I am somewhat familiar with this area and lemme ttell you - it is desolate! And a person can be out there for hours and not see a soul. I wonder if any satellites could see something, though? IIRC, the air is still clear in those parts. I haven't been there in 15 years, however.

Oh, it's desolate and creepy outside of town. Abandoned houses. An abandoned highway (Route 66). Abandoned hotels. Driving into 29 Palms from Route 66/I-40 it can feel like you're the only person on earth and you can see a long long way. Let me see if I can dig up some photos of the abandoned "settlement" between Route 66 and 29 Palms, it looked as if the people just vaporized. I hope they've searched that area. Lots of places to hide or be hidden up there.

Mostly I was voicing my disgust for the people on the Facebook page and just thinking out loud about what could have happened. I thought this was a safe environment to do that. I guess not. I'll save the "sappy" stuff for elsewhere.

Don't let others tell you what to say or not say (like I'm trying to do - lol!), unless what you're suggesting is against TOS. I'm very sensitive (cuz I know I'm a good egg :blushing:) and don't like when someone is passive-aggressive in the way they communicate. So, I've had to toughen up around here. The suggestion I've heard is to scroll and roll by posts when we don't like them when they're not hurting anybody.

This is a crime board so obviously conversations get ugly (topics that are distasteful) a lot. Oh, I see you're not a newbie, but still.

OT, kind of, I read a true crime book called "29 Palms" some years ago and this town for sure had a sleazy side, at least in the nineties. Jmo

I am ashamed, I must admit, that it's taken me this long but I've only just now done the legwork on where the car was in relation to her departure location and her intended destination and WOW is it ever an eye opener.

The car was found at the intersection of Valle Vista Rd and Ranch Rd, which corresponds to 75099 Valle Vista Road. The google map search: " 75099 Valle Vista Road, Twentynine Palms, CA, United States " will take you straight there.

It is by all accounts the middle of NOWHERE.

This location is Appx. :

-4.5 miles North East of the main cross streets of 29 palms
-1.5 miles North of the closest suburb of 29 palms proper

The main cross streets (intersection) of 29 palms are themselves Appx. 20 miles North West of Joshua Tree National Park

Doing the math we see that her car was parked at least 2 miles in the opposite direction of travel from her home to her supposed intended destination, which put it in excess of 23 miles from same supposed intended destination.

It is clear that searching for her in Joshua Tree National Park is a fools errand at worst, at best it's a clever but also pathetic ruse to thwart a suspects suspicion.

(an article I just read pointed out that the military base might be the subdivision to the north west so it might not be the opposite direction after all, however since she would have passed Utah Trail by a kilometer or so to get to ranch rd and that is the only road into Joshua Tree National Park from the north, it still seems unlikely she was headed in that direction.)

Wow, that is really in the middle of nowhere! :(

Did you happen to see the strange thing in the sky on the google image? What is that??

Understood, but I think we've been pretty good with the 'if trues' and such. We didn't run rampant with the alleged boyfriend idea until it was reported in the media, upon which Salem gave us the go ahead to speculate/sleuth. Even then we aren't accepting it as fact, but only as a credible source in which to discuss.

Again, I shouldn't have used the word 'sappy'. I can see how that could be misconstrued as judging. Not my intent.

Salem gave the go ahead? My bad, I didn't see that post. There's probably a small chunk of posts I haven't read. Go figure! Well, do I get an E for effort for trying to help the mods? (This reminds me of why I usually try to stay out of this role, but feel weird when I do because I've been around this long.)

Sap away, and this IS a safe place to express yourself. I liked your post!!

Scroll and roll, as I was told many moons ago :loser:

People who care get passionate, whether it is about being passionate or being dispassionate. Snipping at each other is going to happen because we all want this young woman to be found safe or if the worst has happened to be found and have justice done. If we didn't care about what happens/happened to Erin, we wouldn't be so invested. It's bound to happen from time to time, and frankly, I think it's a good thing in a weird way. It keeps us thinking and talking about the missing.

Now back to trying to figure out how to upload pictures of the buildings I'm talking about north of 29 Palms.

And don't drive Route 66 in the middle of the night, listening to that radio station that always discusses Aliens, conspiracy theories, etc. Aye, Aye, Aye......

Let's discuss the case and not each other. :tyou:

:gathering:

Just seeing this now! I can't go by my gut around here, that's for sure. I thought we were heading towards a shut-down.

I know right? It does have a bit of a Close Encounters Of The Third Kind feel to it. I think maybe it's just the angle of sunlight hitting the multiple lenses and a light filtration setting that didn't anticipate the sun's intensity or something. Who knows.

The Google Street camera is mounted on top of the vehicle, and there might be a plastic covering in case of bad weather that causes light from the sun to do weird things. I see a solid bright line in the sky right there. There's also a stitching together of images, and you get a point where they all come together ("apex"?). If you look straight up it usually looks weird.

Good thought! Shouldn't the military be able to do that? (satellite images I mean)

So what do you all think, was the SBSO press release a result of the story today?

I kind of got that feeling. Especially after, what, 8 days?
ETA: 8 days since last update, that is.

I've always liked abandoned places. I look online at abandoned theme park pics, and old sanitariums, cemeteries etc. The way this sounds is creepier than I may like. Now with this going on with Erin, I may rethink my curiosity. I am not morbid~~

Any and all of my angst and anger about people's behavior was limited to the FB page. Those pages always devolve, sadly. I want to yell at them to straighten up, but then I'd be just as bad on a family page. I'm glad others here share that sentiment. Sleuthers tend to be kind and mature and thoughtful. More people should take a cue from WS behavior. :)
