Me too and there has been nothing new that's happened to get the thread open again. Bryce's case haunts me.

I still think about Bryce every single day. I just can't imagine what happened to him.

Me, too. There has been a bit of a flurry with reported sightings lately but nothing has panned out, sadly. I hope one day we will hear that he has been found safe.

I couldn't have answered this nearly as well as Voice did. Excellent job, Voice! Thank you.

Thank you, la2cabo. I think we are on the same page when it comes to the mines. :)

Because of this case I have researched the mines in and around the Joshua Tree area. I discovered that there are 288 mines with 747 mine openings in Joshua Tree alone and hundreds of other abandoned mines in close proximity to the Joshua Tree area. Approximately 120 mine sites in JT (as of July of this year) have "substantial openings" that would be extremely dangerous if entered. The mines range in size, depth, distance from main roads and size of opening. Some are 50' deep while others are hundreds of feet deep.

Here are some photos of a mine opening in JT with a 270' drop inside (http://www.undergroundexplorers.com/ivanhoe1.htm) and some more examples of different mine openings found in JT:

Also, a few threads back I posted a photo of a very large vertical mine opening that a car could have fit in.

JT has been in the process of sealing off mine openings to prevent people from going in. A lot of the mines are covered in a metal grates to allow wildlife to continue to use the mines (bats, rats, etc) but prevent people from entering. From some of the photos I have seen it appears as though it would be pretty easy to remove some of the older grates/bars if one wanted to enter a covered mine. On the following site a woman documented her hike to one of the covered mines and you can see from her picture (approx. half way down the page) that the steel grate covering the mine appears as though it would be relatively easy to move to gain access into the mine. http://www.greeneadventures.com/201...convenient-hike-in-joshua-tree-national-park/

I am pretty certain that cameras could be (and probably have been) used to search for Erin in some of the mines in the JT area. A group, in 2010, was using cameras to search for Susan Powell in Utah's abandoned mines. One of the mines they dropped a camera in was 1,200 feet deep. They said they would continue to look for her in the other mines in the state (Utah has close to 20,000 abandoned mines!) http://www.ksl.com/index.php?sid=12748567&nid=481

There is no doubt in my mind that anyone falling into one of these mines would be greatly injured. On the slight chance they survived, they would be unable to climb out and, because of how remote so many of them are, it would be next to impossible for someone outside to hear someone calling from inside. Also, air quality would be extremely low in the depth of these mines.

Here is where I got the above information:

I thought the following was interesting about mines in JT, from the last article referenced above:

"Some find the shafts by accident, like the two Marines from Twentynine Palms who drove their Jeep into an abandoned mine known as Little Italy, located just outside Joshua Tree National Park. The passenger was killed on impact and the trapped driver ignited one of the Jeep's tires to signal for help--which came just as he died of smoke inhalation.

Another Marine rappelled into the Lost Horse Mine and came to the end of his rope far above its floor. He spent 24 hours clinging to a ledge before help came.

And then there was the rescue of the endangered desert tortoise that was found after biologists picked up a strange radio signal from its electronic collar emanating from 100 feet below ground.

"He fell into a mine," Holbeck said. "They had to go down and bring him back up."

At any rate, it gives you more of an idea of what the mines are like in Joshua Tree and the surrounding area.

This is a fantastic, fantastic post; THANK YOU VOICE!!!!!!!!!
That said, my heart sunk to my toes when I looked at these pictures. I think we can all see that LE is looking in the right place, and just seeing this makes me so mad. I pray to the mighty Angels in Heaven that they guide the searches to find this young woman's body, against all odds.
And, I wonder how many other bodies might be found in the process......

This really makes me mad. What a heinous and cowardly act. COWARDLY.

This case is slowing down, it's been over 5 hours since the last post about it.

I guess we are now waiting on LE to get all their ducks in a row, follow proper procedure and start making some arrests.
I come and read a few times a day. I don't know of anything to add since there's nothing new. It's sad, and even worse for Erin's family. Hoping for new info soon!

There is a prediction of storms coming to the area after midnight. Searches are important (including mines) but there is so much desert I think it is more likely she is buried.

FYI and JMO, People is not always a truly accurate source, in my experience. Have not read the new article, but if anything is "new" or different in it, I would be wary.
Jmo

Being on the cover of People Magazine will get Erin's picture & story out to so many people (and Alaska too).

I have become so involved in stories on Weblseuths that it will shock/amaze me when friends and family have no clue what person/story I am talking about especially if the story is not covered on NG or JVM, etc. Even if People might not be an accurate source, it will bring Erin's story to people out there who are not news watchers, etc. Just imagine the folks in Alaska standing in line at the store or picking this magazine up off the table at the nail/hair salon and reading the story out of curiousity. Who knows, maybe some new tips might come from it. I'm so happy that Erin's face and story is staying in the public eye.

