I know that Texas Equisearch, at least, requires LE to provide them with an area to search, rather than just come to town and blindly go at it. These groups have specialities, usually, in their methods and equipment. But I doubt they could simply be given an area as huge as the park where Erin claimed to be headed.
I have followed hundreds of cases and do not find the handling of Erin's especially extraordinary. Many LE agencies do not really know how to deal with missing persons, Imo, and remain far too secretive, worrying in advance about evidence rather than using resources, including the public, to find the person. Some LE agencies are stuck in the past, as far as police being "close-mouthed" and this one has the military involvement as well, making it more so. It is a shame that in many cases, LE eventually gives out more info, but months later, when memories have faded.
I think in Holly Bobo's case, more than a year, or two years, passed without LE addressing the public.
