Other than the person arrested the family is off limits to sleuthing. Please do not sleuth them.

Some new info in an updated Patch article. They have been doing some of the best reporting, imo.

From this UPDATED article:
UPDATED: Arraignment Postponed for SJC Double Homicide Suspect
"We are very confident that we have all the evidence that we need," says Senior Deputy District Attorney Ebrahim Baytieh.

"Orange County Superior Court records pertaining to the couple's divorce in 2000 shed a little light about some of the rancor between the two that also involved their three biological children. Their 8-year-old son and another daughter were adopted later."

"Brad Sachs was arrested by Newport Beach police in March 2000 following a custody exchange of the couple's children M****, Ashton and A*****. M**** was 8 at the time, the defendant was 6, and A***** was 3."

"Andra Sachs requested a restraining order, alleging her then-estranged husband assaulted her as he was picking up the three children for visitation, according to court records. She alleged he opened a car door that slammed into her stomach before his vehicle collided with hers.

As Andra Sachs went to check on the children in her car, she alleged their father "came after me and threw me onto the pavement, where I hit my head and, for a brief moment, blacked out. I received injuries to my head, left thigh, knee and ankle."

"On March 28, 2000, a judge issued an order prohibiting the father's girlfriend from staying over during visitations with the children. ... ."

"There are no other records of discord between the two in the divorce."

DO NOT BRING THE FAMILY INTO THE DISCUSSION OF THIS CRIME. You can discuss the victims and the suspect but that is it.

Not sure if this is a new article at the OC Reg. Sometimes that site takes forever to load (today's one of those times) and then it may be behind a paywall - or not. Here is the link if anyone wants to try their luck anyhow.

Reading up about Ashton's college - I saw a few comments talking about it being physically depressing. And it doesn't strike me as a brainiac college, though it does strike me as quite low-cost?

I am just wondering if Ashton was one of those teens who find living away from home and attending college really difficult, and if perhaps it wasn't his first choice and there was some resentment of mom and dad. Perhaps it exacerbated some mental health issues that were already there?

It just seems strange with LE so certain money was not a motive, and Ashton apparently showing no signs of any problems at all. He does look really out of it in the mugshot.....

If LE is so certain money is not a motive, does that mean Brad and Andra didn't leave any, or Ashton has told them why he committed the crime?

Brad Sachs was arrested by Newport Beach police in March 2000 following a custody exchange of the couple's natural-born children that led to Andra Sachs requesting a restraining order. She claimed her then-estranged husband assaulted her by opening a car door that slammed into her stomach before his vehicle collided with hers. As Andra checked on the children in her car, Brad is alleged to have thrown her on the pavement, causing her to black out briefly and sustain injuries to her head, left thigh, knee and ankle.

A judge issued the protective order on March 28, 2000, and subsequent custody exchanges had to be done at a neutral location. The couple was also ordered to enroll in parenting and anger management classes and participate in individual therapy, writes Anderson, citing court records.

I am not sleuthing, but I do question how children could be adopted into a family where there is a record of violence like that. It doesn't seem right to me.

<modsnip>

I have wondered the same thing zweibel. Friends of mine who adopted were put through the ringer in every aspect of their lives. Seems like these two were poor candidates to become adoptive parents with all the legal problems and unstable home life etc.

the booking photo is creepy : Yes...but i having seen him dozens of times in the last 2 years...he NEVER looked like that photo. Always clean shaven...short short hair,etc...

Yeah I saw a previous photo of him smiling from a few years ago. The contrast between that and his booking photo was striking. Didn't even look like the same person.

Wondering what the story is on the parent's divorce and if something about it affected Ashton. So, did they adopt the younger sibling together after their divorce? Don't mind my questions, I know I'm going to have to go back in this thread to read, but I think I need a nap first.

