This is a hard one, to know what to do. Once the error was discovered, the babies were switched back. Both families are suing, and heartbroken. I'd be interested to hear about how this happened - it seems unlikely it was purposeful. Kind of falls under the umbrella of "humans make mistakes".

Saw a segment about this on the news. On the plus side, each of the babies seems to be of just one of the 2 couples.

Both babies appear healthy, too. Obviously there could be long-ranging difficulties!

When the story started, I was afraid that the switch happened prior to fertilization, creating babies genetically related to both families.

Also -- do we resident skeptics think this is the first time for a mistake of this type?

In the article, it references a case where this has happened before. But I agree - it's likely it's happened other times, and who would know? Unless you have a case like this, where apparently the baby was a different racial background, who would guess it wasn't your biological child?

Once they get old enough and put their info in some genealogy thing.

You'd never guess. You want a biological baby bad enough who would pay mind?

My dad used to go with me to HUP for fertility treatment for years. He'd scan the waiting area, and say "Ace there's a great chance of human error here. What if you get that couple's baby?"
