LOL, just call me Captain Obvious, I was coming here to tell you there's something wrong with the date :)

Hey, at least it got a bunch of people to look at the thread (64 page views as of right now).

Maybe someone reading can find more info on why Donald is missing? ;)

Wonder why he used an alias ?

Wonder why he used an alias ?

It could just mean his parents divorced and changed his name when he was a kid. Like if his mom raised him and decided to give him her maiden name instead of his father's name (just an example I don't know if that's the case-- he could have been adopted or changed his name for personal reasons too). That is pretty common. I'll see if I can find anything on Ancestry or FamilySearch

Found his SS Death record on Ancestry.com that shows he was declared deceased Feb 1983:

Name: Don James Gregory
[Donald James Geddes Jr]
[D Geddes]

Gender: Male
Race: White

Birth Date:18 Apr 1959
Birth Place: Long Beach L, California
[Long Beach, California]

Death Date: Feb 1983
SSN: *REDACTED*
Relationship of Signature: Not signed, SSA prepared.

Notes: 29 Aug 1975: Name listed as DON JAMES GREGORY; 12 Jun 1981: Name listed as DONALD JAMES GEDDES JR; 06 Nov 1990: Name listed as D J GEDDES

I redacted his SSN. The notes don't give a lot of info on why changes were made the dates they were but from my experience looking at these records in the past I'm guessing the fact that there was some activity in 1990 probably indicates that was when his family or the government took actions to have his declared deceased.* The Feb 1983 date would then be added retroactively to the record at that time.

It seems he was first registered with the last name Gregory in 1975-- He would have been about 15. This is a common age to be registered with SS back then. In the 1970's and 1980's they did not register people right away at birth as they do today. Usually SS registration back then happened when someone got their first after school job or opened their own bank account.

The 1981 date where he changed his name to Geddes Jr would have been when he was around 21. That reflects a personal choice, IMO, since he was an adult.

*This is only my opinion/an educated guess so take it for what it's worth-- I could be wrong.

There's a Donald Gregory on FB from CA.
He appears about the same age. I wonder if that's him?

I have found while searching newspapers that it's a really common name. I still can't find anything about the circumstances of his disappearance.

<modsnip>

I did find this, it appears to be a death notice for his mother,

Rae E. Gregory, 65, of Banning, passed away on Oct. 26.

Born on October 26, 1941 in Culver City, she was an office manager with Crown Valley Foods for 10 years.

Gregory was a member of the San Gorgonio Pass congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses.

She was preceded in death by her son, Donald James Geddes.

Are you able to submit this as a possible match??
I'll probably never get round to it, but perhaps you can submit?
@MadMcGoo?! Perhaps you can help us here, I have only submitted a match once.

Do you have any contacts for submitting a match for Donald James Gregory (Geddes Jr?)
with the John Doe @cheemsg has posted?

I can be the person that submits it if needed but someone more experienced like yourself might have better luck doing it correctly or getting it in front of the right people.

Is @othram involved in submitting matches to be checked out?

Thanks to all of you doing the work and making the matches!!!

I think you just need to email NamUs with the match but they never respond tbh. I guess since they're from the same county he might have already been ruled out? @Myrrh is he ruled out?

This is the most convenient and straightforward way I’ve found to submit a potential match (aside from calling the agencies directly, but I’m not always comfortable doing that). The Doe Network has always been very responsive to my submissions. If their panel doesn’t feel it’s worth submitting or can’t for some other reason, they’ll tell me as much. I can decide at that point if I’m confident enough in the match to contact the agency myself. I’ll usually hear back from Doe Net if my submission has previously been submitted to LE and/or previously excluded.

I encourage anyone interested in submitting a potential match to try this method at least once. If not, I’m happy to submit on your behalf!

Thank you @MadMcGoo ! I will look at that link. I can't remember who I submitted that other match to but they did respond that they had received my submission. I also sent that one to a local ME hoping he would get it to the right place but I never heard anything either way.

He isn't; in fact, the John Doe has no rule outs
