The fact that the husband's whereabouts on that day has not been reported is very interesting to me, too...

:waitasec:

I think we concluded that the military asked that the husband not speak to the media about the investigation.

Maybe hubby was working that night or on duty and that's why he didn't report it until the morning because he didn't know she hadn't been home.

If she was at the park maybe someone (a stranger) harmed her there and drove the car to where it was found. Maybe it was a coincidence that they drove it near the base where she lives?

Or deliberate, to cast suspicions towards the marine base?

Erin's mom told media her son in law told her he was aware that Erin had not come home.

ETA: Erin's mom also told media she has no suspicions about her son in law at all.

Maybe, but that would not prevent LE from saying that husband's whereabouts have been satisfactorily verified, Imo.

I was thinking that with all this going on, they may have confined him to base too, so he couldn't speak to media even if he wanted to disobey orders.

LE has provided the media with no updates, no press conferences, NOTHING.

I think some of those can already be excluded if we take what mom says she's been told by husband as accurate. That he thought Erin might have stayed at 'the ranch' overnight, so that's why he didn't notify LE straightaway.

That indicates he was aware she hadn't come home
Was aware of where she was going
That she hadn't indicated she'd definitely be staying away overnight
He wasn't paralyzed by fear

In my opinion.

Erin's mom made it appear the phrase was vague, and it didn't appear that Erin's mom could make a lot of sense about the statement of "the ranch". She certainly didn't follow up with what ranch it was and that it was rational to think she was there. I think it's possible that his mind glommed on to something that's not really even a possibility, out of fear of unknowing. The family themselves seem to be doing that too - coming up with irrational ways she might still be safe and sound.

I've been following this thread and I find it hard to believe this beautiful young woman went to JT to find trails.

Bad sense of direction is not a joke out in these elements. And she was supposedly alone. Now that her car has been found and homicide detectives are on the case, she may have gone to JT but not of her own free will. Jmo
Good link about JT hiking trails, campgrounds, activities. Jmo

ciao
Just jumping off your post...

and... FWIW...

From my experience of visiting Joshua Tree National Park...and I am someone who is challenged in directions, too...

driving to and through this Park is not a difficult endeavor....

Getting to the park from the base is pretty much a straight shot from the base to one of the multiple entrances....

The road is a well paved road with many signs giving directions, etc....

and should someone take a wrong turn inside the park... It is not difficult to turn to the correct direction...

furthermore... Even if one does get turned around... Most roads lead to a entrance/exit to the park...

However... If someone gets out of the car... And follows some of the less well marked trails... Getting lost can be a great possibility...

All... JMO...

The search for Corwin continued into the holiday weekend with over 30 search and rescue volunteers on the ground and a sheriff''s department helicopter in the air.

The search has covered a vast area of more than 2,000 square miles.

"They're so remote...It's taking us entirely too long to get in to specific areas that we're targeting," said Captain Dale Monday, San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.

One of the locations being searched is Joshua Tree National Park were Corwin was reportedly on her way to last Saturday morning but never returned.

Investigators have said that if they find any new information or any leads to Corwin's whereabouts, they will hold a press conference.

I've read through the messages up to here and one (of many) questions comes to mind if anyone knows the answers to.

Where the car was found is stated as near the base entrance. Was it within walking distance to anything? Where I'm going is Bad thing happened in the park and bad guy drove car back to civilization. Walk back on base? Or maybe mass transportation stop within walking distance from where car was left?

She was 5'2". Was the driver's seat rammed forward? (Take it from a guy that is married to a 5'2 girl) It'll be moved up if she's driving last. Being pregnant would mean the seat may be leaned back but I'd bet it was scooted forward to reach the pedals.

If the car left in the dirt/sand, any tracks from the driver's side of the person leaving the car. Military boots vs girls flip flops or tennis shoes.

Though lurking for a few years, this is my first post. Has a timeline been drawn up yet?

:welcome: Looker!

It seems within the realm of possibility that she made it to the park, got out to look around a bit and left the car running and it was jacked and then abandoned. Seems unlikely, but that could be one reason LE is looking for her in the park when her car is no longer there.

I think that has about a 1% chance of being the case.

As I mentioned very early on in this thread, when I was in Joshua Tree a few years ago in July, I didn't turn the car off if I could avoid it. Leaving the AC running was the only way to make the interior of the car comfortable (and even then the inside of the car was probably 85-90 degrees, but I'm a delicate New England flower, so I'm not used to heat the way someone who lived in 29 Palms would be.) so your theory definitely has some merit.

Also, military families get a free annual pass to Joshua Tree, so she wouldn't be paying fees.

(PS Treelights, nice spotting, and I do remember you catching me last year. I figure anyone who catches it will get a smile in the middle of all this tragedy.)

You worded this better than I...

I was just thinking that if a stranger harmed her they wouldn't know she's a military spouse that lived on base.

Would there not be a base sticker on her car?

I know Air Force bases do not do sticker decals anymore. Not sure about Marines though. Just a thought.

  • #498
Since her husband was overseas while they were married and she was back in Oak Ridge, it's also possible she had some sort of "I <3 my Marine" or similar supportive bumper sticker.

This is unrelated, but how do you get on a base without a sticker? I was an air force brat, and we had stickers and the base guard would just wave us in with the sticker. Do they check IDs coming and going?

They check ID's at the gate going into the base.
