I still think she drowned or was attacked by sharks. She may have gone for a swim to ease her panic attack or overwhelming feelings of hopelessness. From dusk to dawn, that is the time when sharks feed at Malibu. I recently found that is the most dangerous time to swim there and Elaine may not have known that. Also, the way she stacked everything so neatly in the back seat of her car, leaving the keys in the ignition. No suicide note, but that may have been her way of flipping off her mother one last time, if suicide was her intention. They had a very toxic relationship, judging by their texts to each other.
