Bernstein’s Death Still Resonates a Year Later

"Blaze Bernstein, a student at the University of Pennsylvania, was 19 when he was allegedly murdered by a high school classmate named Samuel Woodward.

Woodward, 21, was later found to be in possession of materials associated with the Atomwaffen Division, a neo-Nazi hate group that encouraged violence against Jews and gay people. Bernstein, who had been out for only a short time, was stabbed multiple times, and buried in a shallow grave in Borrego Park in Los Angeles. His body was uncovered after a massive search.

That was the first week of January 2018. One year later, those who knew Blaze Bernstein are still trying to process what happened, and continue to discover the ways in which he remains present — and absent — in their everyday lives. The trial of Woodward remains pending.

Friday, August 2nd:
*Pretrial Hearing (@ 9am PT) – CA – Blaze Bernstein (19) (Jan. 2, 2018, Lake Forest; found Jan. 9, 2018) – *Samuel Lincoln Woodward (20) arrested & charged (1/17/18) with 1 count of felony murder with a hate crime enhancement for killing someone because of their sexual orientation & sentencing enhancement-personal use of a knife. Plead not guilty (again on 11/9/18). $5M bail, bail revoked (11/9/18). Could be sentenced from 26 years to life in prison without parole.
2/2/18 update: Plead not guilty; Judge set bail at $5M with conditions: GPS surveillance, can't leave State, remains inside house 10:30pm-5am, surrender passport and protective order to stay away from Bernsteins. Postponed from 3/2/18 & 6/14/18.
8/2/18 Update: O.C. District Attorney Tony Rackauckas said during a Thursday press conference that a hate crime allegation has been added against 21-year-old Samuel Woodward, who was charged with murder earlier this year. Adding the hate crime allegation means Woodward, who was already facing 26 years to life in prison, could now face life in prison without the possibility of parole. "We will prove that Woodward killed Blaze because Blaze was gay," Rackauckas said.
8/22/18 Update: Woodward denies hate-crime allegations; prelim hearing postponed to Sept. 4.
9/4/18 Update: An Orange County judge ruled Tuesday that there's enough evidence to try 21-year-old Samuel Woodward of Newport Beach for the January stabbing death of Blaze Bernstein. Next hearing is 9/17.
9/17/18 Update: Bail was set at $5M. Woodward requested a Public Defender. Arraignment hearing was postponed to 11/9.
11/9/18 Update: Again plead not guilty. Judge Kimberly Menninger denied bail, saying she thought Woodward posed a danger to the community after seeing troves of evidence linking Woodward to anti-gay, anti-Semitic messages and propaganda from the neo-Nazi group Atomwaffen Division, which apparently reveled in Bernstein’s brutal murder. Next Pretrial hearing on 1/25/19.
