CA - 6.0 earthquake American Canyon

People who went through the Northridge earthquake are telling me not to get under a doorjamb- even though that's what I was taught growing up. They say that doorjambs can still break apart. They are supposed to be the strongest part of a building. So now they advise you to get under a desk or table. You don't want to run outside, buildings can collapse. If I was in a meadow or open field, I'd be laying on the ground.
DH doesn't think the drought had any effect, but I do believe in the phenomenon of "Earthquake weather". They tend to occur when it's hot and dry out.

The Show Mythbusters did one of their tests on this. They found that the door jamb WAS the safest place to be during a big earthquake. It was interesting to watch. All other parts of the house started collapsing and "killing" the dummys... all but the dummy in the door way, he wasn't hit at all.

I live about 50 miles from Napa. I was awake and at my laptop when I was rocked in my chair. First thought was my dog knock into my chair. I looked around... and no dog. Second thougt: EARTHQUAKE!

CNN had quite a bit of coverage earlier in the day.

I think some of the local TV stations might be streaming their coverage. The main stations are KGO, KTVU, KPIX and NBCBayArea.com (which covered it for hours today and now has the football game). There is also a Sacramento TV station whose name I can't remember which might be streaming it.

Yeah, but it took 'em awhile to get started. They weren't right on it when it happened.

There's nothing more frightening than an earthquake IMO....went through one in Southern Cali back in the early '70's, I actually slept through it-I was only 18 yers old and from Texas. I worked at the telephone company at the time-their phone call woke me me up asking me to report ASAP. When I got to work-I experienced an aftershock-the most scared I have been in my life-the ground under my feet was actually moving-I froze in terror-you can't think or hardly move. My Cajun roommate from Louisiana got so scared she moved back home for a few weeks-but then she moved back. I had never met her or anyone from Lousiana but we really bonded over that experience.

Here's the latest from USGS:

You might've worked with my sister. She was a telephone operator back then too. It was 1971- Sylmar quake. I lived fairly close to the epicenter.

A lot of old historical buildings, sadly, that can't be rebuilt as they were. Thankfully no one killed but so many still without power and I'd imagine very uncomfortable in the hot weather.

Prayers for everyone in the area.
:(

I just discovered I got 3 floors resting on a couple of bricks and a couple of inches of inches of wood, during my renovation work. My construction workers tell me it'll be no problem, so if you guys need any help, I have the contacts.....

PS: I knew I felt tilted, as I walked around the house, but thought it was just me. The house had dropped 8 inches on one side though. :(

ETA: Not in Napa! No earthquakes here! It's just age.