Could you imagine the Lee's standing in the grocery line with Erin's face on People mag staring them in the face!

I have to say that I wouldn't know the first thing about digging in the desert. I live in an area that is considered desert (about an hour and a half from Twentynine Palms) and the ground is so hard that I have to use a pick ax to dig with. It took me 3 hours to dig a hole big enough to plant a banana tree in (best workout of my life.) We also have a lot of rocks in our soil here. Is the dirt in that area easier to dig in? I have to admit to also being completely floored as to how the perps were able to bury the McStay family where they did. I take it that it was a relatively shallow grave?

I've been watching all the Breaking Bad series where the events took place in New Mexico. Erin always comes to my mind when watching scenes filmed in the desert when they were cooking meth, etc. I have no clue if what I am seeing looks like the area where Erin lived, but it sure helps give me a perspective on the vastness of the area, the dense population and how easily one could hide a body. (btw...I have traveled through these areas, this series just makes it all real again for me even if it sounds silly.)

This is such a good point. Not many missing people get the exposure of being featured on the cover of a magazine like this. If people in Alaska weren't aware of CL's involvement (however involved he may be) before last Friday, they definitely are now. I know the obvious perp in her disappearance is CL but I am not 100% sold (almost there but still have some nagging questions.) After this exposure, I hope LE got it right going after him because if not, it is going to be hard for CL and his family to recover from having his photo attached to her disappearance and featured prominently in such a magazine.

Come to think of it, I'm kind of surprised People Magazine ran a story with CL's photo on the cover when LE hasn't even officially named him a suspect and the only person stating there even was an affair, that we know of officially, was her friend several states away.

Hopefully, as you stated, some answers will come from the added exposure.

BBM... and CL's own face looking back at him! I think they do different covers in different areas or maybe different for subscribers vs. stores, but I know the one I saw in the store yesterday had CL's picture on the cover as well. Erin and J's was the main featured pic, but his was there in one of the side photos. I can't even imagine seeing my own face on the cover of a fairly respected magazine (I know not everyone agrees, but generally I take it as more reputable than say the Enquirer, Star, Us, etc.). I also can't imagine doing anything - good or bad - that would cause me to be on the cover, so there's that, but still can you imagine going to the store and there's your photo? Wow.

Those pics....omg. Makes me think of Susan Powell too...

  • #913
The thing about Alaska is that sometimes people up there see the lower 48 as kind of 'evil.' lol There is a possibility that the People cover might make them circle the wagons and be protective of CL, thinking he is being unfairly attacked. Especially if he has lots of family up there.

Woo hoo...I didn't realize CL's pic was on the front cover!
Maybe...just maybe...this will put some added pressure/stress on things and get someone in the Lee family to talking!

This really makes me mad. What a heinous and cowardly act. COWARDLY.

These abandoned mines are both incredibly intriguing and also completely terrifying to me. The more photos I see of them the more my heart sinks thinking that LE might have good reason to be searching mines in and around JT. Within a two hour drive of Twentynine Palms I would estimate there to be well over 1000 abandoned mines, most with significant vertical mine shaft openings. A great deal of time and money has been spent on locating mines, documenting their location and stats, and prioritizing which mines need to be stabilized and sealed immediately. Still, there are thousands and thousands of mines that the Abandoned Mines Lands Unit (AMLU) weren't able to locate, that haven't been reported, or that they don't even know about in California alone. Scary and sobering thought.

I stumbled upon this last night and thought it was interesting...you can buy these mines outside of Joshua Tree and other areas on EBay. The Twentynine Palms "Italy Mine" that the Marines drove into and died in (that I posted about on the previous page of this thread) sold last year for just over two thousand dollars. Crazy.

http://m.ebay.com/itm/GOLD-PARK-MIN...-STRAIGHT-SALE-CALIFORNIA-CLAIM-/140931958540

And I completely agree. It takes a special kind of cowardly monster to perpetrate a crime such as this. Justice can not come swift or strong enough onto the person or persons responsible. Where are you, Erin?

ETA - maybe I'll just keep posting random mine facts onto this thread to keep it towards the top of the "missing" thread list. ;)

I wonder if they searched her other property??

Too bad Mrs. L's face isn't on that cover too.....

True... I was glad at least one of them was, though. I hope it stirs up something, somewhere that helps lead to finding Erin.

Must admit I was pretty happily surprised that this was the cover and not yet another Bachelorette "what happened in the Fantasy Suite?!?" story.

I wonder if they searched her other property??
The suspect(s) may have gained access to more of her property during their parasitic leaching.

I wonder if other search warrants have been obtained. The only thing I've found was from a not-so-reputable site that said yes. There are other warrants issued in SB County, but they are all sealed afaik.
