16-year-old father arrested in beating death of toddler son

Pasadena police arrested a 16-year-old father on suspicion of beating his toddler son to death.

The incident happened on Feb. 4. Police were called to the 1600 block of Kenneth Way in the morning on a report of an infant child, just under 2 years old, not breathing.

Detectives continued to investigate for months. This week, they say, the 16-year-old father admitted hitting the child with his fist several times.

Police said the case against the father was presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office for review Thursday and that thereafter, the District Attorney filed one count of homicide (CA Penal Code 187(a)) and one count of assault resulting in death of child under eight years of age (CA Penal Code 273ab) against the suspect.

The suspect is held without bail.

A Daddy at the age of 14..... sigh. Who was the primary caretaker for the now deceased child? Surely there were adults. 16, and killing a toddler. No even an accidental death of making a bad decision...but a deliberate act of hitting a toddler with fists.

A relative found the child, Brandon Blackburn, not breathing around 8:30 a.m. on Feb. 4 in the 1600 block of Kenneth Way. Paramedics pronounced the toddler dead.

Carrillo said the boy was at his paternal grandmother’s home that Sunday morning. He said there were several people at the house at the time including the child’s teen parents.

He said the child didn’t have any medical issues. Detectives waited for the coroner to determine how the toddler died. The autopsy showed Brandon Blackburn died of blunt force trauma to his abdomen, according to Carrillo.
