CA - Caleb Quick shooting: Clovis Police asks for patience while detectives work to identify and arrest shooter

From the CPD Press Conference

No real information was revealed, both suspects are sixteen year-old minors who were in a dating relationship.

Both knew Caleb, but nothing more revealed. A gun was found in the suspects home, testing is being conducted. Both have attorney's and are not speaking to LE. Case is in the DA's hands now, Fleming won't speak to anything on charges - needs to come from the DA's Office.

Reporters asked about the rumors being circulated about Caleb and a possible motive for the murder. Fleming said, "we are chasing down those rumors to see if there is any validity behind them. But it doesn't help the situation or the family who grieving right now, to hear some of the things that are being said out there".

Hopefully with time, something will be revealed in MSM and will be able to discuss.

Fleming also briefly addressed rampant rumors online about the case, saying, “It would be nice if you don’t know things, not to spread rumors and let us do our job. It doesn’t help the situation, and it doesn’t help the family who is grieving.

“Whatever the motive is, taking someone’s life it’s not acceptable. It’s not something that ever should be the answer. That’s why we worked hard to make sure these people were held accountable.”

I’m predicting the female minor who drove the vehicle will make a plea deal. As I understand it, both obtained private legal counsel - female has a high profile attorney.

Be interesting to see how this case progresses.

The Fresno County District Attorney’s Office has filed two juvenile petitions against a 16-year-old male and a 16-year-old female in connection with the murder of Caleb Quick (18, of Clovis). The petitions were filed in the Juvenile Division of the Fresno County Superior Court.

The male minor is charged with the following:

  • One (1) count of MURDER [Penal Code § 187(a)];
    • Enhancement: PERSONAL AND INTENTIONAL DISCHARGE OF A FIREARM CAUSING DEATH [Penal Code § 12022.53(d)];
    • Enhancement: MURDER COMMITTED BY LYING IN WAIT [Penal Code § 190.2(a)(15)]

  • The female minor is charged with:
  • One (1) count of MURDER [Penal Code § 187(a)];
    • Enhancement: COPARTICIPANT ARMED WITH A FIREARM [Penal Code § 12022(a)(1)].
If transferred to and convicted in adult court, the male minor faces a potential sentence of life without the possibility of parole (LWOP) and the female minor faces a potential sentence of 26 years to life. If the case remains in juvenile court, both minors face potential confinement of 7 years or up to age 25, pursuant to current juvenile sentencing guidelines.

Following changes in California law through Proposition 57 and Senate Bill 1391, minors aged 16 or 17 at the time of the alleged offense are no longer automatically tried as adults. Prosecutors must instead request a transfer hearing under Welfare and Institutions Code § 707(a)(1) to determine if the minor should be tried in adult criminal court based on the seriousness of the offense, criminal history, and other statutory factors.

The Fresno County District Attorney’s Office will be filing such a motion for both minors. The timeline for that hearing is unknown at this time and will be determined at a later date by the Court.

Detention hearings for both minors are scheduled for Wednesday, May 14, 2025, at 1:30 p.m. in Department 99A of the Juvenile Division of the Fresno County Superior Court.

While juvenile proceedings are generally closed to the public, members of the media may attend in accordance with Welfare and Institutions Code § 676(a), which allows access in certain serious felony cases, including murder. Media representatives are advised to follow all local court procedures for requesting access.

Due to the involvement of minors, their names and identifying information are being withheld unless and until they are ordered transferred to adult court, in compliance with confidentiality protections under California law.

Both are having a hard time “adjusting to being in custody “ and are “making the best of a difficult situation “ …

Should have thought about that before they planned to kill someone? Caleb’s family is having a hard time adjusting to losing him.

EXCLUSIVE: Community gathers to remember 18-year-old killed outside Clovis McDonald's

"So many people spoke of Caleb as a big brother, protector, class clown, the guy that anyone could talk to, and if he saw you being an outcast, he would bring you in," Stephen said.

The Quick family now with an unfillable void, as they hope for justice for Caleb in the court system. The two teens are due back in Juvenile court next month.

🙁
Well there it is, now that it’s been stated in MSM. The allegations can be discussed.

What wasn’t stated by his attorney in the interview - was the female driver SA’d by Caleb? Obviously vigilante justice is never the right answer. But if true, this could really influence a jury or a plea deal.

Vigilante justice isn't ever right. But it is truly amazing how much SA messes up lives, I will say that.
That rumor had been absolutely flying around here.
All over from the beginning. Too many people stating the same thing for it not to be true. Plus that weird comment from his Mom in one of the early interviews. Led me to believe she knew about it too. Caleb was in online classes, supposedly barred from attending HS in person for aome sort of behavior issue.

This is starting to sound very similar to the Bobby Kent murder case (which is what the movie “Bully” is based on). It will be very interesting to see how this plays out in terms of conviction/sentencing. I do think with this new piece of info out in the media (even though this is not new to locals), this case will start to get a lot more attention.

I’ve been surprised that no one really noticed this case. It’s been really interesting to see it unfold.

More details from the Fresno Bee:
“Outside the courtroom, Coleman, the defense attorney, addressed the accusations against Quick, saying that the shooting and accusations against Rangel needed more context to be fully understood.
It didn’t just happen because there was a beef over a hamburger or money owed. The allegations by the police is that this occurred as a result of a sexual assault against a number of girls by this victim,” Coleman said. “I am not in any way suggesting that that’s appropriate, but that’s the allegations of the police.” Coleman said the video of the alleged assault had been found by Clovis police. He said it depicted a girl unrelated to the homicide case, and confirmed the girl was not the 16-year-old defendant accused of being the getaway driver.

So was the victim in that assault, related to the shooter or driver? Sort of confused on that point.
