Hey guys, just joined this forum out of interest for the case.
Would photos of the area be helpful to you guys? I live in San Diego and own a very powerful telephoto lens that might be of use here.

Sorry in advance for the length:
I listen to the scanner in the overnight hours regularly here and have for years so this is based upon that.
It'd be quite unlikely, IMO, that something random happened to her.
Assuming that she didn't plan to meet someone in the area, or didn't spontaneously do so due to the bad weather, and that somehow that's just not been discovered thus far (unlikely, by now, IMO - especially since there's been a lot more media attention to this case recently) here are my thoughts largely based on these years of scanner listening:
You do hear a lot of calls of drunks getting themselves into trouble at that hour in the general area b/c they've wandered from or around OB/PB (primarily) or woke up after a drunken respite somewhere and are trying to find their hotel or residence and are totally disoriented and kept walking or whatever and end up inadvertently at the wrong neighborhood, street, or sometimes just door, etc. If you were to listen, those to the scanner overnight, those tend to be called in as some variation of possible 459 (burglary), 594 (vandalism), or 11-7 (prowler) calls - though they rarely pan out as anything valid and like I said, almost always end up being drunken individuals (not always, but nearly always!)
But that or noise disturbance (usually transients out looking for cans/recyclables) are the vast majority of the scanner stuff you hear from about 3-5 am, especially in that part of town.
While yes, it's possible you might periodically have something else happen anywhere, it's not overly common.
As far as anything involving any homeless or transients...
The beach areas around there as a whole do tend to be a place that you'll find more congregating during much of the year, though it's not as true during the rainy season since more will head toward areas with more coverage to help stay warmer and dry and/or with shelters.
And in the broader Pt Loma-ish area, areas around Robb Field, for instance, are much, much more of a gathering/sleeping place than further down where Amanda was known to have been over by Sunset Cliffs.
And while obviously there are always exception, IMO and from all my listening, odds are much (much) higher that the risk would be crimes toward them (granted often by others, though not always) than crimes they're committing against a random citizen.
Meaning, while it's obviously not out of the question - as with so little known for certain, nothing really is - I'd say this isn't an overly probable scenario.
In addition, following the horrible spate of attacks that had been happening here, especially for a prolonged period of time, in the wee hours to transients, far more sleep and/or congregate in groups for their own safety over night, and there are fewer 'lone rangers' than there used to be, and many are a whole lot quicker to intervene (and report) if they see something happening to anyone - as are citizens in residences who might hear something possibly happening to someone outside. So again, I think that further decreases the odds / points away from this being a very likely scenario as far as what could have happened to Amanda.
Throw in our weather - in general lately and including during the relevant time of Amanda's disappearance, and that leaves only one other real thing I'd put out for consideration.
We're overall quite wimpy here and the biggest danger with all our rain is on the roads out driving and getting into a wreck, whether by your own doing or at the fault of someone else.
She'd obviously made it there in her car, and as the car is there, unless she left with someone else, anything vehicular wise - including if she'd been hit by a car or something on foot - is seemingly off the table, as even if she'd been hit anywhere, we'd have heard of a Jane Doe in hospital long before now.

