well, as someone who hiked out in that area looking for her, it was too hot to walk from her last reported sighting to essex. So the "maybe someone took her" theory comes into play. Her son didn't believe that theory per his interview. I hope the detectives have developed evidence over time. I am very sorry for her and her family. God bless you Barbara your life mattered.

Thank you for this great personal info.
Thank you for trying to find her also❤️
I believe from watching hundreds of missing spouse scenarios, most perps don’t get away with it. It may take decades ,but hey the truth prevails.
And those remote area “falls” and “drownings” are always ( to me) very suspect.
Too many (screaming ) dots IMO.
RIP Barb❤️

Always MOO

My question is, if whoever found the remains drove to the Sheriff's department and reported the find in person, would there even be any record in the dispatch logs?

The Sheriff's office for that area is in Needles. I can't imagine why someone would drive all that way to report, and not just call it in.

But anything is possible. If there's another Sheriff's office in that region, I'd be interested to know where it is.

AFAIK, there is neither a Sheriff's substation nor a CHP base in Essex or Ludlow. It is unincorporated (so it's not a city, has no city police). The 89 people mostly live in the desert near the "town." I don't think it even has a post office.

But it is a useful "offramp" out that way, as most of the other named places have even fewer people...

So, Essex is one of those places that might be described as "When you get there, there's no there there" .... ?

Yes, exactly. It does have cell service though! The next nearest town (Ludlow) is maybe a little better, but I've been out there at night hoping to have enough gas to make it to Needles (stupidly not filling up in Barstow) and found absolutely nothing of any kind open in either town. (I made it to Needles).

It's on old Route 66, so people regard its "ruins" as interesting:

I’m wondering why it took three weeks for it to come out in MSM about her remains being found. Could it have taken that long for her to be ID’d? Surely not.
DNA testing can actually take months, depending on the workload for DNA labs. I'd say this was pretty quick.

Perhaps it was dental records?

Heartfelt condolences to you and your family, dbdb11. You have been an outstanding advocate for Barbara and I hope all of your questions will soon be answered.

Barbara was a beautiful soul who captured the hearts of so many of us here and I will never forget her.

I am guessing it was fairly apparent who the victim was, when the remains were found. Dental records would have supplied the needed confirmation.

Oh. I am so sorry, dbdb11.
Rest in peace, beautiful Barbara Thomas. You were loved.

I will remember you, with your bikini and beer, and your lovely smile.
Well done!

Best,
coastal

LE kept this on the down low for a while. Normally a body found makes the news in a day or so.

For those of you curious about the point where the search began (they grid searched for a half a mile in each direction, IIRC, and of course went along the trails - although I don't know how far), here are the coordinates for where she was last seen:

34.794448 -115.615131

As you can see, it was at the intersection of two trails, with 4 ways to go. The dry creek bed is just north of that. This is where WS member @cazador was told by LE that she was last seen.

The trailer was parked at the pull out just east of there...

I am eager to see the coordinates where she was found and if they line up with that trail intersection. I have always thought that is where she would have made the first mistake.
