So, before she left, she said she was going to run away and stay in the mountains for a few days. Due to these facts, I believe that Doug picked her up in the car his friend stole from his stepmother, and he did something to her, or she was picked up by someone nefarious on the way to the mountains to go find Doug. First, I would question the friend who stole his stepmother's car to see if he can place Doug/what they were doing.

Finally, what was the situation with the mom's boyfriend? He was just hanging out at the house with the kids while the mum was at work. What was his criminal history? Would not be unusual for a pervert to attach himself to an overworked mother and taking advantage of the situation.
