Brown Widow Spiders

Wow. Brown recluses are terrifying and they hide out in and around beds. My friend got bitten by one where her ear connects to her head. She didn't have to be hospitalized like your husband, but she really went through it - months of drs visits, drainings, antibiotics, narcotics, etc... and the skin surrounding the area is still all messed up.

Those things scare the bejesus out of me too. If you google brown recluse bite photographs, you'll bring up gruesome pictures.

So glad your husband survived. They can, as you said, kill.

Thank you! They said he was probably bit multiple times, so I guess that's why it was so bad. Had it not been for his size, he would have been in big trouble.

My yard and house are being sprayed next week. I just seutp the appointment. I have seen 2 black widows and a brown recluse in the last 2 weeks. All outside, thankfully.

he had the vaccine, and he doesn' have any other symptoms. Weird,huh?

In person they look like the same type of blister you get if you wear shoes that don't fit right-except that they are filled with a yellowish type of fluid, and they are very raised.

How do you know if they're around? I'm always hearing we swallow spiders while asleep, then a kid has spiders residing in his ears and now this! EEEEK! My Dh is no help, either, he is terrified of spiders!

missie i would take him to the dr. it may be impetigo. its caused by the same virus that causes strep. i'll send u a pic of those blisters. if he is not feeling sick no real need for you to worry much.

Impetigo that is caused by staphylococcus aureus triggers larger fluid-containing blisters that appear clear, then cloudy. These blisters are more likely to stay intact longer on the skin without bursting.

only a real doctor can know for sure what he has. i wish you the best of luck with it.

eve - WOW what a story.

My DH is no better either.

What happens if one of my 4 cats decides to eat one of them? My kitties might play with a bug or two now and then and sometimes the bug ends up as a snack. I would like to know if anyone knows how we can protect against them.

I'm in IL and if they are in MN then no doubt IL would have them too.

Thank you sherri79. I'm going to look into that some more. I thought impetigo was cause by "uncleanly" conditions, but maybe I am wrong.

i thought so as well. then when i saw your pic i did a search of kids skin infections and blisters. it seems getting it is not hard. its a infection caused from the strep virus and can enter through any small cut scrape or bug bite.

the unclean part comes from kids scrathing at it after the blisters burst and then spreading it as they scratch with dirty nails. then a child will have many open blisters and if you dont keep them clean you get a magor infection. at least this is what i got from the medical sites i saw.

i guess its like lice. any kid can pick it up at school. getting it dont make you dirty just keeping it.

I hate spiders! Makes me itch just reading about them. Seriously I have been itching my arms just reading this thread.

We thought we had brown recluse in our shed but had it checked and it was a copycat version of it. Im all for saving animals but I can honestly say that is one thing I would not mind getting rid of completely.

I live in michigan and they are popular up here. I also have seen two black widows and a tarantula hiking in scottsdale, arizona. I was only 15 and had no idea about the dangers and would regularly sunbathe with just a thin towel on the grass. Im lucky I didnt get bit by something. We also had a scorpion get in the house before, Now that was scary and they had to fumigate the house.

It does kinda look like it and it looks like it can be spread through just contact sports or playing with his friends maybe? I would take him to the dr because if it is impetigo it says you have to dissolve the scabs with ointment. Its also contagious and could spread to others.

I looked it up a little more, definitely can't rule it out. Thank you for your help sherri79. I was so convinced it was a bug bite of some type that I wasn't thinking about infections anymore.
My husband killed a brown recluse in our front yard the other day, it was in our "rock garden" thing. We have a guy that comes and sprays every 3 months just as a preventive measure. I've never seen any spiders in the house, but I've seen a few in the garage.

Good Luck I hope its just some kind of funny rash instead of having to deal with this. If it were me I would cover them with a bandaid for the time being. Is your son old enough as to where he would leave it on and not itch it?

MissieMt, the way you describe them, they sound like a fire ant bite but looking at the pictures they appear to be to big for fire ants. Do they itch or anything? Is the skin around them hot to the touch?
Those are some funky looking bites that I think I would be getting checked out.

What a horrible awful thread. I am scared to death of spiders. For the longest time I denied it and used to say I just thought they were 'yucky' - kind of how I wouldn't touch dog poo either. All the time I knew I was just plain old scared. And still I had to open it.... kind of like watching a train wreck. I wish whoever said that about swallowing spiders while we sleep hadn't said that.... I'll be sleepless all night at least! :shock:

Amazing to find this thread here today! On Saturday I got a small bite at the top of my cheekbone, by the outer edge of my eye. It would itch off and on intensly, and then I would feel little stab of pain all for several hours. I put lemon juice on it as they say that takes the poisin out.

On Wed I woke up with an earache. Today I still have that earache and feel so nauseous I am not working. It is an agrivating discomfort. The bite isn't red, just a little puff around it. I am sure it was from some little spider, and don't know what to do. I was driving in my car when I felt it start to itch like crazy! I can't see going to the doctor for this, so I thought I'd see if anyone has any ideas.

Jeana, I am so thankful your hubby is OK. What an ordeal!
And MissieMt, I hope your son will be OK too. Glad he has you for a mom. ;}
