Thanks to all of the posts by Unalienable Rights, I've taken notice of all the missing teens out of Bakersfield, and have been really bothered by it. I'm glad to have found that I'm not the only one shocked by the volume.

Before I found this thread, I wasn't sure if this was actually out of the ordinary or if there was some sort of bias in play as to what I'm seeing and noticing. I'm still not sure how much of this is from BPD's policy to report all first-time missing children (ie. including those believed or known to have run away) as at-risk--I don't know if that is normal for a law enforcement agency, especially with teenagers. But as I said, I was bothered, so I started gathering the basics on all of the teens reported missing out of Bakersfield since the start of 2023. I honestly thought I might be able to share it in the table function here, but it is ~121 children 9-19. This is from Websleuths, MSM, the CA AG, NamUs, and NCMEC.

Just in 2024 it is 30 children.

I threw together a chart on how many children were reported missing in the last 7 days (and the last 14 days) just to see if anything stood out, and there was a visible increase in the end of February 2024. Not sure what to make of it.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — With the recent disappearance of an 11-year-old Bakersfield girl found in Utah, Kern County Sheriff’s deputies found she had an online relationship with a 29-year-old man accused of taking her.

This is becoming a trend in Kern County, according to Sheriff Donny Youngblood.

“Without fail, we get people that come here from across the country thinking they are going to meet a juvenile for sex when, in fact, they are meeting a police officer,” said Youngblood.

This case is one of more than 40 missing children reports 17 News has received since January from Kern County law enforcement.

I suspect this is not the only city having such problems. Maybe Bakersfield is doing a better job at listing every case and quickly in NamUs whereas other cities are not acting as quickly? JMO.

Bakersfield rarely lists in NamUs or in NCMEC, they usually don't even list with the CA Attorney General's missing person archive.

Sorry if I assumed incorrectly about that. I thought I recalled seeing numerous cases in NamUs. I wish there was a law requiring every reported missing person's case be added, so that trends would be easy to track, and no case falls between the cracks.

In the FAQ for NamUs, it says:
At present, sixteen states have passed legislation mandating the use of NamUs for missing and/or unidentified persons cases. Those states are:

  • Arizona
  • Arkansas
  • California
  • Connecticut
  • Florida
  • Illinois
  • Michigan
  • New Mexico
  • New York
  • North Carolina
  • Oklahoma
  • Pennsylvania
  • Tennessee
  • Texas
  • Washington
  • West Virginia
I can’t find the law for California, but I believe the discrepancy is in part because LE is only required to enter people who have been missing for upwards of 30 days.

This is becoming a trend in Kern County, according to Sheriff Donny Youngblood.

“Without fail, we get people that come here from across the country thinking they are going to meet a juvenile for sex when, in fact, they are meeting a police officer,” said Youngblood.
(Snipped)
This is a weird thing to say, and I wish the article included more on this. In the referenced case, a person came across the country to meet a juvenile for sex and did not meet a police officer, they abducted the juvenile.

Is the Kern County Sheriff running regular stings and they just aren’t talking about them? Do they have a program where juveniles report when an adult is coming to meet up with them and that also isn’t being talked about?

As many may have noticed, the number of reported missing teens is alarming here in the county, so we took a closer look at just how alarming.

Data compiled by the California Department of Justice revealed in 2023, Kern County had the fifth-most reports of missing children in the state.

*****
Then at Fifth Kern County, with 4,245 reports of missing children.

Dr. Doug Bennett founder of Magdalene Hope told us the top areas mentioned are all hot spots for human trafficking.

Out of those reported missing, only 2,935 children returned.

*****
This echoes a message the Kern County Sheriff’s Office once told Eyewitness News. One of the reasons for the missing teens is not abductions, but rather teens going on social media and meeting new people.

*****
Ofelia Flores a survivor advocate told us that geographically, teens in Kern County are at an outstanding risk when they’re missing.

Her reason is that Kern County is an "unfortunate perfectly hub" between Las Vegas, Sacramento, and Los Angeles.

edit: there we go formatting. following, haven't seen this before.

I saw in this thread that someone wondered if this was going on in other places but Bakersfield was just better at reporting it. Yes…. It does happen everywhere.

I posted the links just to show what I’m talking about. I’m sure most of you already know. I read an article a few years ago ( that I unfortunately can’t find) about how the system is so broken that sometimes they forget to remove the kids that are found so the numbers appear worse than they actually are.
What I worry about is the vast wilderness not far from Bakersfield and how it would be a good dumping ground. Worst case scenario, of course.

I've kept up my own spreadsheet to try and track things, and occasionally done some light social media sleuthing to see if any of the kids have resurfaced. Part of the problem with the information we see is that for Bakersfield, most of the info comes from the media. Sometimes they update if a child (particularly non-teenagers) has been located, but mostly they don't.

According to NamUs, California is one of the states that requires the use of NamUs for missing persons, and LE agencies are also required to add missing persons to a Missing Persons System. I imagine for NamUs at least, there is some sort of time window--eg. they don't need to add the person for 30 days, so some people never get added because they are no longer missing. I'm sure it's the case, but it's really horrible to think that there are non-missing kids who are still listed as missing. That means that no one has been paying close enough attention to those listings to correct it. While we have bad data (because it comes from media reports), LE definitely shouldn't.

I don't want to sound like an LE downer because that's not what I mean here, but I don't think those big child-finding operations are really notable or impressive. I'm happy they're doing them and I'm glad the children are found, but being able to find 200 kids in 6 weeks means those kids were findable. It's basically what is referred to in some lines of work as a sprint or time box--you're setting aside specific time to dial in on a specific thing. If anything, it says something about the way resources are allocated to missing children cases.

I agree with you. For soooo many years I’ve known that no one cares about women and children when it come to this type of stuff. Especially in this day and age when you are on camera dozens of times in a single day. I can’t believe it’s so hard to identify people simply because of this fact and track their movements. It’s not like the 70s when kids were going missing and no one knew anything because we relied on eye witnesses.
As for bad data…. I think that’s just par for the course. I read a story a while back about a dad and his kid that rented a car at the airport. They drove a couple blocks and were pulled over by the cops. Cops said they were in a stolen car. Long story short, the car was late to be turned back in and was reported stolen. Obviously it was returned but the stolen warrant was still active. So now this poor b@stard and his kid do everything right, but still get pulled over for some sort of paperwork issue. What a way to mess everything up!

feels_close_to_home - could/would you update the map and spreadsheet you created for kids missing in Bakersfield with Dec, Jan, Feb, March, April - it's over 10, probably closer to 15. Ages are ranging from 11-18. I was just about to start one and found your post!
