So terribly sad :(

I'm not familiar with that exact area - could a teen of his size went down there willingly and got injured? Or did someone"put" him down there? we really won't know just yet what the cause of death was but I'm just curious, is it at all feasible that this was accidental?

I'm definitely leaning towards this being accidental. In the live interview with the police captain he mentioned friends of Elias confirmed his normal route home was to shortcut near the wash. Due to the heavy storm I could see where he could have easily slipped and got washed away. I couldn't find the full live clip with the police captain but he said the river was full of debris from the storm and on Friday the river was raging at up to 70mph.

^^ I agree.

I'd definitely guess accidental.

We constantly have people getting swept away - some rescued in time, some not - because of misjudging water depth / feasibility to cross safely / getting stuck somewhere when water rose quickly, etc.

And with as much rain as we've had, it's even worse than usual because it's taken less and less rain or water flow to get to that point.

We're about to get hit with yet another storm and it would have prolonged things even further had they not been able to recover the body as (relatively) quickly as they did today - plus of course had it not happened before this storm, could have meant it ending up elsewhere and of course however many additional days before it may have been spotted somewhere else.

For those who aren't following all the SoCal media and stringer twitter updates, media has been tweeting pics / updates about ER's family being on scene basically since as soon as they were notified about a body being found.

Including just this one from when they were apparently leaving.

This is so terribly sad, my heart goes out to that handsome young man's family, especially his mom.
If there is anything good about this tragic outcome, it is that it appears to have been an accidental death, as opposed to other horrible scenarios.

This is so heartbreaking. Looking at his picture jut kills me. He is such a handsome, sweet looking young man. I hope it doesn't affect his Mother's fragile health. This is the worst thing that could ever happen to her. My prayers are with her...RIP Young Elias...:rose:

UGH :( I was hoping they'd find him alive (of course, we all were). Rest in peace, sweet boy.

It was minutes after I wrote that if he drowned they'd find him
soon because all the water in the area has receded, that someone posted about a body being found.
Poor baby. Just a sweet kid. And his family! This is very tragic. What a waste.

So, were flood waters right up at the road where people normally walk? Or did he have to purposefully go to the flooded area?

I just ask because if this flooding happens regularly as noted by locals above, why are safety measures not in place? This sounds like a very dangerous place to live.

He would have had to purposely go down to the water. The police captain said a lot of the students cut across the wash as a shortcut. It's not normally flooded at all because we've been in a drought, but this winter we've gotten hit with major storms that have caused the flash flooding. Especially that Friday was the worst of it. I believe it's the most rain we've gotten in six years so it's not a particularly dangerous place to be under normal circumstances.

I'm glad someone linked an article with pictures because I'm not from that area and not familiar with this at all. I had so many questions but seeing some images helped answer some of them.
I can now totally see how tempting it would be to cut thru it for a teen boy.
I've had boys that age and know mine would've attempted to go through it instead of going around or using the walkway.
This is such a heartbreaking case:(
I hope this really was just an accident.

Sadly, because we so seldom have rains of this magnitude, it's VERY tempting to young people. I can't tell you how many swift water rescues I've watched live on the news. These kids/teens aren't really exposed to these conditions all that often and the force of rushing water is overpowering. It's truly heartbreaking.

I'm trying to understand what happened to Elias here.
Was he swimming in the river and got swept away with the current?
Suicide or a horrible accident?

The rains that day were absolutely horrendous...he was probably trying to cross the wash which is normally not full, but that day with all the rain was really bad, and slipped...it was a horrible accident
