A Humboldt County sheriff's deputy was responding to an emergency call about an overdose.
On Aug. 3 at around 11 p.m. the patrol car was heading north on Highway 96 with lights and sirens blaring, when a bear suddenly fell from an embankment and landed on the hood. The patrol car then struck an embankment, rolled over and came to rest on its side. The crash then sparked a fire that destroyed the vehicle and ignited nearby vegetation on the embankment, according to the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office.