Teenage Son Arrested in Shooting Deaths of San Juan Capistrano Couple

"Bradford and Andra Sachs divorced in 2000, according to court documents, but were residing together at the time of their deaths."

http://www.ocregister.com/articles/sachs-605003-parents-old.html.

The prosecutor said Sachs entered the family home in the middle of the night and, “brutally, absolutely brutally” shot Bradford Hans Sachs, 57, and Andra Sachs, 54.
He is accused of then shooting his 8-year-old brother in his bedroom and shot, and missed, his 17-year-old sister.
No one inside the home recognized the shooter, and Ashton Sachs fled before deputies arrived, Baytieh said.
Sachs then caught a flight back to the Seattle area, Baytieh said.

“I can tell you one thing, it's not financially motivated,” said Deputy District Attorney Ebrahim Baytieh.

I'm a bit afraid of getting modsnipped again, but am I allowed to think out loud that if money was not the motive, and "brutally, absolutely brutally" is what the DDA said, that there might be a very, very personal reason?

I believe the trial will focus on the family dynamics between Ashton and his parents. I can only think of one thing that might cause him to attempt to kill his siblings, outside of money.

MOO. IMO. I'm usually wrong.

According to local radio, KFI AM640, it was reported that Ashton Sachs was severely DEPRESSED prior to the incident. No reasons were given other than that. Since money is ruled as as a motivating factor, maybe we can expect a defense due to temporary insanity.

  • #354
MissExec I don't believe temp insanity will be the defense. I'm in the area and IMO the defense will concentrate on family dynamics. Perhaps *different* family dynamics.

I see no indication of mental illness in his attorney's comments, nor in the DA.

I said a while ago that it reminded me of the Menendez brothers. It still does, but with a different motive. IMO.

Almost caught up, and exhausted from all the reading. I enjoyed all your posts and appreciated people sharing what they know. Wow, the murdered couple had complex business dealings. Lovely home, but I think in the end none of their zealous striving was worth it, but that's just my opinion.

Hi Curious Me! Good to see you!

Because this case is so unusual regarding the victims and their histories it has been decided to let posters discuss the history and MSM articles that have been posted. Most of those posts will be reapproved. However, please, please do not resort to name calling regardless of what personal feelings a poster may have for the Sachs. It is against TOS.

If you are unsure of your post you can always PM a MOD and discuss it with them.

I have been curious about Brad and Andra Sachs business dealings in Mexico.

I found a number of posts by Andra Sachs at this Ripoffreport link:

http://www.ripoffreport.com/r/Playa...cean-front-condominium-in-San-Felipe-I-300755

This is just one of her posts but it goes hand in hand with other reports about a lawsuit related to some business dealings in Mexico. Bronx Brawler may find some solace in this if he didn't already know about this.

"Updates & Rebuttals
#1 Author of original report
Settled with Soblar
AUTHOR: Chewy - (U.S.A.)
SUBMITTED: Sunday, May 18, 2008

During the last six months I posted and sent emails making inflammatory and derogatory statements about Playa del Paraiso and its developer, Soblar. After careful consideration and receiving new information from Soblar regarding the development, I agree to retract these statements. I hereby withdraw and retract my statements. Andra R. Sachs & Kids Love LLC"

It seems they sued her and this post was a requirement of at least part of the settlement or legal outcome.

Monte Burghardt was a telephone guest on Nancy Grace's program last night. The show was hosted by Jean Casarez.

His segment begins about 2/3s of the way through.

snip

"BURGHARDT: Well, I hadn`t interacted with him over the last several years because I -- his parents and I worked together just strictly on real estate. That was just full-time. But prior to that, around the time I sold them the home in 2009, in 2010, when he was basically 15, 16-ish, he was just an obnoxious, you know, very bright, practical joker sometimes too. Not being, you know, being the victim myself of some of his practical jokes, I was -- didn`t appreciate it at the time, but it was all in fun."

He goes on to discuss an incident at the Peppertree Bend housewarming party.
