Bret Michaels Rushed to ICU with Brain Hemorrhage

On my local news, it said he was from my area..........never knew that..........

Kateyes: Yes, retired.

On the other hand, I personally know a man who had a brain bleed due to a Circle of Wills aneurysm and they went in and repaired it. He does have residual motor damage, but is actually doing quite well. Has returned to work, continues in a physcial therapy program. He is 48 years old.

Regarding the knock on the head months ago - I honestly think if that event caused a brain bleed there would have been symptoms long before this. The brain is SO sensitive to any change in environment - I am surely no expert, but can't imagine having a "slow bleed" going on for months.

Any other opinions on that?

AlwaysShocked - Thanks for the info on the man with the circle of Willis - that is a good story, and most of us RNs have a least one story of someone who has done well when the prognosis might not have been so bright. I took care of a young woman who purposely plunged her car off a cliff in an attempt to commit suicide. Instead she sustained a subdural hematoma and had emergency surgery. She was actually decerbrate after surgery for a while, but eventually went on to make a full cognitive recovery with some left-sided hemiparesis. Her family brought tapes of her 5 year old daughter and played them to her constantly. Later she verbally recalled hearing those tapes.

I agree with you on your opinion as to the knock on the head months ago - I too think symptoms should have appeared prior to this. I had been pulled to the ER once (the ICU for some strange reason was slow) and a 49 year old woman came in via ambulance. She had been found comatose by her husband that morning. She had emergency, and made it out of surgery, but did not live very long. Her family requested an autopsy, and also met with the pathologist after the post-mortem was done. One of her daughters recalled they had been together shopping when her mother opened the car door to get in and hit her head with the door. The woman did not complain of anything after that, and her husband never knew about the incident. The daughter who saw the incident didn't realize it was of any importance until the pathologist asked specific questions. That incident, though, happened only about 10 days prior to the woman being found comatose.

I hope that it is a Circle of Willis aneurysm, for Brett's sake, and that his outcome will match that of the man you know. At the present time, though, it doesn't sound good. Prayers for Brett and his family.

Is it me, or does anyone else think that Donald Trump needs to guard his words... now he has the rumor going that Bret's condition is grave. It is popping up on gossip blogs and Twitter...

I really think the bleed has to do with his Diabetes. My son has diabetes and has Diabetic Retinopathy. The blood vessels in the back of his eye will burst and bleed and he will have to be rushed to the eye doctor to have laser surgery to stop the bleeding and prevent detachment of the retina.

This usually happens when his blood pressure is high. People with Diabetes really have to watch their blood pressure. Cardiovascular disease along with Diabetes can be so dangerous!

Respectully snipped!

Why yes it is! Gypsy Road was blasting from my stereo (much to my husband's dismay) last year when I signed up here on Websleuths, so that became my screen name. It's still one of my favorite songs ever from one of my favorite bands. Cinderella is touring again this year since Tom got his vocals back, and I hope they come southward 'cause I'll be there! Long live glam rock!! I think Cinderella is one of the most underated bands of the late 80's early 90's. Just my opinion though. They just don't make music like they used to.

Hoping Bret gets well. I missed Larry King earlier, but will catch it when it comes back around. Things aren't sounding good, but I'm keeping him and his family in my prayers.

I agree with this. It's extremely unlikely that the blow to the head that occurred months ago caused a slow bleed, especially since Bret reported a sudden "thunderclap headache", which is indicative of a rapid-onset subarachnoid hemorrhage.

Also, just to clarify, a subarachnoid hemorrhage is a type of stroke. Between 1 and 7 percent of all strokes are subarachnoid hemorrhages. There's an article addressing it here if you're interested: http://stroke.ahajournals.org/cgi/content/full/36/12/2773.

Still hoping for Bret.

Larry King has this on tonight at midnight if anyone wants to see it. Very sad though because is not a good outcome.

Special prayers for him tonight.

I so agree Dolly. Blessings to your son too again.
Sidenote, Being a Juvenile Diabetic as Bret is, I had my eyes checked today and good news, no problems. I have had one laser surgery years ago. I thought I would spread some cheer along to all. I am so very happy. Thank God.

My prayers again today are with Bret for a speedy recovery. Bless his heart.
I am praying that his condition improves. My prayers are also with his family during this difficult period.

Amen

Thanks for posting the transcript. Sad, sad, sad - still doesn't sound good at all for Bret. Still praying for Bret and his family.

Dosen't sound good at all :(

ET has the latest on Bret Michaels' condition.
A source close to the family of the 47-year-old Poison frontman and "Celebrity Apprentice" contestant tells ET that Michaels will soon be undergoing surgery to relieve swelling around his brain. His condition is said to be deteriorating following a massive hemorrhage he suffered last Thursday.
Some believe it was an accident last June at the Tony Awards, where he collided with a set piece while performing on stage, that may have led to the problem.

So glad youre eye exam was good, Goz!! Take care!! Love. Dolly :blowkiss:

Continued prayers for Bret!!