Where do I think that leaves us based on my extensive scanner listening in the area?
Assuming she didn't: meet someone (planned in advance or spontaneously while there) and it's just not been something anyone has learned about, leave intentionally and manage to do so undetected and so is missing of her own volition, or commit suicide...
Odds of anything other than some sort of slip and fall accident (or suicide) being the cause - especially given the weather - are very low.
I really, really believe, unfortunately, that the most likely probability and that the one that LE believes is most likely, is that she was swept into or fell into the water.
As I posted just one recent instance of, though they are a truly a regular occurrence, especially in the Sunset Cliffs area, people falling in / being swept away / having cliff crumble happens shockingly frequently.
It's a well known danger, there are signs regarding that danger and warnings to stay back from the cliffs, yet it's a very frequent - albeit nearly always incredibly avoidable - problem.
There have been a lot of recent rescues. Far more than usual this time of year.
But the particularly rough and higher surf attracts some to gawk, people take unnecessary risk to think the signs and warnings don't apply to them and try to go down to 'see it up close' or photograph and get themselves in trouble, there's greater erosion leading to further cliff instability than already exists (a huge part of the reason for the year-round warnings there). The big waves just make the danger of getting swept away in general far greater, and of course slicker surfaces than there already are (from sand on the cliffs) due to the rain make even just slipping on any surface far higher than usual.
Unfortunately, especially at that time of morning, few people are out in general, but especially with the poor weather we'd had when she was last seen, not only are the some form of accident/slipping higher than usual, but there were far lower odds of there being anyone around who may have seen or heard anything.
And with the largely persistent inclement weather we've had, it'd only mean it's likely to take longer for her - or any evidence of things she might have had on her person - to be found.
I actually hadn't been that close to the shore until just early last week prior to our last big storm.
While I knew - as is always the case following rain / storms here - there were a lot of warnings about staying out of the water because of all the 'ick' stirred up (some coming up from Tijuana, some from the San Diego River, and some just plain old extra sand/silt/etc from the rough surf) it was far, far worse out there than I recall ever seeing in my many decades of living here.
And I was a number of miles up the coast from the Sunset Cliffs area - meaning much further from the areas that were even anywhere near being the worst.
The water was a brown sludgy mess. It was almost unreal looking!
And literally 24 hours after I saw it that bad, we were hit really hard making it even worse!
So even if the possibility of her body (assuming she unfortunately may have ended up in the water somehow) were to be swept back in by now - or soon - that significantly decreased visibility, especially since we're hardly getting long enough breaks between storms for things to ever truly normalize again, is going to really hamper the search - or just a citizen randomly spotting - any possible evidence anytime real soon I'm afraid.
That said, the volume increase in early (for this time of year) season rescues because of these storms and rain is helpful in the search for Amanda because unfortunately SDFD / Lifeguards are having to be accessing the cliffs and water not just in Sunset Cliffs, but up and down the coast.
That happening more often and sooner rather than later for us, means far more 'hands on deck' in areas the general public largely can't access (and therefore can't really search) which is favorable as far as Amanda or possible evidence of her possibly being found while they're actually doing all these rescues for victims seen ending up in the water.
And the number will only be going up as we're quickly approaching the lengthy rash of increased crowds thanks to Spring Break, meaning also sn even typically higher percentage of drunks than we already have in the area season. That'll then be followed shortly just a few weeks after that ends, by the start of warmer weather, Memorial Day, and the beginning of 'summer' (aka basically end of May on) crowds.
Those all mean rescues at Sunset Cliffs and nearby areas will almost certainly increase even further in just a matter of weeks, again helping by inadvertently having more hands/eyes of SDFD and Lifeguards ending up in those hard (or otherwise impossible) to access areas.
But as has been pointed out previously, it's also just a tough area in general because in Sunset Cliffs in particular, there are so many 'nooks and cranies' basically, meaning so many possibilities of where searchers/rescuers would have to eventually 'stumble' on in terms of possible places someone/something evidence wise may end up even if she might not have been swept further out and thus possibly putting an even greater stretch of coastline 'into play.'

Unfortuantely it's definitely one of the things that make that area that's already quite a challenge as it is, even more of a challenge (and danger)
I just addressed that, in part, in the second of my two really lengthy posts I just made (kinda rolled it into another post - ironically actually another earlier one of yours I'm almost sure!) so I'll not expand further here (hadn't read down to see this prior to writing those!)

The thing I'm most encouraged by is that there's been more coverage of this in the MSM than there had been earlier, so in general there is greater public awareness meaning more eyes out for her and ups the possibility that if anyone saw anything remotely helpful, they may now realize it could be related and might come forward now that they know she's missing.

"Saddened and heartbroken, but with a silent sigh of relief to have closure, I am sorry to report that Mandys body washed up on Mission Beach on Sunday March 5th, two weeks to the day she went missing. Her remains have been positively identified.
On Saturday night and early Sunday morning of the 4th and 5th, I traced her steps in San Diego, by doing everything she did at the same times. As I got out of the car at 5:04am Sunday morning in the spot she had parked, and walked her last steps to the cliffs, I took in everything she would have seen and the last sound she would have heard the powerful yet beautiful sound of the ocean. Due to the bad storm that weekend and the bad conditions of the cliffs that morning, I believe she accidentally slipped in. We are told this happens 3-4 times a year in that area. There is no trauma to the body or indication of foul play. She left in pure Mandy style... all her belongings neatly placed with everything intact. Over the weekend, I felt she was on my trail while I was on her trail, and she waited until I saw it all myself, before coming ashore later that same day.
Many do not know that Mandy was an aspiring screen writer and director. She has inadvertently created her very own masterpiece, while starring in it herself, in her behind-the-scenes Mandy kind of way. Her adventurous yet minimalist approach to life was inspiring. Her sweet, kind, humorous, and quirky soul was refreshing. With a smirk in her honor, through this experience, I salute her ability to have lived up to one of her favorite movies and taglines, by becoming Almost Famous. A few of the news articles instruct people to call SD Homicide if they have any information. Just curious as to why if they suspect no foul play would they ask people to call homicide ? Is that just standard procedure?
She was such a hard working, fun, sweet girl. Missing her every second of every day.

I am truly sorry for your loss. She looked like she had such a spirit to her... one that pulled people in.
I don't quite understand why LE would instruct people to call homicide. Has anyone in the family made contact with homicide to ask why? I can only imagine they are overwhelmed with grief and perhaps not on their minds at this point.
It could be "bad" reporting in general and homicide dept. has nothing to do with it as I read no foul play... case closed scenario. I would check . Please let us know...
