Day four of West trial focuses on accounts of children seen in Cal City home

Testimony in the fourth day of the West trial focused primarily on witness statements regarding the number of children seen in the California City home.

The realtor who helped the couple buy the Cal City home and an exterminator who visited the home shortly after they moved in were called to testify Monday, both asked about how many children they saw in the home. While both recalled seeing a number of children at the home, neither could remember exactly how many the saw.

[...]

According to realtor Robert Dees, he began working with the Wests some time in May 2020. He said while the looked a few homes together over several months, the children would remain in the car so he never noted how many there were. Dees said after he sold the Wests their Cal City home, he went by on Sept. 11, 2020, the day they moved in, and noticed the kids on the back patio.

[...]

The other witness to testify to seeing children in the home was Antelope Valley Pest Control owner Joseph Karschamroon. He said he visited the home on Sept. 15, 2020 and noted seeing several children, but couldn't remember how many he saw. He said he asked the couple to take them outside while he worked in the house. He said he remembered a carseat and child carrier, and that the children were well-behaved inside the car.

I agree that it's relevant-- especially since there seems to be this false narrative that two healthy, happy toddlers came to the West family as fosters in late 2018, and shortly after they adopted them, they were murdered and disappeared. It's equally as important to understand the history that may have contributed to their death so it does not repeat itself.

The truth is that Orrin was only 3 months old when he was removed from his biological home by Human Service after his mother took him to the hospital on Nov 13, 2016, crying uncontrollably, and doctors determined his legs were broken. At the time, he'd been home alone with his biological father. From Nov 2016 until late 2018 when Orrin was placed with the West family, it's unknown how many foster homes Orrin had been in.

When Orson was born in June 2017, he was released into his mother's care and went home with her. But according to his birth mother, Orson was also taken from his biological home about a week later. How many foster homes was Orson in from June 2017 to late 2018 when he landed with the West family? Why did the previous foster family surrender the baby? Did he have special needs?

IMO, knowing the history also helps explains why the toddlers seemed to fear being left alone in a room and cried constantly (per TW). Perhaps Orrin's broken legs did not heal properly and he experienced physical pain.

We will never know. Nonetheless, it's very clear that the West couple were obviously not prepared or a good fit to foster toddlers with special needs, and how placing them with these parents ultimately resulted in their deaths.

One truly has to ask if the Wests were a last resort for Human Services or why they placed two toddlers with a family that could not care for them.

I fear the children were not surrendered by the West parents when they realized they could not care for them because they wanted to keep the income benefits assigned to each child. MOO

Where are the boys? The tragic disappearance of 2 children from California

These poor little darlings.
Suffered so much in such a short life.

I am only just catching up the thread but I feel they are being robbed of the world stage atm because so many higher profile cases are on.
It is hard just finding a source. :-/

Been looking forward to this trial because we know so little about it.
Very disappointing! :(

[...]

As the trial resumed after a one-week break, Officer Michael Kelakios testified he went to the Wests’ house soon after the parents reported their children missing just for his “own peace of mind” and wasn’t directed to do so by an officer investigating the case. ...

[...]

Defense attorney Alekxia Torres Stallings, who represents Jacqueline West, asserted some portions of footage from Kelakios’ body-worn camera shown in court were only partial clips and the area where Kelakios looked for footprints was contaminated.

Kelakios testified he remembered there were other people in the area searching for the boys, and became upset when they weren’t following a “grid search.” The area where boys’ footprints could have been found had also been walked over by several others trying to help find the boys, Kelakios testified.

Torres Stallings asked Kelakios if he understood the importance of staying unbiased throughout an investigation while asserting a narrow-minded focus could lead officers to overlook important pieces of evidence. Kelakios testified that yes, this was important.

She then asked the officer if he remembers making a Facebook post in which he stated opinions about the case, landing him in trouble with the police. Kelakios repeatedly said he doesn’t recall making the Facebook post.

Kelakios also testified he didn’t write a report about his meeting with Trezell West and didn’t follow up on any information Trezell provided about the biological family potentially getting involved in the case and other tips. The officer added he did pass along some information to another officer investigating the case.
