The article says she traveled to San Diego alone, and was spotted leaving the hotel at 4:30 am on hotel surveillance. She may have decided to walk farther than just the sunset cliffs as shown below. Did they even do an arial search of the cliffs up and down the coast for 1/4 mile each way to at least look for her? From Google Earth, there are many accessible, albeit dangerous viewpoints and cars parked everywhere.

Thanks for the map! Totally puts things into perspective for me. When it says "beach access" does that mean that's where you enter?
Lifetime Chicagoan, I've only been to the beach a dozen times in my 35 years lol

Mandy's brother mentioned that the only thing missing was her digital camera, which has likely gone with her. Mandy is a super sweet gal, who is immensely valuable to her community of people. She traveled alone often and more than likely found the cliffs to be gorgeous, as most tourists do. No matter the time of day. I am suspecting a fall from the edge. I hope they find her soon.

Thinking of Amanda, I hope she'll be located soon.

The stairs to the beach appear to be the only designated access. There might be other, more dangerous options, but I couldn't tell from Google Earth.

BTW, I was outside running that morning from 5AM to 7AM. I was about 30 miles NE of Sunset Cliffs in the Rancho Bernardo/Poway region. It was actually sprinkling (with a brief heavier rain) for most of that time. Again, not a great morning to be outside with a camera.

I just googled her case again and found the following article from a community paper.
http://obrag.org/?p=117970
This states that the street listed in the San Diego Union-Trib article is wrong -- should be Monaco Street near Sunset Cliffs Blvd. They also point out that the "Missing" poster now says that she went missing between 4:30 PM and 5:30 PM on SATURDAY (rather than 4:30 AM and 5:30 AM on SUNDAY). Very interesting.

Very interesting! I wonder where she was all day before heading to take photos then.

Okay, either there's a major typo from AM to PM, or someone is changing the story.

The hotel reported a very specific timeframe that she was seen on video:
At her hotel in Point Loma, there is surveillance footage showing her leaving about 4:30 a.m. Sunday.

Is it time to start looking at others in her life who knew where she was?

Maybe the hotel reviewed the footage and realized it was actually 4:30 PM Saturday rather than 4:30 AM Sunday when she was seen? Very odd!

Another possibility is that it is an old poster put up before the surveillance camera information was known. I wish the family had a website or something. I am guessing that they are assuming she fell off the cliff and therefore there is no real point in doing a lot of publicity and posters.

In the original article, the family was quoted as suggesting Mandy went to photograph the sunrise. Why would they say that if she was missing the night before?

  • #32
That local paper also captioned the picture incorrectly "Cruz" versus "Cruse" in italics...so perhaps an error in reporting AM/PM is entirely possible?

  • #33
The paper merely says that they have noticed that the posted "Missing" signs that they saw posted (and took a photo of) say that she has been missing since "4:30 to 5:30 PM Saturday February 18". It sounds like they did not contact the police to verify if any information has changed. The author of the OB Rag is just speculating that maybe the San Diego Union-Tribune had the wrong information. We don't know if the person who first read the surveillance camera footage assumed the wrong time, or whether someone initially made a mistake when communicating the information to the media, or whether that sign is older and was printed prior to the information about the surveillance footage..

It's a 12 hour variance. It could matter. I mean, if she wasn't there the night before, could she have been abducted? Not as likely at 5:00 am.

Hi everyone, I am new to this site but, I am a friend of the mother of the missing girl and came across this thread while helping her mother do some research.

Here is what the mother knows so far:

Saturday: She left her hotel in the morning and went to the cliffs to take sunset pictures and texted her friend at 4:30 p.m. that she had arrived there. She took her phone with her because there are 6 pictures on it from this day facing North that she took from the cliffs. A woman came forward that had spoken to her telling her with the rains and water it is dangerous because there is a cave sink hole. Hotel footage shows her coming back at 8:00 p.m. Saturday night with take out and not leaving again.

Sunday morning: She left her hotel on Rosencrans Drive at 4:29 a.m. She parked the intersection of Monaco and Sunset Cliffs Blvd. and thanks to video footage from a house facing Monaco she was seen at 5:05 a.m. going to her trunk and left with only her keys and her camera.

Sunday afternoon: They were able to track her cell phone via I Phone App to her car. The car was locked and everything was still inside including her bag with her jacket covering it, water bottle and her cell phone.

She was used to traveling on her own and her mother always knew her to be safe and with her cell phone. The police figure that she slipped and fell as you all know.

If figure it can't hurt to relay the message on here of the few facts that are known and if y'all have any insight I am sure her mother would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

Thank you so very much for the details you provided. Do you know if they have done searches below for her or her camera? I'm so sorry that her family is going through this.

Wow, had really thought there would be some news after the weekend. Amanda sounds like a confident woman who travels alone with regularity. This can't be good... so very sad for all those who know and love her. Not knowing must be simply awful...

For clarity - My original point was that it took 4 days for a local paper (I am in Arizona, Amanda is from Arizona) to pick up this story local as in here, in Scottsdale, not SD.

I haven't spoken to the police directly so I don't have information on that but, I sent her a message to ask and will let you know as soon as she lets me know. Her mother is really getting the impression that the police are sort of shrugging it off and treating it like an accidental death off the bat. Although I also take into account that my friend is very upset and I know police work does take a while.

UPDATE: Her mother says there were divers yesterday but, they didn't find anything. They said there was very bad high tides yesterday and sometimes the waves can go 60 ft and people get washed away with the wave. Since she is light that could happen but, if she had her camera around her neck it would be on her but, can get stuck in a rock and that's what they are looking for.

Her mother is holding out hope of finding her alive.

She was a very confident, smart, seasoned and aware traveler. I think that is what is frustrating her friends and family at this point and causing everyone to try and help search for answers is it just seems to not be getting to news outlets. Her mother is trying to get her picture and story on the LA News stations but, she is not having much luck.

Mela, I'm so sorry your friend and her family are going through this.

You mentioned earlier that a home saw her getting into her trunk. Which direction did she head once leaving the car?

What kind of camera does she have? Was the case in the car, or did she take it all?

What kind of car key did she have? A key fob with push button entry and a panic button?

Did she have a keychain?

Pictures of any of these items will be helpful. Sometimes people randomly find things, but they wouldn't know to turn something in if they didn't know it belonged to a missing person. I would put images of these items on missing person posters along with her picture and a description of what she was seem wearing in the 5 am video.

Thinking of you.
