2 suspects arrested in 7-Eleven Southern California robbery spree which left 2 dead, 3 wounded

Two suspects have been arrested in connection with a violent robbery spree earlier this week at several 7-Eleven stores in Southern California in which two people were killed and three others wounded.

The Orange County District Attorney's Office announced one arrest Friday afternoon, according to CBS Los Angeles. The Brea Police Department later announced a second arrest.

In a news briefing Friday evening, Santa Ana Police Chief David Valentin identified the two suspects as 20-year-old Malike Patt and 44-year-old Jason Payne, both of Los Angeles. Patt is believed to be the primary suspect responsible for the robberies, Valentin said. Payne's role in the crimes is unclear.

Brea 7-Eleven clerk killed by gunman helped people down on their luck

Matt Hirsch was killed early Monday when a gunman burst into his store at Brea Boulevard and Lambert Road and shot him.

"Matt Hirsch was killed early Monday when a gunman burst into his store at Brea Boulevard and Lambert Road and shot him. That was just one stop during what appears to have been a string of attempted robberies, at possibly as many as six 7-Eleven locations from Riverside to La Habra, over several hours.

At first glance, Matt Hirsch might have struck an imposing figure: Tattoos on his face and neck, his features worn by years of drug addiction, standing behind the counter of the 7-Eleven in Brea in the middle of the night.

Anyone who struck up a conversation with him, however, would have quickly found out how much Hirsch, 40, loved talking to people and learning about their problems.

Kristen Ewan was Hirsch’s girlfriend. She described him as an “empath” who genuinely cared for the customers who came in during the late shift. At that hour, many of those customers were homeless."
