“Fitzpatrick was hired to be Jin’s tour guide of the Morongo Basin area,” said Sheriff’s Department public information officer Gloria Huerta. “They were supposed to go camping, but the amount of time was not disclosed.”

Fitzpatrick was reported missing by a friend from the Morongo Basin area about 11:50 a.m. Sunday, July 30.

Fitzpatrick pleaded guilty in December 2020 to misdemeanor assault. He was accused of probation violations and was placed in the veterans treatment court, a program that offers alternatives to case proceedings that address underlying problems.

Court documents show he completed the program and a county judicial commissioner dismissed the charge in April of this year.

I agree. It’s the same guy, but he’s lost a lot of weight. There are two other pictures of him in some of the Chinese social media that Fang sent to her family.

They were in contact for 4 months before she arrived, I wonder if he lost weight in anticipation of meeting her, pure speculation on my part.

The photo being used on his missing poster looks like it’s from his driver’s license. It’s probably an old photo, he might have gained weight while he was going through his divorce and got himself back in shape once the stress was gone.

Agreed, but also I am a little bit confused on the timing of some of these photos. I know that these are from Chinese media, but wondering if there are any dates attached. Was any of them after the 7/22nd? And how does the media have access to these? Are they posted by Jin Fang?

After the police intervened in the investigation, a surveillance camera caught the man's truck in the Thermal area on July 22.

At the same time, the man's mobile phone activity was tracked on July 24 in the Julian area of San Diego County.

Based on court records it looks like he might have been married to a Chinese woman in the past. So he might speak some Chinese. I don’t think he was her tour guide and wonder why the sheriff’s office chose to position it as such to the media. It‘s more likely that this was an online “romance” type situation. Some men just really prefer women from Asian countries. And some women from outside the US find American men particularly attractive for various reasons.

This is a bizarre photo. If this was a property surveillance camera and it caught him standing there, what was he doing on this dirt road? Compared to the photo on the missing poster from his ID, he looks like a much younger version of himself. And where is Fang?

Agree, and I don't think his background indicates somebody inherently dangerous.

But even long-term couples may find themselves in conflict when travelling together 24/7, and these were, in reality, strangers.

I believe it’s a picture that Fang took of him and sent to her family during the first few days of her trip.
