You would think that the authorities would have attempted to DNA phenotype the suspect, particularly since the composites of him all seem to be different. After all, he left plenty of DNA samples for them to work with. At least if they did that, it would give us an idea of what he actually looked like, rather than relying on witness memories of what someone who could possibly have been the EAR may have looked like.....

Snipped by me...
I don't know exactly when law enforcement started to believe EAR/ONS was connected with the Maggiore murders. (It's still debated whether the connection is real, but let's assume so.)
I think some LE believed right away, but my guess is they did a DNA test on the shoelaces found at the scene and the rest came along. My other guess is that DNA was done just before the FBI announcement of the reward/case renewal.

FBI used the Maggiore and Ripton composites for the wanted poster. They seem pretty confident that EAR committed these crimes.

As we know, in the "Mad is the Word" journal entry passage the EAR writes:

I wish I had know what was going to be going on during my 6th grade year, the last and worst years of elementary school. Mad is the word that remains in my head about my dreadful year as a 6th grader.... Disappointment wasn't the only reason that made me mad in my sixth grade class, another was getting in trouble at school especially talking thats what really bugged me was writing sentences, those awful sentence that my teacher made me write, hours and hours I'd sit and write 50-100-150 sentence day and night I write those dreadful paragraphs which embarrassed me ...

-----------------------------------
I feel that this case can be cracked!! Somewhere in Ca. is there a person (or a number of people) whose sixth grade white male classmate got in trouble (sometimes for talking in class) to the point of been forced to write numerous sentences. Anyone who was a student in a class where the teacher may have broken promises regarding a field trip and one individual child was singled out, should think about that kid who used to get in trouble in sixth grade. I really feel there are a number of individuals out there, still alive who would have been in 6th grade with the EAR. I wonder what year the EAR was a sixth grader.

If the individual who sent in the poem "Excitements Crave" was indeed the EAR then it stands to reason that the troubled male student attended school in or around Sacramento, CA and would probably be well known as a troubled student.

There was an asian teacher Mr. S, who taught in the 60s. He used to make his students write lines when they misbehaved and cancel field trips.

Here's an interesting thread about it:

Still thinking about Jan's post. I think its the real deal folks.

Curious as to why she hasn't gotten back to us to follow up. I have to wonder; was this such a crucial tip that she was instructed to keep quiet about it for now, as to not interfere with any future arrests? I just have a feeling that the pieces are coming together behind the scenes right now, and things are quiet in order to keep the perp in the dark, and to not "spook" him. I wouldn't be surprised if an arrest were to occur in the next year or two.

Australian police had already zeroed in on Bradley Edwards, the Claremont Serial Killer, a full year before the arrest. They kept very quiet about any news or breaks in the case until after the arrest. My gut tells me that the same thing could be happening with this case right now.

Do you have an MSM link for the year long link to BE in the Claremont case? Thanks.

Hi,

New to forum. I've just spent all weekend listening to all 5 of the casefile podcasts on this case and am intrigued. A few gaps in the podcast stand out to me though, and I was wondering if someone could fill me in on the following points.

- Someone called a counselling clinic claiming to be the EAR and requested help, said he wanted to stop what he was doing. The caller claimed that he'd been receiving counselling for years as well. Were police able to investigate for potential matching patients with other counsellors in the area? Was anything else related to this call followed up?

- If the EAR did in fact stop around 1986, and assuming the EAR did suffer from some sort of mental illness. were any medications or therapies introduced around that time that could have allowed this killer to start taking control of his urges and abstain from committing any more crimes?

- The podcast mentions that some witnesses recalled the killer had blue eyes while some recalled he had hazel colored eyes. Is there any explanation for this conflicting information?

Thanks.

I think only one victim saw his eyes closeup.
She noticed he had blue eyes. Lifeless, like a doll’s eyes, they stared at her.
http://www.thequesterfiles.com/night_predator_--_ear_ons_--__.html

It's hard to see in the dark, so other victims could have mistaken his eye color. Same with his hair. Some victims said it was blonde, some said it was brown.

I seriously doubt EAR had any mental illness, other than being a sociopath/psychopath. He was so methodical and put a lot effort into his crimes (scouting, prowling, hang-up calls etc). Someone with serious mental illness wouldn't have been as successful as he was.

One of the most interesting details of this case is that almost every rape victim described the EAR's penis as noticeably small. I find it gratifying that LE chose to make the EAR's teeny weeny public.

Welcome to Ws sketchboy!
LE might find releasing that particular tidbit gratifying as well!

Hi Kon, good questions. I'm sure the first one is covered a bit in either Larry Crompton's book "Sudden Terror", or Richard Shelby's "Hunting a Psycopath". I think it's in Shelby's book. No sure about the other two. In any case, if you're not familiar with them, both books are fascinating reads and, as far as I can tell, quite a bit of the podcast is drawn from them. And keep those questions coming, this case can always use a fresh set of eyes!

Looking into Jan's suspect, this guy sounds like he was a medical courier. Are there any reports of work van or delivery-type vehicles associated with any of the ONS/EAR attacks?

Suspicious vehicles do include some work vans, with windowed double doors in the back. One witness was very sure the taillights were vertical, which is unique to the Ford Econoline, but as usual with eyewitnesses, descriptions vary.

Is there any way to know if this model of vehicle was ever used by medical couriers in California around that time?

I think looking for vehicles could be a dead end. There were so many different ones and most probably had nothing to do with EAR/ONS. He used bikes and walked. When he did drive he would park away from the homes, so no one could tie his vehicle to the scene.
