CA CA - East Area Rapist/Golden State Killer *ARREST*

Yes these concerns is why familial dna comparison is not legal in some states.
Technology has outpaced the legislation and it's going to take a while for the laws to catch up to this uncharted territory.

Yes, that is why I think they used familial DNA to build a family tree to determine who fit the age and location. Then retrieved the discarded DNA for testing before making an arrest. The familial DNA could be disputed but the discarded DNA is the “gotcha!”

Has anyone asked LE whether the $50,000 reward will be given to someone?

I’m curious about where he and the wife traveled for their honeymoon or any where else they vacationed before or after having children. I read at least one daughter lives out of state...did he ever visit there? Did he travel for fishing trips?

I think it will come out that he was involved in more crimes than the ones we currently know about.

That’s exactly the feeling I got since the press conference yesterday.

I once worked in a business that was robbed. Every description that each employee gave the police was different in some respect. Heart-pounding fear will do that.

I have green eyes that have flecks of brown, gold and blue in them. Sometimes people complement my blue eyes, green eyes, hazel eyes. Depends on the lighting and my mood and I guess people's perception of color. His eyes look similar in his booking photo. Also, your eyes change color as you age. I'm sure they were brighter and clearer when he was young and when he was excited and full of adrenaline.

I predicted he would be of Italian descent back in 2016 so wasn't surprised at all by his very Italian name Joseph DeAngelo.

AKA reverse engineering, and I believe you are likely correct. Law enforcement has been suspected of using reverse engineering for evidence for quite a while. Most notably in the case of taking down the Silk Road mastermind. It was somewhat tested legally then and it is doubtful that it is a useful source of contention.

Watching the "Unmasked" special on HLN last night, one of the investigators said that once the FBI got involved, it opened up the investigation considerably. Assume this happened as a result of the recent publicity from Michelle's activity. The FBI does seem to have the skills and ability to really help coordinate LE agencies in these kinds of investigations. Makes me wish they would spend even more time and resources on this kind of work.

Either the HLN one or the ID one has an episode called "Somebody knows something". Makes me think they got what they wanted; someone sitting on long held information came forward.

I still can't get over all of the witness testimony stating he had blonde or light brown hair and hazel or blue eyes when he looked nothing like that. How is this possible so many witnesses/victims got this wrong? Even the police sketches do not resemble him at all!

Because eyewitness identifications are GROSSLY unreliable and always have been. When witnesses sit down with a sketch artist, sometimes they describe the artist himself. It is unconscionable the way personal identifications have been -- and continue to be -- admitted as evidence.

I've never put any stock in those drawings, absolutely none at all.

I'm honestly really surprised no one recognized this guy. Especially with his temper. I have to wonder if this was one of those "open secrets" among certain people, as crazy as that sounds.

Maybe everyone knew he was an ******* but he never committed a crime worth arresting over? or the neighbors were too afraid to create an enemy by calling the cops?
Kinda scared to set him off. Hostage by being stuck as his neighbor.

I wonder if the partial profile from Zodiac has been dropped in.

Ancestry.com produces a transparency report each year with regard to law enforcement. 2015 - 2017 they had not received requests for any DNA. They had received one request in 2014.

https://www.ancestry.com.au/cs/transparency

2017 report: We received no requests for information related to genetic information of any Ancestry member, and we did not disclose any such information to law enforcement."

Will be interesting to see the 2018 report.

I do not have the link but I BELIEVE that you are correct and that they also tied that gun to the killing of Professor Snelling by returning to the scene of the shooting of a CA police officer. The confirmation that those bullets matched the Snelling shooting tied it all together with the Visalia Ransacker.

Okay.....I do have something of a link. I hate to post quickly without confirmation but here is more of the story and explains it better than I can.

Thanks, that's a very good article.

These characteristics include:

In all cases, the perpetrator was described as having medium-length brown hair, standing about 5 feet, 10 inches, weighing about 180 pounds and wearing a size 9 shoe.
In at least four counties, the criminal rode a stolen bicycle.
He liked to steal jewelry, guns, piggy banks and Blue Chip stamp books.
He often wore a ski mask.
He used a special diamond knot to tie his victims. That could indicate a military background.

If he's definitively linked to these crimes as well, it's pretty staggering. This guy was a very, very active killer. When did he find time to work at his job? He was obsessive and obviously got a great deal of satisfaction from committing these crimes.

100 percent agree!

Yup! All when I am largely convinced it was Michelle's book, the podcasts and TV specials that led to a renewed interest and likely got the tipster to make a call. JD not on any list for 40 plus years and then just shows up 6 days ago? Hmmmm.

Intensified media presence pulled it out of a cold case. Maybe a person watching called in a tip?

Having a dog and a CrimSafe screen on my patio door helps me feel safe.
CrimSafe screen is "criminal safe" and dog-proof, too.
No more replacing $99 flimsy screen patio sliders.

well worth the money...I've seen ''many'' security videos on burglars going through doors easily
the usual burglar does not want to invade an occupied dwelling--where as the serial killer obviously does

Didn't get much sleep I guess. It is shocking how prolific of a criminal he was. Also, another reason I'm not surprised he slowed down or stopped completely as he had children and became Middle aged. What he was doing was physically demanding even by his late 40's jumping across rooftops and fences would have been increasingly difficult. He did a great deal of running, jumping and climbing.

Either the HLN one or the ID one has an episode called "Somebody knows something". Makes me think they got what the want; someone sitting on long held information coming forward.

In our home, we fondly refer to that podcast as "Nobody Knew Anything (Relevant)."

What a development. Really thought this one was headed for Zodiac/Ripper territory over on Unsolved Island.

Thanks, that's a very good article.

when you are young, you can go without much sleep--I was in the USMC for 8 years and 4 of them on guard duty....we sometimes went 3 days with very little sleep
..also when we went on field exercises, we would get very little sleep
..a lot of us would drink/get drunk -off duty of course--then the captain would schedule us to run the next morning on our off day at some civilian 10k/etc!!! ..after not much sleep
..and some of these Marines could run fast after a night of drinking/hangover/little sleep
..one of our best runners would be ''constantly hungover''/not much sleep for our runs
..plus--doesn't the adrenaline keep the serial killer awake/going/etc?
so he can commit the crimes off duty
obviously all of these serial killers find the time..

now-I would be a little ''woozy'' after not much sleep--but that would take a lot of nights with little sleep --take time
after a night of not much sleep, we could do a lot--go far
bold for emphasis only

Unless they knew (which I doubt) I genuinely feel bad for his kids and grandkids, They didn't ask for this. Completely flips their world on multiple levels. Sad.

someone here or on reddit mentioned that one of the sketches of the Visalia Ransacker is actually a sketch of a man who was outside on the sidewalk walking by like 15 mins after JJDJ left and he was subsequently ruled out by police.
iffy things those sketches, generic and sometimes witnesses' perceptions can be skewed bc of extreme stress.
