Was the name of the college revealed? The reason I'm wondering, our local community college offers many classes on things not really related to a college degree. Like photography. Maybe he was taking a class like that? At any point were the older kids attending a public school.

Unless the journals are of pictures the kids drew, somewhere, somehow they knew how to read and write. Maybe an older sibling showed the younger how to use a cellphone? Someone had to know that 911 existed. If they were kept from watching TV, couldn't read, etc, then they wouldn't have known that. The press conference, it was mentioned some of the of the kids didn't know what a policeman was. That's believable. If the child has mental deficiencies, or has been so shelter they didn't see a policeman, or read about one, how would they know?

I met a lady once whose son was 3 or 4 yrs old at the time. He had an obvious speech impediment to me. The mother didn't notice. When I mentioned it to the Grandma, she said she hadn't paid attention to it, but that the mother didn't speak to the child until he was around 3 and started saying some words. Said the mother didn't think you needed to talk to a baby because they couldn't talk!!! So the Grandma, and Mother thought this was OK to raise a child like that!

As a country, we need to do better with our children. As my husband said, "Okay. This family was caught, but how many more cases are out there?"

Most homeschooling parents do a very good job, but how do we really know what goes on inside a home when a city, county, or state does no checks? Academically, the parental requirement is a h.s. diploma. Seems fine, but how long ago did they get that diploma? Should parents be tested before they are permitted to educate their child? Should there be a background check on who's living in the house?

With no knowledge of home situations and no visits, how can a child be protected? Sandcastle is listed with the State of California as a private school. There was supposed to be a fire check. Never happened, but that would not necessarily have uncovered the abuses. Home schooling, IMO, needs welfare checks and conferences with a child.

I'm not suggesting discontinuing home school, just that we need to do a better job monitoring.

How about proof that all children are taken for yearly medical check ups? That would not help with kids whose births are not registered though.

Same with the district my sons were in, seem to be a mis perception about homeschooling, as opposed to kids who just vanish from society. Seriously, I want to know why Pediatrician practices don't fall under the same scrutiny. Where is the testimony from the Dr's that ever birthed/ treated these people?

We've been scrutinizing everyone we are aware of having contact with these kids in this thread.

My understanding is that Federal funding levels are based on the number of enrollees. That's the reason for daily roll call. Of course, that doesn't affect local and state school board taxes one iota. But I believe all states lose the federal funding when children aren't in the seats in a school building.

This whole conversation about home schooling & taxes, etc. is way off OT, but...there is lots in this post that is factually inaccurate.

Nationwide, state & local taxes pay for approximately 92% of school expense. Education is considered a state, not federal responsibility. The federal government helps pay for specific programs, such as HeadStart, not general education expenses based on headcount.

Back to regularly scheduled programming....

I don't know if it has been mentioned before but the 3 youngest girls look like the have Craniosynostosis where their heads look like a guord shape to me. Agreed. They're probably terrified. And I don;t believe they can feel love for their torturers who tormented them for fun and punished them for nothing.

Remember, they were often punished for MONTHS by being chained to something, for things like washing their wrists.

These poor babies were treated like concentration camp victims.

Yes, and we keep hearing the siblings feel relieved. Imagine how refreshing they must feel to be clean, wear clean clothes, be in a clean bed with clean linens, have the antibiotics kick in to cure what ails them, have the nutrients from their IVs, to start eating food, to be treated with kindness and respect. Wow - they must be feeling relieved indeed.

You know that almost euphoric feeling when you're sick and then start to feel better? They must be experiencing that 10x greater.

I'll see that bet and raise you this: They had to pay to get in the darn park. Why would they not go on any rides. and what would make you think that they didn't? Because you weren't privy to the visual proof? Embellishing the horror is unnecessary imo.

I posted earlier that I suspect those photos were staged. There are no photos of anyone coming off a ride, or standing in a line, not even the lovebirds. No, I don't believe they went on rides at the park. But, I could be wrong. Embellishing the horror? How is that even possible, in this case. Can't get much worse. In my own opinion.

I think the homeschooling is sorta OT but also somewhat relevant in that they fell through the cracks because there wasn't a way to check up on them. Had they been in public/private school perhaps this would have been caught early?

Their parents failed them and because there are no real regulations (for whatever reason) to check up on them while homeschooled, they were grossly abused. I don't know the answer, I'm not against homeschooling at all I homeschooled my own kids, one of which went to college. But there does seem to be something missing that allows these types of abuse fall through the cracks.

I took notice yesterday that whenever someone in the public did spot the children outside it was always the children having to do a chore with Mom just standing and watching them like a guard.

Like the kids having to put down sod grass.
That is no small feat as I had to put sod down once. It is back breaking work.

I'm thinking the sod was to cover up some hole-digging, and may well have been punishment.

Otherwise, why would you sod over an unkempt yard? Surely, you'd want to do basic clean up first?

What an odd story. If the abuse only began in texas, I wonder what happened to trigger it? I know it's hard to understand but can't help wonder why When they were left living alone, why did they not run away?

The consciousness of guilt reason for planting the sod is that they didn't want to draw attention to themselves and their "home." There had been a recent crack down in their neighborhood of folks who didn't tend to their lawns.

Or just have them come into the closest public school for the same health screenings that other kids have. Also come in for the regular educational tests other kids take to make sure they're learning adequately for their grade level. Even a couple of visits to the local school every year will allow education professionals to see how well they're doing.

I homeschooled my oldest for his last semester of high school. It was supplemental work in addition to him attending classes for some additional college prep. I had to submit to the school the link, name etc. of the online course he took so they could check the program, curriculum, etc. to make sure it was up to par. I assumed all home school parents were having to coordinate with local school districts to do this until I read some recent news articles. It's pretty shocking that school districts aren't approving home school curriculum. That should be a necessity. How else will kids be able to have certified education certificates and diplomas? How will they get jobs or go to school if there's no certification that they've passed educational competency exams?
