Not that is tells us much, there isn't even an address listed. But, I found Denise's savings account in the California unclaimed property database. Evidently after a long time of no contact from an account holder, banks have to transfer the funds to the state (at least in California).

Missing 40 years today. :(

According to The Charley Project, Denise was a smoker. I wonder if she stepped outside to smoke? Were her cigarettes found inside her apartment? MOO

Denise Holly Dorfman – The Charley Project
Distinguishing Characteristics Caucasian female. Brown hair, brown eyes. Dorfman wore large-framed eyeglasses at the time of her 1980 disappearance. She has a mole on the back of her neck. She smokes cigarettes.

Details of Disappearance
Dorfman was last seen in San Francisco, California on February 9, 1980. She has never been heard from again. She was a student at the University of San Francisco at the time of her disappearance and had a job with the university as well. She was reported missing after she didn't show up for her job.

Her apartment at Lake Street and 22nd Avenue was discovered unlocked, with the lights on, and Dorfman's purse and money inside. There was no indication of forced entry or a struggle. Her case remains unsolved.

Her sister, Inez, was living in San Francisco and exchanging messages about her on Ancestry as recently as 2014. Unfortunately there seems to have been no news since she went missing, despite the family paying for expensive private detectives and offering a $5000 reward. There is also a chapter in a book on books.google which gives more background on her family and touches on her disappearance - My Footprint
Both her parents are long dead so her sister is her last close relative.

Denise had received psychiatric treatment for depression so, although the family denied the possibility, suicide or cutting all ties for a new life cannot be discounted. 1980022907517_01

More on her personality comes from reports of her disappearance in USF papers (which also note the reward increased to $7000). It states that "As well as being an artist, Denise Dorfman was also an accomplished dancer. She danced in the "Nutcracker Ballet" for the San Francisco Dance Troope last Christmas. She is also a concert pianist. Dorfman also liked to sketch on the beach and near the S.F Marina." It further notes that the private detective retained was Hal Lipset, who was very well known, suggesting no expense was spared in trying to find her.

This seems very sad, a young person with a troubled life disappears forever. My first reaction is self harm but the fact is anything could have happened.

Was she dating?

On February 12, the secretary of Employee Relations at the university got a call from someone who claimed to be Dorfman and said they were taking a leave of absence. She has never been heard from again and this it's unclear whether it was actually her that called the university. Her apartment at Lake Street and 22nd Avenue was discovered unlocked, with the lights on, and Dorfman's purse and money inside. There was no indication of forced entry or a struggle.

At the time of Dorfman's disappearance, she was an artist, a concert pianist and an accomplished dancer. Her case remains unsolved.

Was she dating?
Good question. Too bad the private detective could not jump on here and give us some insight. I’m curious about the call that was made to. What other factors might be important in her disappearance.

Just as you say... some boyfriend? A secret admirer or someone with envy? Apparently she was very well known and perhaps aroused feelings in someone who was not reciprocated... A beautiful young woman full of life and very talented, now finished... I hope with all my heart that one day her remains are found and the case is closed...
Whatever happens
Rest in peace

Do we know if Denise is of Ashkenazi origin?

I tried to restore some of Denise's photos with an AI photo enhancer.
Her shirt came out kind of crazy in one of her photos.

On Sept. 4th I submitted Denise Dorfman and Palm Desert Jane Doe 1980 as a potential match. It has now been confirmed that Denise Dorfman and Palm Desert Jane Doe are not the same individual.

Denise now has ten exclusions on her NamUs page, which was last updated on September 27, 2025.

Did somebody submit Olympia Jane Doe for comparison with Denise? The recent genealogical testing proved Olympia Jane Doe is of Ashkenazi ancestry, the same as Denise
