South Pasadena police are searching for a missing man who was last seen near a Monrovia trailhead on Saturday.

The man was identified as Colin Brian Walker, 53.

Walker is an avid hiker whose vehicle was found parked in the 900 block of Ridgeside near a trailhead, police said.

Surveillance video from a nearby resident captured Walker heading toward the trailhead on Saturday around 6:23 a.m.

Since that day, Walker has not been seen or heard from, police said. He was reported missing two days later on Monday.

Walker was last seen wearing a gray shirt, dark-colored shorts, brown boots with gray socks, and a brown hat. He was carrying a large green backpack and hiking sticks.

Anyone who may recognize Walker or has any information on his whereabouts is asked to call South Pasadena police at 626-403-7297.

A neighbor’s surveillance video caught Walker heading to the trailhead on foot at 6:23 a.m. that day, police said. He was reported missing Monday, July 17.

Monrovia is about 25 miles northeast of Los Angeles.

If you’re planning to hike, the National Park Service says there are 10 essentialsyou should take:
  • Navigation: Pack a map, compass and a GPS system. Make sure you study your route beforehand and understand how to use the tools.
  • Sun protection: Sunglasses, sunscreen and a hat can help protect your skin and eyes from UV rays.
  • Insulation: A jacket, hat, gloves, raincoat and thermal underwear can help you be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions.
  • Illumination: A flashlight, lantern and headlamp can create light if you get stuck in the dark — and don’t forget to pack extra batteries.
  • First-aid supplies: It’s a good idea to have a first-aid kit on hand while hiking. Check the expiration date on items before you pack them.
  • Fire: Matches and a lighter can help start fire to act as an emergency signal in times of need.
  • Repair kit and tools: Duct tape, a knife, screwdriver and scissors can be helpful if items break during your hike or you need assistance.
  • Nutrition: You should pack an extra day’s worth of food in case something goes wrong. Park officials recommend having “salty and easy to digest snacks.”
  • Hydration: You should drink water often and before you feel thirsty if you’re hiking in hot weather. Keeping your body hydrated is “of utmost importance,” park officials said.
  • Emergency shelter: Packing a tent, space blanket, tarp and bivy can help you be prepared if severe weather breaks out or your plan takes a turn.

I hope it's OK to post this info from his brother re a hiking group search and their efforts to find his car (they did). It's interesting and I'm very impressed with the response he got:

Hope Colin is found soon. Based on his photo walking towards the trailhead, he looks well prepared for a hike.

Please, always let people know where you’re headed! I kayak by myself, but someone always knows when I’m in the water and when I’m back on land. Just in case, because you never know what could happen. It gives us a better chance of finding you!

Be well, Colin. They’re out looking for you.

That is a huge backpack, I wonder if he was going camping and not just a hike?

I just read his backpack is full of tools to maintain the trails-not to be gone in the wilderness overnight. He is lost in the Bobcat Fire area, for perspective.
I am in Monrovia.
On my way to work I pass the Sierra Madre Search and Rescue building. I have been wondering what Riverside Search and Rescue trucks are doing at their headquarters. Now I know.
There is also a man missing in Altadena since around July 1. Last name Zisook. I don't believe he has been found, either.
And it is VERY HOT this week.

I believe it is a friend of Colin that left the comment regarding what was in the pack.

This is a great link! The flight patterns on page 2 are hopeful.

In case you live in the area: According to someone I hike with who is a friend of Colin Walker's wife, he was going to play Brazilian Choro music tomorrow, Saturday, 7/22/23, at 7pm, at St Barnabas's Church in Eagle Rock (2109 Chickasaw Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90041).
The pastor has decided that the Choro concert will held as a fundraiser ($15 cover) for Sierra Madre Search and Rescue as well as an opportunity for members of the community to talk with and support each other.

Thank you for the heads up! I would totally go but I am attending another music event of a coworker. That is a very sweet fundraising idea.
This morning on the way to work I saw San Dimas S & R was in town to help.
There is a helicopter looking around now in the hills above my house.

This morning at 7:15 there were at least 50 vehicles at S.M. S&R. Lot's of people receiving instructions in the driveway.
Malibu S&R on the case as well.
The best are all out there for Colin.

From today's short LA Times piece on the search for Colin Walker:

After a week of searching the steep slopes of the San Gabriel Mountains, rescue teams have found no sign of a 53-year-old hiker who was last seen walking toward a trailhead near Monrovia Canyon, police say.

Colin Walker of South Pasadena parked his car and headed into the wilderness shortly after dawn July 15 on Ridgeside Drive in Monrovia, police said. A Ring home security camera taped him setting off in dark shorts and a gray T-shirt with a large green backpack and walking sticks.

An avid hiker, Walker has been researching lost trails and lost water features, said Domenica Megerdichian, deputy city manager of South Pasadena.

A week of searching yields no sign of hiker who vanished on slopes below Mt. Wilson

Unfortunately, there has been no luck so far in finding Colin Walker and the search has been scaled back.

MONROVIA — Investigators Wednesday are believed to have discovered the remains of a man who went missing nearly two weeks ago after taking a hike on the Clamshell Trail in Monrovia.

Investigators from the South Pasadena Police Department recovered the remains of a man from the Lower Clamshell Area in the Angeles National Forest Wednesday morning, according to South Pasadena Deputy City Manager Domenica Megerdichian.

The recovery location was within the area of an extensive search and rescue operation for Colin Walker, 53, of South Pasadena, who began a hike on the Clamshell Trail July 15, Megerdichian said.

Based upon the location of the discovery and property found at the scene, SPPD investigators are reasonably certain the remains are those of Walker, Megerdichian said. No foul play is suspected.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office is continuing its investigation, which will include identifying the remains and determining the cause and manner of death, Megerdichian said.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Los Angeles County Fire Department Air Operations Section and Sierra Madre Search and Rescue Team provided assistance to South Pasadena police for the search.
