We homeschool and have for years. I am also a former teacher. We are part of a very large homeschool community (not religiously affiliated). The ‘specialists’ aren’t being accurate. What they described is not true of 99% of the families I know that homeschool. Most homeschool so that the children aren’t in a ridged/controlled environment. I am not sure where they found those ‘specialists’ but I have never heard of them and we are very involved in curriculum conventions and our state organization. That may be their opinion but it isn’t a true depiction of the majority of homeschool families that I have met in the past decade.

We have been asked not to engage in discussions about homeschooling pros and cons.

Regarding the Turpins specifically and homeschooling, they were patently not involved in any community of homeschoolers, activities, outings, specialized curricula.

How long would anyone think it would take a Dr. to determine if any one of those girls had given birth?

  • #403
Life has distracted me from Websleuths for a while, so please forgive me if what I am asking for has already been posted multiple times.

Is there a link to a transcript to the most recent LE presser?

Thanks.

I would assume the first step would be to ask. Gently.

Regarding the count of a lewd act towards a minor committed by DT - I’m sure more sexual abuses will come to light in time. The one charge was on the same 17 year old who escaped —and, going by the escape, she is probably particularly brave and strong willed. The others might not be ready to disclose any type of sexual abuse, or may have repressed it, or be in denial.

I remember that. I thought she may have an intellectual disability when I saw it. Or serious speech defect. Now I guess we know why. Some of these kids fared worse than others.

Maybe she was beaten on the ears and lost her hearing. This would impact her speech.

"Lewd act" is so broad as to be meaningless. I would suggest you not let your imagination run away with those thoughts, because there's no way to know what that charge refers to until we have more information.

I don't understand the talk about v-necks vs. other necks. What are you guys referring to?

Please ignore this post. lol messed up a reply.

The mild intellectual disability is speculation, but something that I have wondered about from the beginning, due to her childlike affect in the Vegas Videos and her regression in general. (But that could be trauma) Obsession with Disney, maybe loving her children only when they are little and like "dolls". Her inappropriate affect in court.

I agree with you on the NPD, and that BPD is not limited to raging. But raging and non suicidal self harm are hallmarks of BPD.

As far as her challenging boundaries etc. in childhood. We don't know much about her childhood home and family dynamics to come to the conclusion that her challenging of boundaries was somehow out of the norm for adolescence. It is normal for that age group to challenge their parents and to seek independence. Also, what you and I may see as normal boundary setting , may have been extreme in her family home. And I think it was. I think her father was an Evangelical preacher. Patriarchal themes toward women and girls would have been way above the norm. Demanding submissiveness and modesty. So her normal rebelliousness would have been seen as absolutely pathological when it wasn't. It was possibly normal in a more extreme household with particular religious and patriarchal themes.

Her mother supported her relationship with an adult male because behind her father's back. (She didn't protect LT from that and did not provide adequate supervision, so there are actually poor boundaries from Mom in that particular scenario). Dad found out and was FURIOUS and responded by telling LT, a child "You made your choice, don't come back". This is an extreme and inappropriate reaction from a parent. Inadequate supervision of a minor, again. Her parents ultimately divorced due this scenario. Mom defied Dad. Apparently a 'No No".

She may be borderline, but I just don't get those vibes first and foremost. I really don't. But it very well may be.

I am sorry to hear about your family member. The one thing about BPD, loved ones will often describe it as "Feeling like they are walking on eggshells" constantly as to not trigger an episode of rage. It is awful. Another way to describe interacting with a BPD person is they act like " A toddler with fangs" but they are actually a grown adult.

Challenging of boundaries is totally normal in adolescence. The primary caregivers and parents reaction to it and boundary setting is what matters. LT's mother appeared to have NO boundaries, supporting an inappropriate relationship with a grown man when she was 16 in secret from her husband and LT's father. LT's father had a very extreme "spare the rod" reaction to it (after DT took LT across state lines and the police were involved) and effectively abandoned his minor child. We can see totally inappropriate parenting in this one incident that we "know" of.

I still get the initial impressions that I mentioned earlier. They could be wrong. I've never met her and we all know so little.

Thanks for sharing.

