I wonder if any of the children will speak at sentencing.
The guilty pleas were important to spare the children from testifying, though they will be allowed to speak at the sentencing if they choose, said [the District Attorney], who was impressed with their resiliency.
I hadn't heard that they went out for Halloween. If true, I can't imagine they were allowed to eat any of the candy.
The kids were rarely allowed outside but went out on Halloween and traveled as a family to Disneyland and Las Vegas.

I don't believe any of that. She keeps saying they miss the kids or whatever because she's getting paid.

Ugh watching Louise’s sister and brother on the “one year later” show makes my stomach turn. There’s nothing that could convince me they genuinely care/cared about their nieces and nephews. They are all about that 15 min of fame. Their body language and eye movements say it all for me. I think the sister is a flat out liar about even the smallest things. I pray the victims are kept far, far away from all of their family members, since all of them seam toxic imo

Homeschooling's Invisible Children

It is shocking, how many children who are "homeschooled", are actually abused, neglected, starved. I believe that parents should be able to homeschool their children, but I also believe that homeschooled children should be safe. I am not sure how to make this happen, but something should be done to prevent another situation like the Turpin's House of Horror.

I'm sure a lot of home-schooled children are truly being taught and cared for in all of the right ways and do amazingly well at home -- I've seen it be very successful with a couple of friends of mine, but you make a good point about there being abuses in some situations. Children who are mistreated at home go to school with bruises and/or other problems due to abuse. It is reported by the school system, a visit to the home shows trouble, and the kids suddenly are withdrawn from school and are "schooled at home" to avoid another visit, etc., etc.
I remember our sweet Zahra Baker attending public school and then her "stepmother" did not enroll her for her next grade -- she told the school system that she would be home-schooled. Several months later Zahra was missing and LE found evidence that something bad had happened to her, and indeed her wicked stepmother had beat her to death and dismembered her body and hid her body parts.

I don't know what the answer here should be -- parents do have the right to school their children at home, but how much oversight is needed/allowed to make sure things are legit at those homes? And the regulations on this vary from state to state. How can this be accomplished without invading privacy, adding to the state/county personnel workload due to checking these homes and home-school requirements, etc.? Maybe it's not as tuff as I imagine since I have never had this type experience -- so please excuse my ignorance on this, but it is concerning.

Jack Osborn, the attorney for the 7 adult children said, “They're not bitter. They really take every day as it is, as a gift. They came from a situation that seemed normal to them. And now they're in a new normal and so I think they may spend a long time processing the two.”

The children haven't spoken to their parents since their arrest and they’re worried about prospect of facing them in court.

The children want people to know that they’re survivors, not victims.

All the siblings get together often and the older ones frequently visit the younger ones who are in foster care. The older children are extremely protective of the younger ones and these get-togethers involve a lot of nurturing and reassuring. Osborn said, “And one of the things that they're grateful for is they've got each other.”

I am not against homeschooling. But it is a little disconcerting to think that kids that are home-schooled do sometimes become, in some ways, "invisible". almost disappearing from society. Even in this case, some of the neighbors had no idea there were kids in the house, let alone so many of them. But this case, of course, is the extreme. Many home-schooled kids are still involved in extracurricular activities.
The sad truth is, if there is a way to abuse something, somebody will do so. But that in no way means that it should be done away with.

I wish that homeschooled children had more opportunities for a safe space, meaning that mandatory minimum checks 4 times a year, for a week at a time, no medical waivers. The checks would be at home, to see the environment and educational materials. With mandatory testing, to determine baseline levels, and if the child is below the standard, in any percentile, the privilege of "homeschooling" would be discontinued.

In Germany, school attendance for all children is mandatory. I believe that we are not doing enough here in the United States to protect children. Our focus on "life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness" means that we are not protecting children.

In the original model for "homeschooling", there were mandatory weekly assessments of progress. The program had oversight through the public school system and qualified teachers. Both a parent and the child were required to be present for weekly testing and assessment. There are many reasons for the deterioration of the original premise, but the original program was very successfully implemented and became the model for many future successful school districts.

Too bad that model has ended. There are too many "homeschooling" stories that end with dead, missing or severely abused children. And even the recent book, "Educated" by Westover, discusses abusive treatment by an older sibling that went completely unchecked by the parents, and continues with younger siblings even now, since the book has been published.

April 19th.

Sadly, they can't get the death penalty right? (Because they plea-bargained a guilty plea to avoid the trauma of a trial for the kids.)

The couple, scheduled to be sentenced to life in prison on April 19, won’t be eligible for parole for at least 25 years, meaning David Turpin, 57, and his 50-year-old wife are likely to die there.

Although the parents filed reports with the state that they home-schooled their children, the oldest child only completed the third grade.

Some children suffered from severe malnutrition, stunted growth and muscle wasting, including an 11-year-old girl who had arms the size of an infant.

The pair are due to be sentenced by a judge on Friday local time, after pleading guilty to 14 charges of torture, adult abuse, child endangerment, false imprisonment and more.

Under their plea deal, the couple are facing 25 years to life.

Local District Attorney Mike Hestrin has previously indicated to reporters that the sadistic couple are likely to face life behind bars.

Brian Rokos is a reporter with local daily newspaper the Press-Enterprise. He has been covering the Turpin story in court and since it broke last year.

Rokos told nine.com.au that none of the Turpin children had attended court during any of their parents’ hearings.
Because of the guilty plea, the siblings were able to avoid testifying, and David and Louise Turpin have also avoided taking the stand.

However, Rokos said there was a chance some of the siblings may attend Friday’s sentencing.

Yeah, I don't think any of the siblings will attend. I hope they don't.
