According to an LASD release, deputies were dispatched to the 1800 block of East Avenue J-2 shortly before midnight on Saturday after a call came in alleging children were being harmed at the location.

“Upon arrival, deputies contacted a female adult and conducted a check of the location,” the LASD release said. “Deputies found four children under the age of ten suffering from lacerations to their bodies.”

A person of interest was detained; he was identified by police as Prospero Serna, who is the biological father of all of the victims, LASD said.

"The call stated children were being harmed at the location," a news release said. Upon arrival, the deputies contacted a woman, conducted a search and found four children in one bedroom "suffering from lacerations to their bodies," the sheriff's statement said.

The victims, all under the age of 10, were transported to a hospital, authorities said. Two of them were pronounced dead at the facility, and the other two were listed in stable condition with injuries that were not life-threatening.

"We don't know where exactly the attack occurred, but they were all found in one bedroom," said Lt. Daniel Vizcarra with the Sheriff's Department.

"It's extremely difficult," he added. "This is traumatizing for everybody who's involved. All the deputies who responded, all the parties involved, the investigators, everyone."

Officials said deputies responded to the residence in the 1800 block of East Avenue J-2 after receiving a 911 call from the children's mother just before midnight on Saturday, according to ABC 7 News.

Video of Serna being detained shows deputies – who used pepper spray and a stun gun to subdue the father of four – pinning him to the ground. Serna could be seen in the video with blood on his clothes.

The call, which was received at 11:50 p.m., stated that there was “child abuse in progress,” Vizcarra said. The children’s mother directed deputies to an apartment, where they found all four children in a bedroom with lacerations. Vizcarra said the mother did not have any visible injuries.

The Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services said in a statement Sunday that state law “prohibits confirming or commenting on whether a child or family has been involved with the department.” The department has faced intense scrutiny in recent years over its handling of a series of highly publicized deaths and injuries to children on its watch.

Oh my Lord! I will NEVER, EVER understand how a human being can hurt innocent children, let alone their own flesh and blood. It breaks my heart.
Do we know if the killer (I won't call him a father) was living with the family? I think the report said he was from San Bernadino County but I realize that just because someone's address is in one location they may be living elsewhere.
It's possible the mother had a restraining order against him. I'm rambling I know...............
It's just so heartbreaking. :(

I'm going with mental health issues playing a big role in this case. Not saying he was legally insane. But his FB tells me he is not a well person JMO

This post in particular indicates a history of mental health rebatement that he was not happy with.

I’ve not heard the term child abuse attack before when a death is involved. It’s alarming. There’s no mention of a weapon as when I read lacerations, I was thinking a knife was used but is it possible he beat his little children to death? I can’t imagine whether a knife or his fists were used - with the mother in the apartment, especially with no visible injuries?...

Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón announced today that Prospero Serna is charged with viciously attacking his three young children and murdering two of them in Lancaster.

“Two young lives were abruptly cut short in an astonishing act of brutality,” District Attorney Gascón said. “This is a profoundly heart-wrenching tragedy that has shaken our community to its core. Our hearts ache for the innocent lives lost and those who will have to live the rest of their lives reliving a nightmare.

The loss of these young souls is a stark reminder of the urgent need to protect the most vulnerable among us. I want to assure the community that we are committed to seeking justice for these children.”

Prospero Guadalupe Serna (dob 12/12/84) is charged in case MA086014 with two counts of murder; one count of attempted murder; two counts of assault of a child under eight years of age causing death; and one count of child abuse; including an alleged strike prior of having been convicted of a felony.

It is further alleged that Serna committed the multiple murder special circumstances, that he personally used a deadly weapon, and that he personally inflicted great bodily injury on a child.

Serna is scheduled to be arraigned today in Dept. A01 of the Michael D. Antonovich Courthouse, North District.

On October 28, Serna allegedly attacked three of his children, killing two of them, while he was in the residence with his four children and their mother.

When deputies arrived, they discovered that the two children had been beaten and stabbed to death. Two other children, one who was injured, were found hiding in the residence.

Deputies apprehended Serna a few blocks away.

Serna is expected to be held on no bail.

If convicted as charged, Serna will face a maximum sentence of life without the possibility of parole plus 25 years determinate in prison.

If you or someone you know is a victim of child abuse, please call 911.

The case was investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

This crime should surely earn a death penalty trial.

You would think. And maybe if there wasn't a current moritorium on the death penalty in CA it would earn one.

In one word (and I can't help saying it): METH.

Lancaster made the "list" of most miserable cities, and one of the variables was...meth use/busts.

Both Palmdale and Lancaster have tons of foreclosures, evictions, students absent from school, financial fraud, etc.

It is heartbreaking.

We can still sentence people to death and they go to death row - but yes, it's getting increasingly rare. It's so expensive (in any state) to actually get the death penalty applied. It's my understanding that California lacks a way of making people stay in prison for life, unless they are on death row (there are more than 700 such prisoners).

Politically, voters do not want it, either.

I don’t care which one, so long as they keep him there permanently: (chart media source: The Economist, data citation provided in graphic)