ALL MOO

I could see where the ID could come from. I kind of originally thought along those lines too but I know plenty of sane adults who are total and complete Disney fanatics, lol , so I don't think that counts. Obviously inappropriate affect goes along with any serious psych dX And omg I love the toddler with fangs bit about BPD. That's about right. Thank god I don't have to ever deal with her. She apparently in a calm phase right now. maybe she finally started taking some medication.

Just for the sake of a good convo here and to check my own memory (I'm not a practicing therapist at the moment so things a little rusty) I busted out my good ole 4th ed. DSM and reviewed criteria for both BPD and NPD, and I'm leaning more NPD now but my gut still says that her keeping the kids prisoner has to do with perceived abandonment. Wouldn't be a shocker to have A dose of BPD on the side. I feel
Like this could also account for the preference of the younger kids. As kids age they grow up and move out. It may not be so much that she doesn't only like the kids when they are little, but that she receives more personal validation as a mother from the younger ones...again, because the older they get the less she is needed (goes along with NPD need for admiration or recognition).
And thanks for the more detailed explanation of Louises family situation. Definitely some messed up stuff no matter how you slice it. I had only read about the dad being a pastor and being so angry he made her get married. Hadn't heard rhe bit about the mother. The father abandonment at her age would have left its mark and I'm sure there would have been more than a few instances in which he instituted the spare the rod policy. All very very interesting.

The Chamber of Commerce was asking for donations. They provided a list of items needed. Among the items were tops but specifically said NO v-necks.

The middle boy breaks my heart the most of all. I don't know why.

OT: I went to public school with a girl who became a good friend who had 11 sisters and 2 brothers. I loved hanging out at their house. They were so... different and amazing. They all had names like faith hope charity patience etc and wore clothes from a bygone era. Their brothers were very special to all those sisters.

The middle Turpin brother looks so forlorn. I hope he gets good vision care from here on out. Being able to see well is very important to... connecting with the world around you.
maybe he's wearing the same pants as two years earlier and he's outgrown them? He looks like a clown.

"Toddler with Fangs" is the best description of it ever isn't it? I see the possible high range ID in her affect in photos and especially her behavior in the Vegas Videos. But again, pure vibe and speculation. May not be true. The inappropriate affect may be more along the lines of untreated serious mental illness as you say. For sure. Something is not right. And our tiny peek into her childhood family dynamics are very telling. All I know is that I am not buying the narrative that she was some sort of "mastermind" and he was the deferential follower AT ALL. It was both of them. Likely a toxic storm . But DT is not just deferentially complicit IMO.

No way.

She is absolutely stuck in a childhood fantasy. With her, this has reputation compulsion all over the place. Intergenerational abuse and trauma is my best guess at this point. Not excusing anything, just trying to understand the incomprehensible in some way shape or form.

Yeah. More like maybe one of the daughters sewed the dresses.
Is it possible the dresses were rentals from the Elvis wedding chapel?

I don’t have the document open so I can’t say specifically but if I remember right, the charge says something along the lines of the act was forced, done under duress, or malice, to gratify him sexually. Sure it’s broad and vague but it doesn’t sound like he happened to be doing something to himself in her presence. I think more will be coming to light.

It's been a week today. I would imagine that the first few days after their rescue were devoted to medical exams and tests. When the doctors determined that law enforcement could begin more in depth interviews with the victims, I would think that the investigators would proceed carefully. I would think they'd want to interview the older children first, as the older ones are probably more knowledgeable on the timeline of events. If anything happened, like the disappearance of a sibling, they are going to know it. If something like that had happened, they may not share it with someone outside the family until they're comfortable and feel they can trust that outsider. So, maybe law enforcement has learned more in the past few days.

I was thinking the other day, these kids have never had interactions with people other than their parents and siblings.

They must have been taught to be very distrustful of outsiders, plus the home atmosphere of being completely dominated and controlled by their parents.

So I really wonder whether they're able to have honest heart to heart talks with psychologists, police etc. about their own experiences. I wonder if they could possibly be able to explain things in an objective way, I'd expect they'll be very troubled by feelings of confusion, distrust, anxiety, guilt, self-doubt, etc.

Does anyone know why the lewd and lascivious charge is for a one year period (11/16/2012 thru 11/15/2013) while the other charges are for 1/1/2010 - 1/14/2018?

Reading that count makes me angry. moo

Specialist psych personnel are experienced in dealing with severely abused children.
