I do not understand how a mother with 2 small children can go missing all those years ago and there is little info and nothing I could find in way of media or any family members looking for them. It's astonishing nobody seems to be looking for answers. The car is missing so that makes many think a body of water or a cliff but that is not always the case. LE should really reopen this case and find answers.

@Laughing I saw that too and thought how weird and at first thought it could be her since the unique name but the date of birth didn't match up. Then I saw this Fairy Elaine Olmstead Jr and saw she is a junior. After I could not find anything I felt frustrated so I wrote an email to the sheriff asking about the case. It's disheartening that there are 2 small children missing since 1992 and seems like nothing is being done. I have never reached out to LE before but it was a small effort in hopes someone will read it and at least look into it. I did search the Shasta County Sheriff's Department Facebook page and although they have listed missing people on it from time to time I could find none for this family and I mentioned that in my email. If by chance someone responds to my email I'll update here.

I agree that it's strange there's no coverage of this and also no info on where they were going.
I wonder if anyone can find some old news clippings from 1992?

Medical ConditionsFairy is a dependent adult.

What exactly does this mean?

  • #6
Dependent adult can mean a range of things, but likely a court (at some point) found Ms. Olmstead unable to care for herself & appointed a guardian to oversee her affairs.

Doubt we'll learn much more.

Is this family in NAMUS? Who is the LE contact?

Fellow posters, those who care to know more about what happened to Ms. Olmstead and her two children, ask here:

Shasta County Sheriff

No response to our lone fellow here, but if 100 people ask -- will the public pressure be ignored?

Frustrating lack of leads in this case. Did they runaway and start a new life? Did they have an accident, as @atombudd suggests?

What was Fairy's situation? Was there a boyfriend on the scene? What about the kids' father? Is there anyone who might want to cause them harm?

I notice that Fairy's youngest, Wesley, had a different surname (Oldbury). I take it the two children were not full siblings? I wonder if anything can be gleaned from that?

I think they got into an accident and the car is underwater somewhere would explain how their car hasn't been traced since.

That's a definite possibility. However, cars can be dumped, scrapped, or re-plated. We don't know the circumstances behind Fairy's disappearance, apart from the missing vehicle. An abductor could have easily used it and then disposed of the evidence.

You are right unless more information about her life and who last saw her pops up this case will remain a complete mystery. I wonder if any family members of hers is even raising awareness etc.

I joined a Shasta County Crime Watch FB group and shared their missing person flyer there hoping someone would comment. One woman commented that her parents are both deceased and her 2 sibling died as infants. I don't know if it's true but if so could have something to do with why no family is speaking out. Sad case. @Laughing I'm still waiting for a response too! Doubt we will get one.

Um, here at WS we don't sleuth family.

I wonder if anyone involved with the Shasta County Crime Watch FB Page has heard anything about the deaths of the siblings, or why Ms. Olmstead was a dependent adult, or rumors about the disappearance???

There is so little information. How can a family just vanish?
