There could be a friend that his parents, girlfriend, friends from school and his room mate are not aware of.
This friend could be helping him.

online games are another venue where friends are made. i just finished skyping with a good friend (2 years now) from England that i met online gaming. my daughter was in an intense relationship with a guy who abruptly broke up with her to run off to another state to be with a girl he met gaming. i know 3 couples who met in the game i played who ended up marrying. strange new world we live in.

Last I saw, there was one posted on the first page of thread 2 or 3. Don't think it's being actively updated. HTH

I found the timeline - it was this this post in Thread #1 And here is the part I am now focused on:
Thursday 9:am Bryce ran out of gas and called roadside assistance from the Buttonwillow Rest Area west of Bakersfield, a fact confirmed by the credit card company.

Thursday 12pm a roadside assistance serviceman named Christian delivers three gallons of gasoline to Bryce, according to a $20 credit card purchase for the fuel. “He’s not answering his phone (at this time),” his mother said.

Thursday 12:30pm Karen Laspisa calls serviceman Christian and asks about her son. He tells her he appears “OK” but adds: “His eyes look a little red.” Bryce does not answer his cell phone.

Thursday 9pm responding to a call from the mother, CHP officers stop and search Bryce’s car spotted on Lagoon Drive in Buttonwillow. “Something happened in the whole 10 hours he was around there,” she said. This may be the time at which he was considered missing with police first but then taken off that list.

Thursday 10pm Karen speaks to her son on the phone and asks: “What are you doing?” His response, she said, is: “I’m going to hang with friends later.” Thirty minutes later, he bought a $1.71 beverage from a Shell gas station near Buttonwillow exit on the corner of Tracey Ave and Lagoon Dr

Friday 12:30 am parents tried calling him but got no answer

Friday 1:50am Bryce’s parents reached him and he had said he was driving on the I-5 but could not see any signs, she said.

Friday 2:08 am last call to parents, was tired and going to pullover to rest. “He told me ‘I got off the I-5 and I’m in a suburban area. I’m going to sleep in my car,’” said Karen Laspisa (mother) “I told him to call me when he got up the next morning.”
He never called

Between 2:08 a.m. and 5 a.m. Friday - Bryce makes three trips to the crash site – the last trip ending with the crash, according to what his mother described as surveillance footage captured by cameras set up near Castaic Lake.

The crash had to happen between 4:20 a.m. and 5:15 a.m, It had gone down a 15-foot ravine nose first and landed on the passenger side. Bryce (or someone) has used an emergency tool to break the back window

Friday 5:30 am officers of the California Highway Patrol found his 2003 Toyota Highlander SUV on its side

From the law enforcement transcript (you have to scroll WAAAAAY down or search for the word "Buttonwillow) on this page - Transcript - I noted in the conclusion (read paragraph in reverse):
Missing adult. 7:15 p.m. Thursday, Aug 29. ...
Description
9:33 p.m.: DEP HERNANDEZ FROM KERN CO SHERIFF`S HAS FOUND SUBJECT BRYCE AT A HOTEL AT HWY 58//FWY 5 SUBJECT SAID THAT HE WAS ON HIS WAY TO VISIT A FRIEND DEP STATED SUBJECT IS NO FURTHER ASSISTANCE NEEDED AND NOTHING WRONG WITH HIM SUBJECT WAS TOLD TO CONTACT HIS FAMILY AND ADV OF LOCATION

BBM. They said he was at a hotel, which would make sense the amount of time he was there. There are a couple of $35 - $38 hotels right there at the truck stop they mention. It is possible that Bryce did not relay the hotel part back to his parents when he did finally speak with his mom at 10PM, about a half hour after the officer told him to call his parents.

But the head injury, accidental roll of the car, and his current wanderings are a separate matter. I do believe he was coming home to share new information in the big talk, and things inadvertently changed. Does Bryce have any friends that would meet him at a hotel in Buttonwillow, ie, who hail from somewhere around there? Musings...

@ kmw461:

If of sound mind, does this young man have it in him to just up
and leave his parents suffering without knowing if he is dead or alive?

Would he / could he do such a thing? TIA

  • #327
I agree that it may seem far fetched that he left voluntarily but I followed a case where a young girl left the state, drove to FL , abandoned her car, and ended up being found about an hour south in Miami. She was a normal college student who probably cracked under pressure or had personal demons. All the while, I feared suicide but alas, she made it!! Her parents actually found her on the steps of a police station. She had cut and dyed her hair...

Hoping Bryce will have the same happy ending.

So he was in a motel during those ten or twelve hours initially? I had not seen that before.

This is the relevant part of the transcript:

unclear if he was staying at the hotel or just in the lot in his car

Ok, that's new information. Nothing has been previously mention about him being at a hotel in Buttonwillow. And why was Kern County Sheriffs making the contact, didn't Mom say she contacted CHP? Two completely different agencies.

So he was in Buttonwillow for at least 11 hours, not 10. Where did he get the money to pay for a hotel room? Nothing was mentioned about that being on his card. Nor has there been any mention of food.

So this is why he called his parents. And according to that other report, he was visiting with a friend THERE in Buttonwillow it sounded like otherwise, why didn't he say he was going home for the holiday weekend to be with his parents...........unless he wasn't.

Well it does not say he had a room, actually.

wonder how Bryce felt having that Deputy checking up on him-
and then telling that he was on the way to a friend and not his parents?

I did notice that at NO time, EVER did Bryce say he was going home to see his parents.

He told Kern County Sheriff he was going to see friends. He told his mom he was going to hang out with friends. He did not say he was going home.

Out in the middle of God forsaken Buttonwillow, on a drive from Chico, if asked by police where you are headed, most people would say they are headed home for the holiday, or headed to see his parents. Not Bryce. He says he's going to see friend. Weird. Just weird. He also never told his parents he was coming home, not from what I've read.

No he didn't. He seemed to be ambiguous about so many things. He never said he was going home either. He was in the hotel parking lot, but that wouldn't mean he had a room. It was over 100* in Buttonwillow that day, if he slept in his car, he had the engine running.

Incidently, other than the 3 gallons of gasoline he paid $20 for, there has been no mention of him filling up anywhere either.

Okay I read it some where now can't find it- that his 2am call with Mom, about going to pull off interstate, the cell pinged supposedly in Fraizer Park? Well Fraizer Park is 33 miles from Castaic and that tower is here-( AT&T one)

True, though they said "truck stop" when looking for him, and "at a hotel" when they found him. For those $35 hotels, might be that if he was meeting a friend to spend the day / evening, that the friend had the payment. If those Kern county officers could relay back exactly where Bryce was found, that would clear up the "10 hours in Buttonwillow heat" question. And if he was with a buddy there, the hotel manager could let someone know who paid for the room, and if on a credit card, he could be found, and that buddy may know where Bryce is now.
All conjecture, but something there to look into, certainly, IMO of course!

Back up folks....

He DID get gas other than the 3 gallons. It was noted on the debit/credit card he was using.

He DID say he was going home right before the wreck. His last call was with one of the parents and he said he was tired, and pulling off to take a nap, and would then be home. That was like around 2 am or so... then police showed up at their home asking if their vehicle had been stolen because they found it wrecked with no driver.

We have nothing stated he ate at all in 3 days/but we also haven't heard if he had any cash. Uncle stated records were checked, and small purchases PRIOR to all this didn't indicated he was stashing cash.

  • #338
I wonder if the vehicle was still running, had the lights on, or radio on?

  • #339
but he did not tell the deputy he was going home
