People can gamble anywhere. Is there no off racetrack gambling in the US? No poker machines outside of Vegas. The person that I knew who was a gambling addict was before the Internet and he found plenty of places to gamble.

In Texas, where they lived at one point, gambling is illegal. The only place that it is allowed is in one casino near the border with Mexico in Eagle Pass, Texas, which is a casino operated on former Native American land. There are two other Native American casinos that the State says are illegal I think. The one in Eagle Pass is a 6 hour drive from the Dallas/Fort Worth area. There is horse racing though. I think they spent about $2.50 a day on the 12 kids for a jar of peanut butter and about $2.50 a day for a loaf of bread. That would pretty much account for the once-a-day meal that the kids had (sometimes there was bologna instead of peanut butter, and sometimes frozen burritos).

So they spent $5 a day for the 12 kids for food (about $150 a month). That means they spent about $150 per month on the entire set of kids they held captive + a couple of dollars for drinking out of the kitchen faucet for the water they drank.

As far as the $2,500 they claimed, 94 % of it was for Louise and David and their dogs (who they apparently fed), not the kids, who they were systematically starving as if the house was some sort of Nazi concentration camp. Who knows where most of the $2,500 per month went --- compulsive purchases, gambling? I will bet that the authorities will look at the credit card purchases through a subpoena and get a very precise idea of what exactly they were spending their money on. I'll bet it will be shocking.

Really? People do spend money on in today's World? It's free. All the things you can possibly think about: free. Having actual sex, also very easy to get for free with a simple free app.
I think they spent money on stupid stuff like movies, wedding dresses, toys that were never open, pies that were left to get moldy, a huge Nativity Scene for Christmas (I saw a picture of their actual Nativity Scene, it was super big), and stuff that people don't actually need.

I was raised by a bi polar nurse and an alcoholic father who was a professor at the local university. My mother would either clean obsessively or allow the house to become filthy to the point that had child services ever come to our house we would have been removed (cats allowed to relieve themselves throughout house and not cleaned up for months at a time among other things). We were always told it was our fault our home was the way it was and if we were better children our home wouldn’t be the way it was. Eventually she would clean it up. Well, as good as you could clean it after months of filth building up. However, she wouldn’t clean our rooms. Instead she’d leave us, as children, responsible to clean our rooms because, in her opinion and words we were so bad and worthless and caused the house to be like it was. This resulted in the rooms only being cleaned as well as young children could which wasn’t well at all! So we grew up in a filthy environment that was her way of punishing us (mostly just for existing more than anything else). So what you wrote and I quoted above rings true to me. And while I’m pretty sure there is some mental illness going on with LT, she knew it was wrong to keep her kids in filth as evidenced by the vacation clothes and baths.

My own experience gives me hope that these children can learn a normal, healthy way to live. I have.

Yes. In the first few weeks after they were arrested, LE came out and said that all of the siblings were both LT and DT's children. The next oldest is a 11-year-old girl, turning 12 this year I think. She is the one with a bunch of medical problems and I think that she was one of the girls that were chained when the 17-year-old sister ran away to get help.

Did anyone follow the feed of Rob McMillan on the preliminary hearing?

He included some details that I did not see previously. For example, I read these 3 things from his account of the preliminary hearing:

-The width of the emaciated arms of the chained up girls was about 2 inches.
-The children had lice in their hair and being shackled meant they could not even scratch their heads.
-When the parents abandoned the kids in the trailer, they didn't move nearby. The parents moved 50 miles away.

Being made a Ward of the State is simply a legal protection for people who are unable to make important decisions for themselves. That would apparently apply to all the Turpin adults at this time, but perhaps not always, as they become more savvy. IMO their lives as wards of the state would be more normal because of this assistance. There’s no reason they couldn’t go out in public, and lead normal lives, but at this point they need help to do so and probably protection from any who would want to exploit them.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure they will live a fairly normal life, which might mean get a job, go grocery shopping, get a driver's license and all of that. They actually have guidance and support right now. I don't think it would be safe for them to just be left alone in the real world. They don't know how to get a job, they don't know how to vote, they probably don't even know how much is a dollar. It's very sad but these people need to learn all how to do the small things, they need to learn how to take care of themselves before they can go on their own. They need help, it's a long road and they need to take little steps.

I have to disagree that they will likely live fairly normal lives. Especially the oldest victims. I’m the same age as the oldest, give or take, and I can’t fathom only being a free human for the first time at this age. The things I experienced in high school through my late 20s shaped me as a person, and I think this is true for many people. The 17 year old didn’t know how to pronounce Texas. They have had either very limited or zero socialization with peers their own age outside of family. I have a strong feeling this is going to be a long, uphill battle for them. Even the most resilient human in the world would have a very tough time living a “normal” life after what these victims have been through. Two of them can’t bear children due to the abuse they suffered.

I do agree that it is not safe or wise for them to be without guidance right now. While I really hope I am wrong, I just don’t know if some of them will ever live “normal” lives.

- Detective says older kids were allowed to watch TV if they helped with mother. And oldest kids were able to sometimes leave home as long as with mother [to do what?].

Oh dear God. I bet that that is why two of them will be unable to have children. Salpingitis caused by bacterial infection.