After reading the transcript of LKL i am somewhat more encouraged, although I am a bit skeptical about the reports of him talking, especially since ET has a source that describes his condition as "deteriorating". But I am continuing to remain hopeful, and prayers for Brett and his family.

(CBS/AP) Rocker Bret Michaels' father says his son, being hospitalized in Arizona for a brain hemorrhage, has spoken to him on the phone.

"Extra" spoke with the former Poison frontman's father, Wally Sychak, at his home in Pennsylvania. Sychak said the ailing "Celebrity Apprentice" contestant is improving.

"Well, the fact that he was talking to me, and giving me information, I thought that was great. I understood that this was a terrible ordeal that he was going through. We're not getting information right now. I guess no news is good news," Sychak said.

When talking to his son on the phone, he said, "He sounded a little slow, but fine. He was talking, not as cheerful as he usually is. But I guess he is under sedation. But he understood what he was saying and knew me. Everything seemed good that way."

He also said Michaels is starting to move his limbs again.

"They say he's moving his arms and hands. The best as they could expect at this time," his father told Extra.

"Celebrity Apprentice" creator Donald Trump, who usually shows his contestants tough love, is also showing his genuine concern for Micheals.

He appeared on NBC's TODAY Show this morning and called the rocker "a really an amazingly competitive guy" and said that he feels guilty for being so hard on him.

"Celebrity Apprentice" involves a tough schedule, Trump admits.

"He was working 24 hours a day and it's tough," he said. "He would work so hard and I really gained respect for him."

Michaels, who is competing to raise money for his charity, diabetes research, has served as one of the season's most outspoken celebrities and has so far avoided being fired in the boardroom.

Trump also mentioned that Michaels was really distraught when he found out that his daughter also has diabetes.

As for the competitive reality show, it must go on, and the final live episode will scheduled to air in four weeks. Thanks to taped reality TV shows, Michaels also remains as a contestant to become Trump's next "Celebrity Apprentice."

But Trump isn't too concerned about that right now - just Michaels' recovery.

"Forget the show, he's such a nice guy. I just hope he makes it," he said.

Michaels' New York-based publicist, Joann Mignano, confirmed on Friday a report on People magazine's website that said the former Poison frontman was rushed to intensive care late Thursday after a severe headache. Doctors discovered bleeding at the base of his brain stem, the report said.

Some of Michaels' "Celebrity Apprentice" teammates took to their Twitter accounts to express concern for their co-star.

Sharon Osbourne wrote "I'm thinking of you and wishing you a speedy recovery" to Michaels on her Twitter page.

Holly Robinson Peete acknowledged that Sunday night's episode was a big win for her charity, but added that she will feel "MUCH better when Bret does."

Michaels had an emergency appendectomy April 12 after complaining of stomach pains before he was scheduled to perform at Sea World in San Antonio. Michaels later wrote on his website that although the surgery "has taken its toll," doctors expected him to make a full recovery.

Before joining the third season of "The Celebrity Apprentice," Michaels starred as the lothario on VH1's lusty reality dating series "Rock of Love" from 2007 to 2009. For three seasons, Michaels searched for the women of his dreams amid a sea of implants, tattoos and thongs. He also served as a judge on the fifth season of the USA singing competition "Nashville Star" in 2007.

Dang it I though it was better news now we got this :(

Sadly, it seems the Poison star and Celebrity Apprentice contestant may have taken a turn for the worst. Bret will soon be undergoing surgery to relieve swelling around his brain, a family insider spilled to television newsmagazine Entertainment Tonight.

“His condition is said to be deteriorating following a massive hemorrhage he suffered last Thursday,” the site writes.
A rep for the site has also stepped forward to deny reports that the rocker died.
“There’s a rumor out there that Bret passed. It isn’t true,” says the rep.
In the meantime, speculation continues to mount that Bret’s potentially-fatal aneurysm may have been triggered by his recent appendectomy or the injury he suffered after being struck in the head by a prop at the 2009 Tony Awards

last June.

"Surgery to relieve brain swelling" is not good, "condition deteriorating" is not good.

Dr. Gupta gave statistics in his Larry King interview. He states this type of bleed is usually NOT related to diabetes, nor would it be related to blow on the head of almost a year ago.

Sometimes they just cannot locate the source of the bleed. 50% of these patients die by 30 days out from event. Those who survive can be left with paralysis and brain damage.

How very, very sad for this young man.

I was feeling a bit more hopeful after watching Dr. Gupta last nite on LKL. And I was even hoping that maybe Donald Trump was exaggerating the situation to boost ratings. (I know. That would be really low, right? But I could see Trump do it, I'm sad to say) Anyway, but now....I just have a really bad feeling this is not going to end well. And that makes me really really sad. I like Bret. Seems like a genuinely good guy. And such a loving dad.

So he has to have surgery to relieve swelling around his brain but they still haven't been able to locate the source of the bleeding?
