple D, Inc., operates, according to Jefferson County property records.
