I'm kind of surprised he didn't go with a friend/classmate. It sounds like kind of a group project. I wish he had taken someone along.

His vehicle was found at the rest stop around 6 p.m. that evening, with no sign of Dante.

de la Torre is a member of the Colfax boys varsity soccer team, which faced Sutter Wednesday night in his absence.

"Dante is the type of person who brings happiness and joy to every situation. He loves his team, his sport and his school endlessly and always puts the happiness of those around him first," said Colfax soccer coach Kaleb McCallister. "There is a massive community of people who want to help, but the best thing to do right now is to trust those who are in charge of the operation and pray for Dante and his family.

Was Dante supposed to play in the match? His car was found by 6 PM, looks like someone was already looking for him by that time.

Rain looks like it’s heading into the area soon.

Placer Union High school calendar doesn't mention this week as early dismissal (we have 1pm early dismissal for kids this week in a different district) so it's interesting he'd be off doing a school project at 1230pm on a Wednesday.

It looks to me that he goes to Colfax High School. Here’s the schedule. I couldn’t quite figure it out.

There are two storms coming to the area, tonight and then later over the weekend. Colfax/Gold Run is in that transition zone that sometimes gets snow but sometimes is too low for snow and gets only rain -- but I believe this weekend's storms are predicted to bring snow to lower elevations, which would mean snow for sure at Gold Run. Hope they find him tonight!

Current comments are saying he was found, and unfortunately it doesn't sound like good news. :(

This is the announcement from Placer County. I am still hoping this kiddo is ok.

So heart wrenching! My deepest sympathy to his family and the community.

That is a rest stop so often used on drives up to the mountains...it's so beautiful up there... thoughts go out to the family.

This is heartbreaking. Rest in peace, Dante.

Oh no! :( What happened? Some kind of accident, a fall maybe?
RIP Dante

I think they meant hand towel ,Bath Hand Towels : Target and a shovel, like a camping shovel IMO.
It’s irrelevant now but “hand trowel or small shovel” makes a lot more sense than “hand towel or small shovel.” The “or” is part of the original missing announcement.

“Foul play not suspected.” Per the paywalled article linked below:

For what it’s worth, I score high school student projects for one of the Advanced Placement subjects. I have read a number of scientific papers that involve students analyzing and comparing a variety of soil samples (or samples of other natural materials) from the area they live in, and many times the samples are taken from public areas like rest stops or parks or hiking trails. I wonder if this young man was working on a similar type of project when he unfortunately lost his life.

RIP, Dante.

Oh, how heartbreaking :(. I'm hoping this was a tragic accident and not a suicide. RIP, handsome boy.
