‘Horrible Way to Die’: Dead Body Found
In Stone Pillar in California Grocery Store

LANCASTER, Ca. -- A dead body found inside a stone pillar outside a Lancaster grocery store on Saturday afternoon could be the remains of a man who was fleeing from authorities earlier in the week, a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department lieutenant said.

After a strong odor led to the grisly discovery, authorities said it's possible the body belongs to a man who ran into the store on Monday — fleeing from deputies as he was suspected of stealing a vehicle.

From one of the links:
It's possible the man fell or climbed into the pillar to hide from law enforcement. But with the recent heat wave and the density of the stone pillar, it's possible the man then became trapped and unable to breathe, Corina said, describing it as a "horrible way to die."
That is awful. I expected this to be an "old" case, not a recent body. Wow

Me too! I thought mummified remains from thirty years ago, maybe.

OT, but thanks to the reporter who wrote the story and used the proper spelling of 'grisly'. I'm not usually a pedant about these things, but people (including many reporters) keep spelling it 'grizzly'. The latter is a bear, not and adjective.

I didn’t realize those types of pillars were ever left open at the top, not a smart place to hide either way. Regardless of terrible life choices it’s a bad way to die. I wonder if anyone “heard” him but didn’t realize someone was stuck in the pillar. Horrible discover for the plumber.

Same ^ they look like they are completely closed off and connected to the building. We have some pillars similar at my office but they are completely solid, I watched them being constructed!

Yikes. How awful. Weird that deceased people, mostly men, are sometimed found in walls, overhead exhaust systems, fireplace flue, a/c ductwork. Just gives me the heebies at the mere thought of being in such a tight place to begin with-- but to perish there? OMG.

Reminds of the man bricked into the wall in the Poe story: "For the love of God, Montressor!"
