I hadn't looked at my alerts in several days, but was just thinking about David Wicks when I got up today.

I see that the jury has now deliberated six days in Juan Venegas' 2nd trial. Deliberations will resume on Monday.

Juan Venegas, the man accused of lighting a gas station clerk on fire in Johnson Park in 2016, was once again left without answers on Tuesday after a jury was unable to determine a verdict in the now two year old murder.

However, now that he's been tried twice without a conviction, the real question is whether or not he will face a third trial for the murder.

The next court date set for Venegas is March 12, when they will determine the next steps in the case.

Juan Venegas pleads guilty prior to his third trial. Quoting the link:

Venegas made the admissions and apologized to the clerk's family Thursday afternoon after pleading guilty to the crime in Shasta County Superior Court, District Attorney Stephanie Bridgett said at a press conference.

"He entered his pleas of guilty. He turned and faced the surviving family members. He let them know that he was in fact the person who murdered David Wicks," Bridgett said.

"He had been at a casino and lost money. He was high on methamphetamine and that he went to the gas station with the intention of robbing the gas station to get money," the DA said.

Bridgett said an important condition of Venegas entering the guilty plea was that he admit to being Wick's actual murderer and also give reasons for the killing.

Another requirement was that Venegas make a statement to the Wicks' surviving members — his wife and his stepdaughter — who were present in the courtroom to hear his apology.

Venegas will be given a stipulated state prison term of 17 years, eight months, Bridgett said at a Thursday press conference.

Venegas pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter, arson causing great bodily injury and mayhem, Bridgett said.

Wow! I was totally not expecting that! At least he did the right thing by confessing.

I’m relieved for the family. What an ordeal! One thing I’m curious about is that early reports said that Wicks told LE that the attack was “personal.” It doesn’t seem that it was. Perhaps he was misunderstood. Such a tragedy...apparently because of meth. :(

It does seem like a short sentence, Neesaki. Although I think it should have been longer, I’m sure David’s family had to agree to it, so I’m glad for them if they are satisfied.

OT, Thanks for missing me! Likewise. :) I’ll pop in from time to time, especially when old cases are resolved, but I’ve just needed a break from constant tragedy for my own well-being.
