CA - Dozens Missing in Southern California Mudslides, January 2018

I just found this thread.

these mudslides feel even worse than the fires ... when it comes you have little-to-no chance getting out of its way. The videos are so frightening.

The terrible thing is many of us in Southern California knew it was coming. We had really horrible slides in that region previously with whole neighborhoods gone and a dozen buried alive. https://www.google.com/amp/www.sand...rows-mudslides-bring-2014mar24-story,amp.html

And that one wasn't fire related. So this time, when we watched the fires, the first thing I thought of was mudslides when the rains came. And the news repeatedly mentioned, once the storm was forecast, the danger of these mudslide floods. As a result, I fully expected everyone to evacuate the area.

Yesterday in the paper survivors were quoted as saying they didn't think it would be that bad, or that they were tired of evacuations because of the fires so they ignored the voluntary evacuations. One lady on the radio said that her elderly neighbors were not under mandatory evacuation and they were only feet from her house which was, and they didn't leave so she and her family couldn't understand how one house was under voluntary evacuation and next door, just feet away, was mandatory, so they just decided to stay. Her family got out at the last minute. They left the dogs which made me so sad. But she was in a separate car from most of her family and wound up having to get out and became somehow stranded, and holding on to a tree for dear life as the mud and water swirled around her.

She had her phone and family was able to drive nearby and alert firefighters who rescued her.

I am shocked out of my shoes at how many people failed to flee. They survived the fires only to die because they decided not to evacuate?

How did this happen?

it really upsets me when some people leave their pets behind
it affects my empathy for the humans
I hope there are no more fatalities - animal or human

I was really upset by that too. That might seem awful to say in light of the loss of so much human life but they're living beings too and utterly dependent on us. At least open the door and give them a chance to run!

But what really struck me with that lady on the radio is her excuses of disregarding the evacuation orders made no sense. And it's one thing to make that decision for yourself but for your dependent kids or animals?

But I do think we need better alert systems than phones. I'm not sure why we can't have tsunami/air raid sirens set up in flood or fire prone areas.

Of course then they'd actually have to be used. There apparently were such sirens up north during the fires and the seismometer was made to not use them and cause panic. Ugh.

But in this case we have received warnings about the mudslide/flood danger for five whole days before it happened. And based on the past events I'm so stunned so many people were still caught in this.

I guess in 10 years there will be a repeat performance. Maybe it's only crazy people like me who remember such events!

[h=1]California Mudslide Death Toll at 18 as Search for Missing Continues[/h]
The death toll resulting from mudslides that devastated a California town has climbed to 18 as rescue crews continued to search Saturday for seven people who are still missing, amid diminishing hope that survivors would be found.
The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office issued a plea to the public to provide information about the missing people, while acknowledging that finding survivors would be a "miracle."
As rescuers continued to dig through mud, rocks and flattened homes, Sheriff Bill Brown said crews found the 18th victim, 87-year-old Joseph Bleckel, in his Romero Canyon-area home late Friday morning.
The number of missing has fluctuated widely after heavy rains unleashed a fury of devastation.

[h=1]Harsh reality of mudslides setting in as 40+ still missing[/h]
Friday, January 12, 2018, 9:42 AM - The search for survivors from a devastating Southern California mudslide that has killed at least 17 people moved into its third day on Friday, with some 700 rescue workers expecting to find more dead victims.

Triggered by heavy rains, the massive slide struck before dawn on Tuesday, when a wall of mud and debris cascaded down hillsides that were denuded last month by wildfires, including the Thomas Fire, the largest blaze in the state's history.

"Realistically we suspect we are going to have the discovery of more people killed in this incident," Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown said at a Thursday news briefing, adding that he was hoping to find "miracle" survivors.
Brown said 43 people remain missing, although some may just be out of communication.

[h=1]Seven people still missing in mudslide aftermath[/h]
Seven people are still unaccounted for after violent mudslides devastated the city of Montecito last week, according to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office.

Reported by family and friends to the Emergency Operations Center and Santa Barbara County Public Safety Dispatch Center, the missing individuals lived in and around the affected areas and have not been found despite heavy search and rescue operations.

Not sure which number is correct at this point but both of these are updated articles for today. I hope it is really only 7, but even that is too many missing :(
I will do separate posts for each of the missing named in above article.

Thanks, I will post in the technical problems forum. I even did a system restore back to two days ago (thinking it was my computer) and it did not fix the problem.

[h=1]Death toll rises to 19 in California mudslides, five still missing[/h]
One missing person was found alive on Saturday but chances were dwindling fast that more survivors could still be located from the 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 of mud and debris that struck on Tuesday, said Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown.

“While every hour it remains less likely we’ll find anyone alive, there remains hope,” he said at a news conference.
Brown said a 19th victim had been found and named her as Morgan Corey, 25. Her 12-year-old sister Sawyer had previously been discovered dead after their home was swept away this week.
