The man, who identified himself only as Randy, was found July 4 under an overpass in Carmel Valley and brought to the burn unit at UC San Diego Medical Center, where he died July 10.
Officials in the Medical Examiner's office believe the man set himself on fire and may have been homeless. Due to the extensive burn injuries he sustained, they were unable to use fingerprints or locate an identifier such as a tattoo or birthmark to help identify him.
Investigators said the man was believed to be either Hispanic or white and somewhere between his 20s and early 40s. He had short dark hair, green or hazel eyes, stood between 5 feet, 9 inches and 5 feet, 11 inches tall and weighed roughly 270 pounds.
