"The former cop accused of being California's Golden State Killer has been cleared of murdering a 14-year-old girl found strangled, beaten and stabbed 17 times.

DNA found that Joseph DeAngelo, 73, was not responsible for the death of Donna Jo Richmond after she vanished cycling home from a friend's house near Exeter in 1975....

DeAngelo's arrest last year prompted prosecutors to review the original conviction of sex offender Oscar Clifton.

Carpenter and painter Clifton was sentenced to life in prison for the kidnapping, attempted rape and murder of Donna.

He had always maintained his innocence and died in prison in 2013.

But District Attorney Tim Ward said: 'I am again confident, just as this office was the previous times we reviewed the case, that the countless hours of report analysis, evidence evaluation, court transcripts, and DNA evaluation solidifies that Oscar Clifton tragically and violently ended the life of Donna Jo Richmond in an orange grove the day after Christmas in 1975.'

A partial DNA profile, developed from semen on the teenager's body, was consistent with Clifton's profile but not that of DeAngelo...."

Her nude body was found over a week later in the Friant-Kern Canal near Woodlake – an area located northeast of Visalia and a fair distance away from where she’d disappeared. Her bra was wrapped around one of her wrists, and her clothing was found on the bank nearby....

Recently, the Sun-Gazette has reported that Joseph DeAngelo, the man arrested for the Visalia Ransacker / Golden State Killer crimes, has been added to the suspect list. The Rolling Stone article says JJD lost weight, and the photo shows him looking way skinnier than when they caught him. Anyone know why?

Could it be, that we have not been informed that he is extremely ill?

I'd say regardless if your guilty or not being in the spotlight, jail, and possible mental illness takes a toll. Then again I kind of wonder if being in the wheelchair is all an act and stuff is all an act. They were saying right before they nailed him, he was running around like a 40 or 50 year old.

I think you are correct in thinking it's all an act- it's like the glasses that the defense puts on the murderer's face- a con, IMO. On women, to look like a librarian, and on men, to look like an intellectual dork....

A California man has been arrested in connection to rapes committed in the 1990s after his DNA was linked to the crime scenes through commercial genealogy websites, which initially turned up both the suspect and his twin, police said on Friday.
Kevin Konther, 53, was taken into custody on Thursday at his home in Southern California and booked on suspicion of rape, kidnapping and child sexual abuse, Orange County Sheriff's spokeswoman Carrie Braun said. One of the victims was nine years old at the time of the attack.

Konther was identified as a suspect by sheriff's detectives using techniques similar to those used in recent years to help solve a number of older crimes. Last year, a 73-year-old former police officer was arrested over the 'Golden State Killer' string of murders and rapes across California in the 1970s and 1980s.
In investigating the 1990s rapes, which were committed in Orange County, investigators working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation compared DNA samples collected at two crime scenes to that found on the websites used by consumers to trace their ancestry, Braun said.

Detectives use the sites to follow the family trees of matches, seeking blood relatives who roughly fit the profile of the suspected criminal.

Both Konther and his twin brother were taken into custody on Thursday before investigators identified Konther as the suspect and released his brother, who has not been publicly identified, Braun said. She declined to name the website used or the family member whose DNA led to the suspect.
Konther was being held in lieu of $1 million bail pending an initial court appearance scheduled for Monday, where he will be arraigned on two counts of felony rape, oral copulation on a child under the age of 14, lewd and lascivious acts on a child under 14 and aggravated sexual assault.
