I noticed the article didn't have a date...
APRIL 19
DA: Southern California couple who kept kids in filthy house 'will serve the rest of their lives in prison'
The plea deal for David Turpin, 57, and Louise Turpin, 50, means they will not stand trial. After initially pleading not guilty to all charges last year, the couple will be sentenced on April 19.

The two will be sentenced to up to life in prison April 19, Riverside District Attorney Mike Hestrin said.

Attorneys for the couple did not immediately respond Friday to a request for comment on the plea agreement and sentencing, which will take place April 19.

I’m stunned because I thought these two were so self - absorbed and narcissistic, they would drag it out to the end. I’m soooooo relieved for the kids. Kudos to the attorneys who protected them from furthering their torment by having to go through a trial. This is very good news. I’m glad we will not know the extent of what they went through. The siblings have been through enough! IMO

Thank goodness they pled guilty. Their children will be spared from testifying.

The money is probably going to the lender. I believe the house is in foreclosure.
I agree -- the couple has been in the slammer for a while -- was there anyone on the outside who would/could keep up their mortgage payments? I doubt it, so it seems to me that the house should be in foreclosure. Dunno about the parents' cash situation, but I would guess it wasn't that good, even before they were arrested. I wonder how much disclosure about the house is required to be given by the realtors to prospective buyers -- it can vary from state to state. It'll be interesting to watch, IMO. Thinking about that house makes me <shiver>, and then I'm angry enuff to scream, and then to just cry.:mad::(

Continued thoughts with the children. May they heal and learn they are loved! Those so many in this thread alone that care deeply about them. May all the lies their parents told them be erased by showing them the truth! May they learn to become independent, and have healthy lives.

To the parents, I hope they never get out of prison!

Thank you Pi Thoughts & SeesSeas for the sentencing date! April 19th it is.

Riverside County has one of the highest "Plea Deals" in the State of California, last time I read it was 90% of their cases. The Turpin's got 25-life, which means they will probably die in prison before any chance of parole, IMO.

I read (somewhere) that they won't be eligible for parole until 2044.

They need life in prison. They are absolutely disgusting. Only allowed their children to shower once a year?

I saw the hearing on tv, the woman needs to be slapped for her pity party cry fest. She doesn't care about her children, she is crying for herself. There is no potential for rehabilitation here. Zero. I am glad she was charged. She could have gone for help at any point in time.

Wow what an unexpected turn of events! Good for the children though that they don’t have to be further tormented by this pair of pure evil torturers. God bless the attorneys for arranging the plea deal so they are not allowed to repeat these offenses!

In cases where there is overwhelming evidence of guilt, I appreciate plea deals due to the cost savings. This will also be much better for the victims. They will not have to face their parents in court, and will have the choice to decide for themselves, privately, if they ever want contact again. Its the best outcome in a horrific situation.

Awesome news! Maybe somewhere down inside, they realized the magnitude of what they'd done, and then, felt remorse. This could be some sort of apology, of sorts, to their children, admitting their guilt, thereby the kids would not have to relive all those horrific years of abuse, on a witness stand.

On the other hand, the realist in me, says, they didn't want THEIR sordid past to come falling out, for all the world to see. We already know about the motel hook-ups. There could be even more stuff in their history, that could come out at trial, that would make Beelzebub blush.

We all have so much hope that these children heal and lead happy lives now. These terrible parents finally had enough decency to do the right thing with their plea. Good job by the prosecutor and defense attorneys who led the parents to the most compassionate decision. Prayers for the children.

What a difference a year makes. These young adults and children have undoubtedly grown and matured from good nutrition and healthcare. How nice it is to hear they’re moving forward and learning to live normally. I love thinking about how they have the freedom to take a shower and climb into a clean bed at night with a full belly. I hope that the cognitive delays from years of starvation can be overcome. I love that the 7 older ones live together. How comforting that must be to them. They can teach other life skills and tutor each other in their educational materials. I hope they make friends and have a nice social group to hang out with.

Extract from article dated Nov 22, 2018:

After recovering from their horrifying ordeal in hospital, the children are now said to be much happier, and living in three separate homes in Riverside County, California, reports CNN.

Although often referred to as children, seven of the Turpin 13 are in fact adults. The adults spent time recovering at the Corona Regional Medical Centre for two months shortly after their rescue. When it came to the six remaining children, authorities found difficulty in finding a home in which they could all live together. Eventually, two of the youngest kids were put into foster care, CNN reports.

As it stands, all of the seven adult escapees are living together in the same house, whilst the younger children reportedly stay in touch over Skype.

An attorney for the adult children told CNN, "Our clients are relieved that there will not be a trial and they are happy the district attorney was able to achieve this result. The adult children are doing ‘very well’. They have been living together, getting their education and moving their lives forward. They are all extremely bright, incredibly strong and resilient. They have been supportive of each other. They view themselves as survivors."

With professional help together with support from their older siblings, I hope the younger children will eventually emerge from this shocking life of abuse and go on to lead happy, healthy lives. The parents deserve to spend the rest of their lives in prison. No doubt prison inmates will mete out some harsh punishment of their own.

No-one here would be surprised to learn that the mother shed tears for herself as she pleaded guilty, but I haven't seen any for her children yet.

Video shows the house still looks like a pigpen one year later.

That is the most satisfying sentence I have read all year!
Agreed.
Now they will learn what never being able to walk on fresh grass, or to throw a snowball or baseball, or dance in the rain, or to plant pretty flowers and bulbs and watch them grow, or picnic at a lake, or running into waves on the beach, walking a dog, riding a horse, making and baking a pizza, hamburgers on the grill, etc., etc. is like. For life.
I want to think that the children and young adults of that family are getting along well. I would very much like to hear a good report about them, but their privacy is more important.

It is good that the older siblings are together -- but they will need lots of therapy, IMO, and they will need to learn/study a lot about what it is like to be 18 years old, or 20, or whatever. They have probably never driven a car; gone shopping for food, shopping for clothes (go to dressing room), or shoes; gone to a doctor for checkups, or glasses; gone to a dentist? Do they know how to brush their teeth, wash their hair, iron a shirt, run a washing machine (what is detergent?) or dryer, fix a bowl of soup, vacuum a carpet, how to respond to a smoke alarm, how to brew tea or coffee, to make a cake or pie, sweep the floor, what paper towels are for, take out the trash, lock and unlock a door or window, file or clip their nails, use a phone, use a computer or a computer keyboard, cell phone, call 911 in an emergency, wrap a present, learn basic American civics, register to vote, buy postage stamps, mail a letter, file their taxes, write a check or use an ATM or a credit/debit card, stop walking at a red light or stop sign, walk a dog, use a soda machine, order a hamburger or a salad at a fast food place, what a menu is, go to a movie, to wake up in the morning and go to bed at night, make up a bed, wear jewelry, tell time, all of that and so much more. They are certainly similar to cave men/women/children who were suddenly dropped into the 21st century. Learning these tasks and learning how to be a person could be a fun adventure if things are/were/will-be made to be that way -- no fear or denigration, oh, it just boggles my mind.
"Developmental deficiencies" was mentioned for the older siblings -- oh, so many, I'm sure.
And this must be done without any hint of punishment, failure or fear. SMH. Praying for them and for their caregivers.
This could be one of the happiest recovery stories we've seen in a long while -- let's hope so.

I was surprised as well, if only for the fact that they get to see each other in court.
