This was not a serial killer. This was personal. The RN is just another way of inflicting fear and panic. Maybe the killer even gained some pleasure from having the R's think it was a kidnapping and having hope their little one is alive, only to watch them have those hopes curshed in the end. Look at the way the body was left. More humiliation.
The body was left wrapped neatly in a blanket, a white blanket at that.
I'm sorry, but I find it nearly impossible to think that an intruder/ foreign faction would leave the body like that. Add to that the barbie nightie and her own father finding the body......

I'm sorry, but your point that her own father found the body doesn't add to or subtract from his suspiciousness, when you consider LE asked him to search the house, and in the course of doing so found JBR.

If its a SK, IMO the killer would fall into the organized, mission-oriented type.
.
If one accepts wikipedia as a source (a dubious propostion in general, although this section looks okay) what "mission" would you suspect? Getting rid of 6 year old beauty pageant contestants? Any others killed to make this a serial event?
Any actual physical evidence suggesting an intruder?

None that I've seen
However if the R's went to all the trouble to stage this crime,
circle words in the dictionary,
molest thier 6 year old with a paint brush,
write a 3 page ransome note in which they cross out the word delivery and replace it with pickup?
If they know she's dead and the RN is fake then why would they care what word they used there?
Why would they not leave an obvious sign of break in?
Why would they call the police 3 hours early then they had to?

Yeah well, it adds to my suspicions, regardless of whether or not LE asked him to search the house.
We all know Arndt was out of her depth at that stage.

The NOTE was evidence. The note seems to be taunting John a lot, as if he might have some idea who wrote it but also a reason not to report them. Also sounds like someone who'd spied on the R family a lot, even studied PR's hand-writing. Maybe he'd been refused some extortion money or not obeyed at some previous time long before this murder. Just guessing. Just a thought.

And there's the DNA, broken paint brush, etc. The staged things such as the open dictionary.

I don't think it matters much whether he came in at the broken window or some other place.
