No looters yet?

I dont think there will be any looters in Napa. Pretty civilized place. People will meditate and go door to door to offer aid, most likely.

It will be more than a blip on the news today, but in the scheme of things, a six isn't that big. What influences the size of the story is how populated the area is.

Humboldt County earthquakes can be quite large, but they are seldom more than a blip on the news.

That was a lame joke from me when I saw all those wine bottles.......didn't mean to demean, sorry.

I'm in SoCal visiting family before school starts. My thoughts and prayers are with those who are affected. :(

The live feed has been running all morning via NBCLA on Channel 4.

:praying:

Um, wrong 6.0 is fairly sizeable, a major quake. Now if you'd said 4.0, that'd be different. I've been in more than one big quake in my life. They go up exponentially in size. This one was actually upgraded to 6.1.
And if you don't believe me: "A quake of that size in a populated area is of course widely felt throughout that region," said Randy Baldwin, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Golden, Colorado. "The 6.0 is a sizeable quake for this area. It's a shallow quake. It's about 6 miles deep. We received hundreds of reports on our website from people that felt it in the surrounding area." http://www.ktvu.com/news/news/local/early-morning-earthquake-rocks-wine-country/ng75k/
The quake jolted downtown Napa resident Karen Lynch. "The refrigerator flew open and all the food fell out," she told CNN.
"It was not like other quakes we have felt," Lynch said. "This was a violent quake, jolting us to and fro." http://www.cnn.com/2014/08/24/us/california-earthquake/

Sylmar was 6.6, Loma Prieta was 6.9., Whittier was 5.1. I wasn't there for the Northridge quake, but it was 6.7. You get above 5.0 and you should be concerned.

Help! Mods! (hollers this).....we need to combine the Yoda and LinasK earthquake threads here! Just sayin'.

Glad you are safe Linask! Earthquakes scare me more than hurricanes or tornadoes. At least you have warning with hurricanes and tornadoes and can take action to protect yourself and family...earthquakes are just BOOM!

We do take protective action ShowMe. Besides running for cover (I was taught doorjambs growing up- now they say get under desks), we strap down large furniture and water heaters, no glass on shelves unless it's cemented down, try to keep bottled water on hand...

It was a significant earthquake. I woke up out of a dead sleep. Felt like the roof of my house was being rolled back. It felt rolling like to me, not like the 1989 earthquake which I experienced as a 'sound', a huge jolt and building moving side to side and gaining momentum. Where I live, this quake didn't seem nearly as long as the 1989 quake. But I was closer to that epicenter so maybe that makes a difference. Had to turn on TV after I felt this one to see if we had just had a quake or was I dreaming.

NBCBayArea has been talking about it all day. 6.0 is TEN times larger than a 5.0. Also the nature of the geology in the area of the epicenter impacts the overall impact of the quake. When 'fill', soft mud, and 'sedimentary soil' are involved, it can increase damage. Also this was not on the San Andreas fault and yet it was felt throughout a similar area.
